The PS5 Pro’s energy-efficiency surprise is not that it consistently uses less electricity than a standard PS5. It is that, in some game-specific tests, it delivers better graphics or frame-rate performance for a modest increase in power draw. Sony’s published gaming averages for newer PS5 and PS5 Pro models are also close, but they were measured on different dates with different games, so they do not prove that one console is universally more efficient.

What the Elden Ring comparison measured

Independent testing reported by AllTechNerd put the PS5 Pro at approximately 228–230 W in Elden Ring Quality Mode, compared with approximately 215–218 W for a standard PS5 under comparable gaming conditions. Those reported ranges imply roughly 5.5% more power draw for the Pro in that comparison—not lower consumption.

The same coverage reported a 30–35% performance uplift for the Pro in that mode. Treat that as a result for the cited game and test, not a promise that every title will run 30–35% faster. The figures are reported game-testing measurements; they are not Sony’s rated maximum power, nor a universal average for all PS5 Pro games. The coverage does not establish every measurement detail a reader would need to reproduce the test, such as a full scene-by-scene protocol or accessory load.

How Sony’s official gaming figures compare

Sony’s ecodesign page lists active-gaming power measurements for the PS5 Pro model CFI-7021 and the standard PS5 CFI-2016. The Pro’s three-game average was tested on May 2, 2026; the standard model’s figures were tested on January 31, 2025. Sony used different game samples, so these are useful published reference points, not a controlled head-to-head test.

PS5 Pro, Sony safety guide Maximum rated power, not typical gaming draw 390 W

Sony’s active-gaming values are averages based on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Demon’s Souls and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 for the Pro. They put the tested models in a similar power range, but the different test dates, games and model groups prevent a firm conclusion that the Pro uses less power than the standard PS5. See Sony’s ecodesign data for the listed measurements.

The 390 W figure in the PS5 Pro safety guide is a maximum rated-power specification, not a typical reading during play. It should not be used as an estimate of ordinary gaming consumption.

What “performance per watt” means for a console

Performance per watt is useful gaming output divided by the power consumed. “Output” is not just a frame-rate number: it can include smoother or more stable frame rates, higher image quality, improved ray tracing, or a better balance between visual quality and responsiveness.

The Pro’s case is strongest when its extra hardware produces a visible improvement without a proportionate rise in whole-console draw. In the reported Elden Ring comparison, the roughly 5.5% higher draw was paired with a much larger reported performance uplift. That makes improved performance per watt plausible for that test, but it is not a measured, standardized efficiency score for the console as a whole or for every game.

Sony describes the PS5 Pro as having an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), alongside support for high frame rates in compatible games. PSSR reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render; it may help a game reach a favorable image-quality and performance balance, but the available power figures do not isolate PSSR’s effect on wall draw. The PS5 Pro product page also makes clear that features and enhancements depend on title support.

A console’s total power draw is not just its graphics hardware. It includes the processor, memory, SSD, cooling, power-supply losses and other active systems; networking, USB loads and disc activity can also affect a particular measurement. Game scenes and modes matter too: combat, menus and loading can draw differently, while a frame-rate cap can change the work the console is doing. A fair comparison needs the same game, scene, patch, mode, display conditions and measurement method.

Gaming power and rest-mode power are different

Sony’s ecodesign listing for the PS5 Pro CFI-7021, tested May 2, 2026, reports 43.6 W in the home-menu interface under HD conditions and 44.6 W under UHD conditions. It lists 0.3 W in basic rest mode, 3.4 W while supplying power to USB ports, 1.0 W while staying connected to the internet, and 3.6 W for the listed “Rest (All)” configuration. These are separate operating states; rest-mode draw depends on which functions are enabled.

  • USB power delivery can raise draw compared with basic rest mode.
  • Internet connectivity and features such as downloads or remote wake can also change standby consumption.
  • Use the console’s rest-mode settings to disable functions you do not need; a feature-rich rest configuration is not equivalent to minimal standby.

Controller charging is another separate load. Sony’s 2025 sustainability report says adaptive charging on the slimmer PS5 and PS5 Pro can reduce controller-charging power from approximately 2.6–3.1 W to 0.3–1 W after charging is complete, with a reduction of up to 80% in that mode. This is a charging-power figure, not a claim that the console’s active gaming draw falls by the same amount. See Sony’s Sustainability Report 2025.

Energy in kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000

Using 230 W as an illustrative gaming draw based on the independent Elden Ring result:

  • 2 hours of play: 0.46 kWh.
  • 10 hours of play: 2.3 kWh.
  • 500 hours of play: 115 kWh.

Multiply the resulting kWh by your local electricity rate to estimate the cost. These examples cover gaming at the illustrative draw only; they do not include rest-mode use, other devices, or differences in game workload. Rates vary by location and over time, so there is no single annual cost that applies to every owner.

Is the PS5 Pro a good choice for an energy-conscious buyer?

Not if the main goal is to reduce the electricity bill. The available comparisons do not establish that the Pro consistently draws less power than a standard PS5. Its energy argument is about potentially getting more visual or frame-rate performance from a similar amount of power, particularly in supported games—not about guaranteed electricity savings.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Existing PS5 owner: Consider the Pro for supported games if you value sharper image reconstruction, ray tracing or steadier high frame rates, especially with a compatible 4K or high-refresh display. Energy savings alone are not a reason to upgrade.
  • New buyer: Treat the Pro as a graphics and performance upgrade. Compare its purchase premium with the value you place on those improvements; the electricity figures do not make it a cost-saving alternative.
  • Disc user: The Pro is all-digital and requires a separately purchased compatible disc drive for physical games and discs. Check the official product listing before comparing the effective cost of your options.
  • Player weighing a gaming PC: There is no defensible blanket claim that the Pro is more efficient. A fair comparison must match the game, resolution, upscaling, frame-rate target, ray tracing, image settings and wall-power measurement; a PC measurement may also include a monitor, which should not be compared with console-only draw.

Enhancements are title-specific, so check Sony’s PS5 Pro feature information and the games you actually play rather than assuming every PS5 title uses the hardware in the same way.

Verdict: efficient in output, not a low-power console

The PS5 Pro’s efficiency claim is defensible when it means more gaming performance or image quality for a relatively small increase in power in a particular test. It is not evidence that the Pro uses less electricity across the board. Sony’s published averages show similar active-gaming draw for the listed Pro and standard PS5 models, but their different dates and game samples rule out a direct head-to-head efficiency verdict. Buy the Pro for the supported games and visual improvements you value—not to lower your power bill.
