PS5 Pro Ray Tracing: Is Sony’s “3x Faster” Claim True?

Sony’s PS5 Pro can cast ray-tracing rays at up to triple the speed in some circumstances, according to Sony—but that does not mean triple the frame rate or better effects in every game.

Yes—with an important qualification. Sony says the PS5 Pro can cast ray-tracing rays at double, and sometimes triple, the speed of the standard PS5. That is a claim about ray-tracing throughput in some circumstances, not a promise that every game will look three times better or run at three times the frame rate. The PS5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024, so the useful question now is how that claim translates into supported games.

What Sony actually claimed

Sony’s September 2024 reveal said the PS5 Pro’s ray tracing would run at “more than double” the speed of the current PS5. In its launch announcement, Sony refined that wording: the console can cast rays at “double, and at times triple, the speeds” of the standard PS5. Those are Sony’s descriptions of a hardware capability, not a universal benchmark showing every ray-tracing effect in every game running three times faster.

Sony also gave separate figures for other parts of the graphics upgrade. The Pro has 67% more GPU compute units, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering performance of up to 45% faster than the standard PS5. The 45% figure concerns broader rendering performance; it is not another way of saying ray tracing is 3x faster. Sony’s reveal announcement and launch announcement describe the figures separately.

What ray tracing changes in a game

Ray tracing simulates how light travels and interacts with a scene. Depending on how a developer uses it, that can improve reflections, shadows, global illumination, and refraction. These effects can make a game’s lighting feel more convincing, but they are computationally expensive. On the standard PS5, developers may have to limit the effects, image resolution, or frame rate to stay within the console’s performance budget.

PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

More ray-tracing capacity gives developers additional options: they might add or improve an effect, render more rays, or reduce the performance cost of effects already in the game. It does not decide which option a game will use. That is a game-by-game design choice.

Why 3x ray-tracing throughput does not mean 3x the frame rate

A game’s frame rate depends on more than ray tracing. CPU work, conventional GPU rendering, resolution, memory bandwidth, upscaling, engine design, and the selected graphics mode all affect how quickly frames are produced. If a game is limited by its CPU or by work unrelated to ray tracing, extra ray-tracing capacity may have little effect on its frame rate.

When a game is limited by its GPU or ray-tracing workload, a developer can spend the additional headroom in different ways: on higher frame rates, more detailed lighting, higher internal resolution, or a balance among them. A mode might improve image quality while keeping a similar frame rate, or target a higher frame rate with compromises elsewhere. Sony’s product information says performance varies by compatible title; its claim is not that every PS5 Pro game gets a triple-speed mode. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page describes features as applying to compatible games.

How PSSR fits into the upgrade

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning image-upscaling technology. It reconstructs a sharper output image from a lower-resolution input, which can help a game balance image quality and performance when the console is also doing demanding graphics work. The Pro’s visual gains therefore come from the combination of GPU capacity, faster memory, ray-tracing capability, and image reconstruction—not ray tracing in isolation.

PSSR is not native 4K rendering, and the result depends on the game and scene. Fine detail, motion, foliage, and particles can all affect how reconstruction looks. Sony announced an upgraded PSSR version in February 2026, saying it would roll out to PS5 Pro players, debut in Resident Evil Requiem, and had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at the time of the announcement. That update is distinct from the original “double, and at times triple” ray-casting claim. Sony’s PSSR update announcement has the details.

Which games can show the difference?

The strongest case is a game with a PS5 Pro-specific enhancement that uses the extra hardware for effects or modes that matter to you. Sony has promoted Pro enhancements for games including Alan Wake 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Sony developer coverage also discusses technology use in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Stellar Blade. These are examples of supported games, not evidence that each uses ray tracing in the same way or achieves the same performance increase. Sony’s launch announcement lists promoted titles, and developer comments explain some implementation choices.

Support also comes in different forms. Sony’s current PS5 Pro page lists more than 100 enhanced PS5 titles, while Game Boost can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. Those are separate categories: a PS5 Pro Enhanced title has Pro-specific support, whereas Game Boost is a broader feature for compatible games and does not mean every PS4 game receives a new ray-tracing mode. Sony’s feature page provides current catalog messaging.

A December 2024 technical seminar provided further explanation of the Pro’s architecture, ray tracing, and PSSR hardware. It is useful context for understanding that the ray-tracing claim concerns a specific capability, not a threefold increase in all graphics processing. It does not turn Sony’s peak wording into a universal game benchmark. The seminar coverage outlines the technical discussion.

Does the PS5 Pro make sense to buy for ray tracing?

Ray tracing alone is too narrow a reason to pay for the Pro. The upgrade is more compelling if you regularly play enhanced games, notice the trade-offs between quality and performance modes, and have a display that can reveal the improvement. A 4K screen—especially one with VRR and a 120Hz refresh rate—makes it easier to appreciate higher image quality or smoother modes. A 1080p display does not make the Pro’s benefits vanish, but it can make the visual difference less apparent.

  • More likely to suit you: You are buying your first PS5, want the highest image quality PlayStation offers, and play several Pro-enhanced titles on a capable 4K display.
  • Less compelling: You already own a recent PS5, are satisfied with its current modes, mostly play games without Pro enhancements, or do not care about ray-traced lighting.
  • Think about the full cost: In the United States, Sony’s recommended PS5 Pro price became $899.99 on April 2, 2026. The console has a 2TB SSD and is digital-only; a disc drive is sold separately. Physical-game owners should include that extra purchase in their decision. Prices and availability vary by region. Sony’s U.S. price update and official product listing give the relevant details.

If you are choosing between consoles, a standard PS5 remains the lower-cost way to play the PS5 library; the Pro’s case is its extra graphics headroom and supported modes, not access to a separate game generation. If you already have a PS5 and your favorite games are not enhanced—or you would need to replace it at a substantial loss—keeping it or waiting for a discount is a sensible choice.
