A PS5 USB port that will not charge, pair a controller, or recognize a drive is usually traceable to the cable, accessory, debris, Rest Mode power settings, or a damaged port. Test those variables in order before considering repair. Stop immediately if the connector is hot, smells burned, sparks, or is physically loose.
First, identify what “not working” means
Charging, data transfer, controller pairing, USB-storage recognition, and Safe Mode use are different functions. A port can provide power while its data lines fail, so “it charges but is not recognized” does not prove the port is completely dead.
- Controller will not charge: suspect the cable, debris, port contacts, or Rest Mode power.
- Controller charges but will not pair: suspect a charge-only cable, controller fault, or data failure.
- USB drive has power but is not detected: check formatting, compatibility, capacity, and the drive itself.
- Works only when the PS5 is on: check the Rest Mode USB-power setting.
- Loose connector, heat, scorch marks, or burning smell: treat it as hardware or electrical damage and stop testing.
Know your PS5’s ports
Port layouts vary by model. On the launch/original PS5 (CFI-1000 group), Sony lists a front USB Type-A port (Hi-Speed USB), a front USB Type-C port (SuperSpeed USB up to 10 Gbps), and two rear USB Type-A SuperSpeed ports (up to 10 Gbps). See Sony’s PS5 specifications and support page.
The PS5 Slim has a different front arrangement, including two front USB-C ports; do not rely on a launch-model photograph. iFixit’s PS5 Slim reference can help identify the model. Port shape, speed, and behavior are not automatically identical.

Fix 1: use a known-good data-and-charging cable
For a DualSense controller, pairing, Safe Mode, and data transfer require a cable with data lines. A charge-only cable can charge a controller yet make a working console appear unable to detect it. Try a different, known-good USB cable that explicitly supports both charging and data, with the connector fitting firmly and without force.
Fix 2: change one variable at a time
- Test the suspect accessory with the replacement cable.
- Try that combination in every appropriate PS5 port.
- Test a second controller, drive, headset, or other compatible accessory.
- If possible, test the cable and accessory on another compatible device.
If an accessory works in one PS5 port but not another, the individual port is the likely fault. If nothing works in any port, continue with power and software checks before concluding that the USB board has failed.
Fix 3: fully power-cycle the console
Rest Mode is not the same as a complete shutdown. From the home screen, open Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5. Wait until the console is fully off, unplug its AC power for several minutes, reconnect it, and test again. This clears temporary power-management states without deleting your data.
Fix 4: enable USB power in Rest Mode
If charging works while the PS5 is fully on but stops in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports and choose an option that supplies power. This setting affects power during Rest Mode only; it cannot repair a port that fails while the console is on or restore missing data communication. Fix 5: inspect the port safely
Turn the PS5 off, disconnect AC power, and use a bright light. Compare the suspect port with a working one. Look for lint, dust, foreign objects, bent contacts, a displaced internal tongue, scorch marks, or a connector that moves excessively.
Remove only loose, visible debris without force. Do not insert pins, knives, metal picks, or other improvised tools, and do not spray liquid or household cleaner into the port. Cleaning may restore contact when debris is the only problem; it cannot fix bent contacts, broken solder joints, a damaged USB board, or a motherboard fault.
Fix 6: update PS5 system software
If the console reaches the home screen, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Use Sony’s official instructions at PS5 system software support.
Do not download update files from unofficial mirrors. For a manual update, Sony requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with uppercase folders named PS5 and UPDATE and the official update file placed in the required location. That procedure is different from ordinary USB-storage use.

Fix 7: use Safe Mode carefully
Safe Mode is useful when normal software functions are unavailable, but it still requires a controller connected by a data-capable USB cable.
- Turn the PS5 off.
- Press and hold the power button; release it after the second beep (about seven seconds after the first).
- Connect the controller with a confirmed data cable and press the PS button.
- Choose the least destructive option appropriate to the symptom.
Restart PS5 exits Safe Mode. Repair Console Storage is intended for storage/startup issues and does not erase data. Update System Software can update from the network or a correctly prepared USB drive. Restore Default Settings restores settings without deleting console-storage content, according to Sony. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database may address certain system-feature or performance problems.
Do not jump to Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): both delete user data, and the latter also removes the system software. See Sony’s Safe Mode instructions.

If a USB drive is not recognized
Power does not equal recognition. Verify the drive’s file system, capacity, compatibility, and condition. For manual system updates, use FAT32 or exFAT and Sony’s exact PS5/UPDATE folder structure and official file. A drive that works elsewhere but not on any PS5 port may indicate a console-side data fault; a single incompatible or failing drive does not prove the port is bad.
Can you replace the PS5 USB port yourself?
Advanced repairers can replace the USB board; iFixit documents the disassembly in its PS5 USB Board Replacement guide. This is not a beginner fix: it requires precision tools, screw and cable management, ESD precautions, and acceptance of the risk of damaging the console. Confirm the fault is hardware-related and check warranty or official-service options first.
A board replacement is not a universal answer. Failed power-protection components, traces, USB controllers, or motherboard circuits may require board-level diagnosis and microsoldering.
When to contact Sony or a repair shop
Use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic first if the console may be under warranty or a consumer-protection period, multiple ports fail, Safe Mode cannot detect any controller, or there is heat, smell, sparking, repeated shutdown, or visible damage. Do not make blanket assumptions about warranty consequences; they depend on region, terms, and damage.

For an out-of-warranty console, a reputable independent shop can replace a port or diagnose board-level faults. Request a diagnosis and written estimate, confirmation that saved data will not be erased, the part’s condition (original, refurbished, or third-party), the repair warranty, and the shop’s policy if the repair fails.

Why does my PS5 charge a controller but not recognize it?
The cable may be charge-only or its data conductors may be damaged. Try a confirmed data cable and another port before blaming the controller.
Can I use any USB-C cable with DualSense?
No. Charging may work with many cables, but pairing and Safe Mode require a cable that supports data transfer and fits securely.

Loose debris can sometimes be removed cautiously, but avoid force, liquid, and improvised metal tools. Stop if contacts are bent or the port is loose.
Should I factory-reset the PS5 for a USB problem?
No. Reset options are not first-line USB repairs and can erase user data. Test cables, accessories, ports, power, updates, and non-destructive Safe Mode options first.
Can I use a rear port instead of a broken front port?
Yes, when the accessory and task are supported by that port. A working rear port is a practical workaround, not a repair of the failed front port.
