PS5 system software updates maintain the console and can add features that affect supported games, but they are not the same as game patches—and they do not automatically make every game run better. The effect depends on the PS5 model, the game’s support, relevant settings, and whether the game itself has been updated.
What a PS5 system software update changes
System software is the console’s platform software: it manages core functions and can deliver security fixes, stability work, interface and communication features, and updates to connected-device software such as DualSense controller software. Some releases also add options that affect supported games.
Sony’s US release-notes page listed version 26.06-14.10.00 when checked. Its notes say the release made security fixes and improved system software performance and stability. Those are Sony’s descriptions of the update; they are not a published game-performance test or a quantified promise about frame rates or loading times. Sony’s PS5 system software release notes can change as new versions and details are posted.
The preceding 26.06-14.00.00 entry described additional changes, including enabling “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” by default, a voice-chat speaker indicator, and a Community Activity widget. Other releases have added features such as Power Saver for supported games and audio focus for headphone users. This illustrates why update effects vary: some changes are mostly maintenance or interface work, while others can alter an eligible game’s settings or image.

System software updates and game patches are different
A console update does not automatically update every installed game. PS5 system software has its own update process; games and apps update separately. Sony says a game or app updates to the newest available version when started, and you can check manually by highlighting it, pressing the options button, then selecting Check for Update. A system feature may also require the game to support it, sometimes through a separate game update. Installing the latest console software alone does not guarantee that every title will use every new capability.

How system updates can affect gameplay or visuals

The PSSR announcement names supported games including Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Crimson Desert. Support is title-specific, so check the game’s current update information as well as Sony’s feature notes.
Developers have described the visual change positively, but their comments are opinions about their own games rather than independent, cross-game measurements. Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews said improved PSSR helped preserve the creative vision of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, particularly in particle effects. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at Square Enix, said fine detail such as character hair appeared more naturally restored, with less flickering and afterimage. These statements do not establish a universal result for other games.

How to tell whether an update will affect your game
- Identify your console model. A feature such as upgraded PSSR is specifically for PS5 Pro; do not assume it applies to a standard PS5.
- Check the system release notes. Look for a named feature or supported-game list, rather than treating a general “performance and stability” note as a game-specific change.
- Check the game’s support and version. Confirm that the title supports the feature and install its own update if one is available. On the PS5 home screen, highlight the game, press the options button, and choose Check for Update.
- Review the relevant setting. For Power Saver, check whether it is enabled for that supported game. The feature’s documented performance trade-off applies only when enabled in a compatible title.
Sony’s qualitative system notes do not provide a current, cross-game statistic showing how much PS5 game performance changes after a system update. A claim that all games will run faster—or slower—would go beyond what those notes establish.
Update the console and confirm its version
For the normal online update, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If a newer version is available, the console displays Update Available. To see what is installed, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information; Sony says Up to date means the latest version is installed. See Sony’s system software update instructions.

If a network update repeatedly fails
Sony documents a manual update using a computer and USB storage. This is an alternative troubleshooting route, not a requirement for ordinary online updates. Use Sony’s official update file and follow its current instructions:
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create folders named
PS5and, inside it,UPDATE. - Download the official update file and save it in the
UPDATEfolder asPS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. - Start the PS5 in Safe Mode, then select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
Follow Sony’s current update and USB instructions for the official file and exact procedure. If you are considering a Safe Mode option instead, check its consequences first: Sony’s Safe Mode guide says Repair Console Storage does not erase data, Clear System Software Cache may help with system-feature issues or performance drops, and Rebuild Database scans the drive. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and removes the system software; back up data and follow Sony’s guidance before using it.

Update safely
- Use only Sony’s official update file and documented installation methods.
- Do not turn off the console while installation is in progress.
- Sony advises against installing immediately before or after a power outage.
- Sony warns that unofficial files or methods may prevent normal operation and can affect warranty or repair service.
