PS5 Performance Mode vs. Quality Mode: Which Should You Use for an Action RPG?

Performance mode is a good starting point when smooth combat motion matters most; Quality may suit players who prefer visual detail. Game targets and display requirements vary.

For most action RPGs on PS5, start with Performance Mode if you care most about responsive-feeling movement, dodging, parrying, and camera motion. Choose Quality Mode if you prefer richer image quality and are comfortable with a lower frame-rate target. The trade-off—and the available options—depend on the individual game, so check what its menu actually promises.

What Performance and Quality modes change

PlayStation describes Performance Mode as a way to make motion smoother, while Resolution Mode prioritizes higher graphic quality. These are broad preset goals, not standardized specifications: a mode’s frame rate, resolution, and image-quality trade-offs vary by game. The presets apply only to games that offer them. PlayStation Support explains the console’s game preset options.

In an action RPG, smoother motion may make fast camera turns and combat animations easier to follow. That can be valuable when timing a dodge or parry, but it does not guarantee a particular response time or make every player perform better. Quality mode may suit you better if visual detail matters more than motion smoothness.

How the options compare in three PS5 games

Official game pages show why the mode name alone is not enough to predict a game’s settings. These are the published PS5 figures; they should not be read as one universal PS5 specification.

The figures are not directly interchangeable: Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered explicitly calls its frame rates targets, while the examples come from different games with different implementations. PlayStation also lists separate, higher targets for Wuchang on PS5 Pro; those figures are not the PS5 targets shown above.

Which mode should you use for an action RPG?

Pick Performance for movement and combat readability

Start here if your priority is smooth-looking movement during fights, quick camera turns, or keeping enemy animations easy to track. Try it during the kind of combat you play most—especially if you rely on dodges, parries, or precise positioning—and decide whether the motion feels better on your screen.

Pick Quality for image detail

Choose Quality, Resolution, or Graphics mode if you value the game’s visual presentation more and its lower frame-rate target feels acceptable. The exact visual benefit is game-specific; the label alone does not establish that a mode uses native 4K.

Try Balanced when the game offers it

A middle option may trade some smoothness for image quality, but its target and requirements differ by title. In Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, for example, Balanced is listed at 40 FPS on PS5 and requires a 120Hz-compatible display. That does not make a 120Hz screen a general requirement for Performance Mode.

Do you need a 120Hz TV or monitor?

Not for the basic choice between Performance and Quality. A higher-refresh-rate display matters only when a particular game or video-output feature requires it. Wuchang’s listing attaches a 120Hz-compatible-display requirement to Balanced mode; PlayStation’s guidance says 120Hz output requires both a supporting game and a compatible display. VRR likewise depends on support from the game and TV. PlayStation’s 4K, 120Hz, and VRR guidance describes those display-feature conditions.

PS5’s resolution setting can be left on Automatic, which selects the highest resolution supported by the connected TV. Console video-output settings do not replace a game’s own graphics-mode choices: the game must implement and offer the mode.

How to make the choice in your game

  1. Open the game’s own graphics or display menu. Look for Performance, Quality, Resolution, Graphics, or Balanced; names differ across titles.
  2. Read the mode description and any display requirement. Check the stated frame-rate or resolution target, and note whether the game calls it a target rather than a guarantee.
  3. Begin with Performance if combat motion is your priority. Play a representative encounter and judge movement and camera motion on your setup.
  4. Switch to Quality if you prefer its presentation. If a Balanced option is available, check its specific requirements before selecting it.

These choices are preferences, not a universal technical verdict: the official examples establish different mode targets, but they do not prove that one preset is best for every player or action RPG.
