If your PS5 shows “No Signal”, a black screen, flickering, or no sound, the cause is usually the TV input, HDMI cable, HDMI port, an intermediary device, or an incompatible video-output setting—not automatically a failed console. Follow the checks below in order; most are safe and require no tools or data reset.
First, identify the symptom

| Safe Mode also never appears | More likely a cable, display, HDMI input, or PS5 HDMI OUT hardware problem, after testing substitutions. |
| PS5 light is solid white with no picture | The console may be running, but the display is not accepting its video output. The light is only a clue, not a diagnosis. |
Do these five quick checks first
- Select the correct TV input. Press the remote’s Input, Source, or Home button and choose the HDMI input used by the PS5. If you are unsure, test each HDMI input.
- Check the ports. Connect PS5 HDMI OUT to a television HDMI IN. Do not use a USB port or another connector. PlayStation’s setup guidance confirms this connection (official instructions).
- Reseat the cable. Turn the devices off, remove both plugs, and insert them fully without forcing or aggressively wiggling the connector.
- Remove intermediary equipment. Connect PS5 → TV directly. Temporarily bypass a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, capture card, wall coupler, extension, or video processor.
- Try another HDMI input. A different TV port can separate a faulty input from a console or cable fault.
If direct connection works, reconnect your receiver or soundbar one device at a time. The device that reintroduces the failure is the likely bottleneck.
Test the HDMI cable properly
Use the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 if you have it. For 4K/120 Hz, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable; see PlayStation’s 4K and HDMI guidance and the HDMI Licensing certification information. Inspect the plugs for bent parts, looseness, or damage.
A cable can work at 1080p yet fail at 4K/120 Hz, HDR, or VRR. Conversely, a TV detecting that “something” is connected does not prove the complete video signal is stable. Test a second known-good cable, ideally with the same PS5 and TV.

Use controlled tests to isolate the failing component

Also test the original TV with another HDMI device. This is more informative than repeatedly unplugging the same cable.
Power-cycle the TV and PS5
- Shut down the PS5 completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Turn off the TV.
- Unplug both devices for about 60 seconds. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed official requirement.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable directly between PS5 HDMI OUT and TV HDMI IN.
- Plug both devices back in, turn on the TV, select its HDMI input, then start the PS5.
This can clear a temporary HDMI handshake state.
Reset PS5 video output in Safe Mode
Safe Mode is the key recovery step when normal startup is blank or the TV reports an unsupported resolution.

- Hold the PS5 power button for three seconds to turn it off. Wait until the indicator stops flashing.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep—roughly seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the controller’s PS button. A charging-only cable may not work.
In Safe Mode, choose Change Video Output, then try Change Resolution first. Start with 1080p or Automatic. If the problem occurs only through a receiver, soundbar, or older display, try Change HDCP Mode. PlayStation lists these options in its Safe Mode guide.

Do not jump to database rebuilding or destructive options for a basic HDMI fault. Restore Default Settings is different from deleting user data; PlayStation says it does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data, but use it only after simpler steps. If Safe Mode will not display, verify full shutdown, try another cable and HDMI input, connect directly to the TV, and test another display. Fix 4K, 120 Hz, HDR, VRR, and HDCP mismatches
These are separate compatibility layers:
- Resolution: 1080p, 1440p, or 2160p/4K.
- Refresh rate: usually 60 Hz or 120 Hz.
- HDR: high dynamic range.
- VRR: variable refresh rate.
- HDCP: copy-protection negotiation between devices.
Once the picture returns, normal controls are under Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output. Update the TV firmware, then re-enable 4K, HDR, VRR, and 120 Hz one at a time. If the picture disappears after enabling one feature, return to Safe Mode and lower the output again.
The entire chain must support a high-bandwidth signal: PS5, cable, TV input, TV firmware and HDMI signal mode, plus any receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter. Some televisions require a setting named Enhanced Format, HDMI Signal Format, Input Signal Plus, Deep Color, UHD Color, or similar. Menu names and supported formats vary by model, region, and firmware; consult the TV manual. Sony notes these differences in its TV HDMI guidance.

HDMI 2.1 is needed for specific features such as 4K/120 Hz, not for ordinary 1080p or 4K/60 Hz use. A PS5 does not require a 4K television. An older receiver may pass 4K but not 4K/120 Hz, VRR, or the required HDCP mode. PlayStation’s resolution guide covers the complete-chain requirements.

If the picture works but sound does not
- Check the TV volume and mute status.
- Disconnect the soundbar or receiver temporarily and test TV speakers.
- On the PS5, open Settings → Sound → Audio Output and select the TV while diagnosing.
- Reconnect audio equipment after direct picture and sound work.
PlayStation places these controls under Settings → Sound → Audio Output.

Could the PS5 HDMI port be damaged?
Suspect physical damage only after substitution tests. Warning signs include a plug that feels unusually loose, a visibly bent, pushed-in, cracked, or missing-contact port, failures with several known-good cables and displays, or a fault that began after the console or cable was pulled, dropped, or struck. An intact-looking port can still have an electrical fault.
Do not poke inside the port, bend contacts with metal tools, or open the console unless you are qualified and accept warranty and further-damage risks.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
Use the official PlayStation support and repair diagnostic path when no image appears on multiple known-good displays and cables, Safe Mode remains unavailable, the HDMI OUT port is damaged, or the console suffered impact, liquid, or electrical damage. Check warranty or retailer protection before using an independent repair shop; availability and terms vary by country and model.

TV says “No Signal”?
├─ No: picture but no sound → follow the audio steps.
└─ Yes
├─ Correct HDMI input? No → select the PS5’s input.
├─ Direct PS5-to-TV connection? No → bypass receiver/soundbar/switch.
├─ Different cable tested? No → try the included/Ultra High Speed cable.
├─ Different TV HDMI input? No → test another port.
├─ Safe Mode visible? Yes → Change Video Output.
└─ Still no image on another display? → contact PlayStation Repairs.The Bottom Line
Start with the input, cable, direct connection, and another HDMI port. If those fail, use Safe Mode’s Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode, then test another display. Only after the PS5 fails across known-good cables and screens should you treat the HDMI OUT port or console hardware as the likely fault.
