The PS5 Pro’s specifications are officially confirmed: it is a graphics-focused upgrade to the PS5, with a 16.7-TFLOPS GPU, Sony’s PSSR upscaling, faster ray tracing and a 2TB SSD. Its CPU remains an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 design, so the Pro is not a new CPU generation and its gains vary by game. The console launched on November 7, 2024; its current U.S. recommended retail price is $899.99, effective April 2, 2026.
PS5 Pro specifications at a glance

The comparison draws on Sony’s base PS5 guide, PS5 Pro guide and Sony’s performance comparison.
The CPU is not a new-generation upgrade
The official guide lists a custom Zen 2 CPU with eight cores and 16 threads, the same broad configuration as the PS5 family. That matters because a game limited by CPU work—rather than graphics rendering—may not gain as much as a GPU-heavy game. The Pro’s strongest case is improved graphics, ray tracing and image reconstruction, not a promise to remove every frame-rate bottleneck.
What 16.7 TFLOPS does—and does not—tell you
TFLOPS describes theoretical floating-point compute throughput. It helps identify that the Pro’s graphics engine is more capable on paper than the base PS5’s, but it is not a universal measure of how fast a game will run. Engines use hardware differently, and actual results depend on whether a title is GPU- or CPU-limited, its settings, developer optimization and any Pro-specific patch. It would be misleading to turn the TFLOPS figure into a fixed percentage improvement or infer a PC graphics-card equivalent from it alone.
PSSR is upscaling, not a guarantee of native 4K
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, is Sony’s AI-assisted image-reconstruction technology. It processes a game’s internally rendered image to produce a sharper output image, helping developers pursue higher visual quality or frame rates without rendering every pixel at the display resolution from the start.
- Internal resolution is the resolution at which the game initially renders.
- Output resolution is the signal sent to the television.
- Reconstruction is the processing used to create the final image from the render.
So a game outputting a 4K signal with PSSR is not necessarily rendering natively at 4K. Results depend on the game’s implementation, internal resolution, system software and scene; fine detail or motion can expose reconstruction artifacts such as shimmer or ghosting. Sony describes PSSR and enhanced features as available in supported games, not universally. See the official PS5 Pro features page.
Ray tracing and Sony’s 45% rendering claim
Sony says the Pro can cast rays at roughly twice the speed of the current PS5, and in some cases three times as fast. This gives developers more scope for effects such as reflections, shadows, global illumination and refraction, or for using ray tracing with fewer compromises. It does not mean every game automatically gains new effects: the developer must implement them.
Likewise, Sony’s “up to 45% faster rendering” figure is a company performance claim, not a guaranteed frame-rate increase. Some supported games may use the added graphics headroom to combine higher image quality with a smoother target; others may prioritize resolution, effects or a different balance. Whether a title reaches 60fps or 120fps depends on its design and implementation.
Memory: 16GB GDDR6 plus a separate 2GB DDR5 chip
The Pro should not be described simply as having an 18GB graphics-memory pool. Sony’s teardown identifies eight GDDR6 chips for high-speed graphics work and a ninth, slower DDR5 chip for processing tasks. The 2GB DDR5 allocation can leave more of the high-speed GDDR6 pool available for graphics, but it is not equivalent to adding 2GB of VRAM to a PC graphics card. Sony explains the design in its PS5 Pro teardown.
Will Wi-Fi 7 improve online gaming?
The Pro supports Wi-Fi 7 as well as Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5. A Wi-Fi 7 router and favorable local network conditions can offer greater wireless capacity, throughput or stability, but the console cannot guarantee lower ping. Latency also depends on the internet connection, router placement, interference and the game server. Gigabit Ethernet is an alternative when a wired connection is practical.
Does every PS5 game benefit?
No. Sony says enhancements are available in select PS5 games and vary by title. Look for the PS5 Pro Enhanced label and check the individual game’s feature description rather than assuming a particular resolution or frame rate.

These have explicit developer support. Depending on the game, that can mean higher resolution, improved ray tracing, better image quality or higher frame rates.
Game Boost
Sony says Game Boost can improve performance or image quality in some PS4 and PS5 games without each one receiving a full bespoke Pro enhancement. The result is title-dependent.

2TB SSD and expansion
The built-in custom SSD is 2TB, but the space available for games is lower because the system reserves storage. The console also has an M.2 expansion connector for compatible NVMe SSDs. Check Sony’s current drive requirements—including capacity, read speed, physical size and heatsink fit—before buying or installing an expansion drive; the official guide cautions users to review specifications.
Optional disc drive
The PS5 Pro ships without an optical drive. Owners of disc games or people who want 4K Blu-ray playback need Sony’s compatible detachable PS5 Disc Drive, sold separately. Pairing it with the console requires an internet connection during setup. Sony’s setup instructions and compatibility guide cover the process and supported model groups. The supplied information does not establish a reliable current U.S. drive price, so check Sony’s store for the live amount.
Vertical placement
Horizontal feet are included. A vertical stand is optional and listed as compatible with the Pro on Sony’s compatibility page; it is not necessary if the console will sit horizontally. The standard DualSense controller is included, not a separate “Pro” controller.

A good 4K television is the most relevant match for the Pro’s image-quality features. A 120Hz-capable screen is useful for games that support higher refresh rates, while 4K/120Hz, VRR and other advanced modes require compatible display equipment and connections. The console cannot add HDR quality, resolution or refresh-rate capability that the screen lacks.
Sony describes support for up to 8K in select games, not universal 8K gaming. Its compatibility page also distinguishes game support from system and media output, which can reach up to 4K.
Current U.S. price and who should consider the Pro
Sony’s current U.S. recommended retail price is $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. That is higher than the original $699.99 U.S. launch price, so launch-era value comparisons are outdated. Check Sony’s price-change announcement for the current U.S. figure. Disc buyers must also account for the separately sold drive; its current price was not reliably stated in the cited official pages. Prices and availability can differ outside the United States.
Quick Recap
The Pro is most compelling for
- Players with a high-quality 4K display, especially one capable of 120Hz or VRR.
- People who want better image quality or ray tracing without giving up as much performance as a quality-focused mode may require.
- Players whose favorite demanding games have substantial PS5 Pro enhancements.
- Buyers who value 2TB of internal storage and are willing to pay a premium for graphics features.
A regular PS5 may be the better fit for
- People using a 1080p screen or already satisfied with their PS5’s performance modes.
- Players whose favorite titles are CPU-limited or lack meaningful Pro enhancements.
- Disc collectors who consider a separately purchased drive an unwelcome extra.
- Buyers for whom the current $899.99 U.S. MSRP outweighs the visual improvements.
- Anyone expecting a new CPU architecture or a new console generation rather than a premium graphics upgrade.
What the specifications cannot promise
- 16.7 TFLOPS does not mean a fixed 67% improvement in every game. Workload, CPU limits, engine and settings matter.
- 18GB is not one graphics-memory pool. The 16GB GDDR6 and 2GB DDR5 serve different roles.
- PSSR does not mean native 4K. It reconstructs an image in supported implementations.
- Ray tracing is not always three times faster. Sony says roughly double and, in some cases, triple the ray-casting speed.
- Wi-Fi 7 does not guarantee lower ping. Network conditions and server distance still matter.
- 8K and high frame rates are not universal modes. Game and display support determine what is available.
