The PS5 Slim is smaller and lighter than the early original PS5, and the cited Slim disc model has a larger built-in SSD. It is not a higher gaming-performance tier: Sony lists the same broad CPU, GPU, and memory class for both. Sony’s official material cited here does not establish that either version is generally cooler or quieter.
The figures below compare the CFI-21xx Slim disc model with the early CFI-1115A original disc model. Other revisions can differ, so check the CFI model number and disc-drive configuration when comparing consoles.
How much smaller is the PS5 Slim?
Sony says the redesign is more than 30% smaller by volume. In the specific disc-model comparison below, the Slim is narrower, shorter, and shallower, and weighs about 1.1 kg less. These are measurements for the named models, not universal dimensions for every PS5 revision.

Dimensions and weights are approximate and come from Sony’s CFI-21xx instruction manual and CFI-1115A safety guide. Sony’s current PS5 overview describes the redesign as more than 30% smaller by volume. Measure your shelf or cabinet with room for cables and airflow; the console’s listed dimensions do not include projecting parts.

Does the PS5 Slim run hotter or quieter?
There is no supported general winner in the cited official material. Sony’s support guidance says the cooling fan may become louder than usual during some games and apps when it temporarily speeds up to cool the system. That explains a possible noise change under load, but does not compare Slim and original models in a controlled temperature or acoustic test.
Sony’s account of the original PS5’s design describes its cooling fan and airflow, but design details for that model do not show that it runs cooler than the Slim. Noise can vary with workload, placement, dust, and the individual console.

Keep either console’s airflow clear
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around the console.
- Keep vents unobstructed; avoid cramped placement and long-fiber carpet.
- Remove dust from the vents.
These are Sony’s recommendations in its PS5 console noise support guidance. A fan that becomes louder during a demanding game, by itself, is not proof that one model runs hotter.
Does the PS5 Slim have more storage?
Yes, in this model comparison: Sony lists a 1 TB SSD in the CFI-21xx Slim disc model and an 825 GB SSD in the CFI-1115A original disc model. These are advertised capacities; console software and administration reserve space, so the space available for games is lower.

Both models support storage expansion with a compatible M.2 SSD. Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guide gives capacity and physical-size requirements, excludes M.2 SATA drives, and calls for a heat-dissipation mechanism such as a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet when the drive does not have one. Sony does not guarantee that every third-party drive will work, so check the current requirements before buying.

No published specification in this comparison makes the Slim a new performance tier. Sony lists an 8-core/16-thread AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU and a 10 TFLOPS AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine for the named Slim model; the cited original guide lists the same broad CPU and GPU classes and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory.

Those specifications do not establish identical frame rates or load times in every game, and they are not a substitute for game-by-game benchmarks. They do support treating the Slim primarily as a smaller redesign rather than a performance upgrade.

What should you compare before buying?
- Model number: Check the CFI code, since dimensions, weight, and capacity can vary across revisions.
- Disc-drive needs: Compare the exact drive configuration and consider whether you already own games on disc.
- Space and placement: Check the console’s dimensions against your setup and leave airflow clearance.
- Storage: Compare advertised capacity, remembering that usable free space is lower; consider M.2 expansion only if you need it.
- Price and condition: Compare the actual offer, warranty, and condition for your region. Prices and stock vary, so there is no single price verdict here.
