First, test PS button > Power > Enter Rest Mode. If the indicator turns orange and the screen goes dark, Rest Mode works and the likely problem is an inactivity timer or an open game/media app. If the command fails, follow the repair sequence below instead. No generic tutorial can guarantee a fix for hardware, power, storage, or corrupted-system faults.

Confirm what Rest Mode should look like
PS5 has three power states: on, Rest Mode, and off. In a normal transition, the display blanks, the indicator changes to orange, and the controller turns off. Charging, downloads, updates, or Remote Play may continue if those Rest Mode features are enabled, so an internet connection or a charging light does not prove that the console is still fully on. 1. Fix automatic Rest Mode
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
- Review During Media Playback and While Playing Games.
- Select a time period instead of Don’t Put in Rest Mode if you want automatic sleep.
- Close the game or media app, return to the Home screen, and test again.
An active application, especially video playback, can prevent automatic entry. Setting Don’t Put in Rest Mode intentionally leaves the console on and uses more power.

2. If manual Rest Mode fails
Restart safely
Press the PS button, choose Power > Restart PS5, and test Enter Rest Mode again. Do not remove the AC cable while the indicator is lit or blinking; Sony warns this can cause data loss, corruption, or damage. Disconnect power only after a normal shutdown and an unlit indicator.

Update system software
Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Install any available update, then retest. If a download is stuck, open PS button > Downloads/Uploads, highlight the update, select View Error Info > Try Again. Repeated failures can be handled with Sony’s normal or USB update instructions; do not assume a fixed firmware number because versions change.
3. Isolate Rest Mode features and accessories
Temporarily open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn off Supply Power to USB Ports and Stay Connected to the Internet. These options support charging, downloads, updates, and Remote Play but increase standby consumption. If Rest Mode becomes reliable, re-enable them one at a time to identify the trigger.
Test connected hardware
- Fully turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external storage, headsets, charging cables, and capture equipment.
- Test with only the display and power cable attached.
- Reconnect devices individually.
If the console wakes immediately, also test Settings > System > HDMI > Enable HDMI Device Link set to off. HDMI-CEC, USB, and accessory interactions are community-reported possibilities, not universal Sony-confirmed causes; see the reported HDMI/USB troubleshooting discussion.

4. Use Safe Mode when normal steps do not work
- Hold the power button for about three seconds to turn the PS5 off; wait for the indicator to go out.
- Hold the power button again and release after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press its PS button.
Use Sony’s Safe Mode guide and choose the least destructive option first:
- Repair Console Storage (option 3): intended for startup or storage problems; Sony says it does not erase data.
- Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache: a non-destructive system-feature troubleshooting step.
- Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database: scans content and creates a new database. It is not a factory reset, but back up important saves before extensive troubleshooting.
- Update System Software (option 4): useful when normal updating fails.
Reset PS5 (option 7) deletes user data. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software, option 8) deletes all user data and removes/reinstalls the system software. Use either only after backup and only as a last-resort software step.

The PS5 enters Rest Mode but the controller will not charge
Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports and select Always, 3 Hours, or another available setting. Adaptive charging is limited to supported CFI-2000 model-group consoles according to Sony’s charging support page.

It wakes immediately
Repeat the isolation test with HDMI Device Link off, accessories disconnected, a different controller, and Stay Connected to the Internet disabled. Remote Play also requires the relevant Rest Mode network settings; see Sony’s Remote Play requirements.
The screen is black, or the light flashes white
A black screen can be an HDMI/display fault rather than Rest Mode. Safe Mode’s Change Video Output options can help with blank-screen problems. Orange is the expected completed Rest Mode state; persistent white or flashing behavior should be checked against Sony’s indicator-light guide. Do not unplug while the light is lit or blinking.
The console shuts down or crashes
That is not a normal Rest Mode transition. Update software, test without accessories, use the non-destructive Safe Mode options, and stop relying on Rest Mode until the cause is identified.
When to stop troubleshooting
Use PlayStation Repairs if Rest Mode still fails after updating, accessory isolation, restart, and non-destructive Safe Mode work. Escalate immediately for repeated shutdowns, inability to start Safe Mode, persistent flashing indicators, unusual heat, burning smell, or unstable power. These symptoms can indicate a hardware, storage, thermal, or power problem that settings cannot repair.
