Choose the PS5 Slim Disc Edition if you own or plan to buy physical PS5 or supported PS4 games, or want to play movie discs. Choose the Digital Edition if downloads suit you and you do not need a disc drive—especially when it costs less locally. There is no universal savings winner: compare current prices where you live and the games you actually intend to buy.
What’s different between the PS5 Slim Disc and Digital Editions?
The main difference is the disc drive. Sony describes the Digital Edition as “an all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” The Disc Edition includes a drive, plays PS5 and supported PS4 game discs, and also plays downloaded digital games. The Digital Edition plays downloaded games; compatible slim models can be fitted with a separately sold drive later.

The capacities above are specific to Sony’s US listings and CFI-21XX documentation; they are not a guarantee that every regional model or revision has the same storage. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists the same core hardware platform—including an eight-core/16-thread custom AMD Zen 2 CPU and 16GB GDDR6 memory—for these configurations. Who should buy the Disc Edition?
Buy physical games or already own them
The Disc Edition is the straightforward choice if you have PS5 or supported PS4 game discs you want to keep playing. It also lets you consider borrowed or used physical copies, rather than limiting purchases to downloads. Whether a disc is cheaper depends on its current price and where you shop; compare the specific games you plan to play instead of assuming physical always costs less.

Watch movies on disc
Sony’s detachable-drive manual lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. If you want those formats without buying an add-on, choose the Disc Edition. The supported formats are listed in Sony’s Disc Drive instruction manual.
Who should buy the Digital Edition?
Choose Digital if you are comfortable downloading every game and do not need game or movie discs. It avoids paying for a drive you will not use, and it may be the better-value console when its current local price is lower. The US listing reports 825GB of storage for this edition versus 1TB for the Disc Edition; check the exact model sold in your market before deciding whether that difference matters to you.

If you might want disc access later, compare the Digital Edition’s price plus the compatible detachable drive against the Disc Edition’s price. Sony says the drive is sold separately, supports specified CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups, and requires an internet connection for initial pairing. Verify your console’s model number and the drive’s compatibility before purchase using Sony’s product comparison.
How to compare the real cost
- Check the current Disc and Digital Edition prices from retailers in your country. Do not rely on old launch prices or a temporary sale as the normal price gap.
- If considering Digital but wanting discs, add the price of Sony’s compatible detachable drive to the console price.
- Compare prices for the particular games you expect to buy, including the channels you actually use. Physical games can offer options such as used or borrowed copies, but no format guarantees a lower price.
- Include any movie-disc use and the listed storage for the exact regional model in your decision.
Sony’s official product pages and manuals specify features, capacities, and compatibility; they do not establish a lifetime-cost saving for either edition. Your likely purchases and local prices determine the value.

Does Sony’s January 2028 notice change the choice?
Sony’s US PS5 comparison says that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be offered for purchase in digital format only, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is a notice on Sony’s US page; check your local PlayStation page for whether the policy applies in your region. For a buyer weighing a drive mainly to access new releases, that announced change is relevant, but it does not remove the Disc Edition’s use for supported older game discs or movie discs.
