Choose a PS5 if you want a dedicated system with a simpler setup; choose a gaming PC if you value upgrade options and uses beyond gaming. Neither is automatically cheaper over time, and neither guarantees access to every new release on the same day. Compare the local price of the hardware you actually need, the equipment you already own, your likely game purchases, and the availability and requirements of the specific games you want.
What changes most between a PS5 and a gaming PC?

These are platform-level differences, not promises about every game or machine. Sony publishes different minimum PC requirements for individual games, while a PS5 gives developers a more consistent hardware target. HP’s descriptions are broad comparisons, not guarantees that every PC is difficult to configure or every console game works without friction.

How to compare the real cost
Start with the hardware price in your country, then add only costs that apply to your situation. A PC price should refer to a specified configuration capable of running the games you want—not an unspecified “gaming PC.” A console price should identify the PS5 model. Include a display, keyboard, mouse, or controller only if you need to buy them. Then consider planned games, any online subscription needed for your play style, and upgrades you expect to make.

- Hardware: Compare the local price of the PS5 model you are considering with a named PC configuration suited to your target games.
- Equipment: Count existing monitors and input devices as already owned; add replacements or missing equipment only where needed.
- Games and online play: Compare the titles you expect to buy and verify whether your chosen games and play style require a subscription. Subscription costs are not included here because current local pricing and individual requirements are not established.
- Upgrades: Include PC upgrades only if you realistically expect to make them. They are an option, not an unavoidable cost.
HP’s 2026 comparison gives illustrative five-year totals of $1,400–$3,900 for gaming PCs and $1,260–$2,250 for consoles. These broad estimates depend on assumptions about hardware tiers, peripherals, upgrades, subscriptions, and game purchases; they are not a like-for-like quote for a PC matched to a particular PS5 or a guarantee that one platform costs less. Use them as an example of how wide ownership costs can vary, not as your budget.

How convenience and flexibility differ
PS5: a more fixed, dedicated path
A PS5 avoids choosing and balancing PC components: you select a console model, connect it, and play games made available for PlayStation. That fixed hardware target makes the decision more straightforward, though game availability, installation, and any online requirements still depend on the title and how you play.

Gaming PC: more configuration and broader uses
A PC gives you more choice over components and the option to upgrade them, and it can handle work or other computing tasks. In exchange, you need to match the machine to each game’s requirements. Sony’s support pages show that PC requirements differ by game, so check the minimum requirements for the exact titles you plan to play rather than relying on the label “gaming PC.”
You can connect a DualSense controller to supported Windows PCs, according to Sony, but individual game support varies. Treat this as evidence of compatibility—not a guarantee that every title supports the controller or all of its features. Will the new releases you want be available on both?
Do not assume that a game will launch on PS5 and PC at the same time, or at all on both. Sony lists PlayStation games available for PC, but platform availability and release dates are title-specific. For each game on your shortlist, check its official platform listing and release date. If considering PC, check that game’s PC system requirements against the exact computer configuration you are pricing.
Steam’s hardware survey can offer context about the hardware used by Steam customers, but it is monthly, optional, and anonymous. It describes that population—not all PC owners—and is not a benchmark comparing PC performance with PS5. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey describes the survey.
What the PS5 Digital Edition and 2028 disc announcement mean
Model choice matters if you care about discs: compare the specific console and drive configuration available where you live, rather than treating every PS5 as interchangeable. Sony says newly released games on PlayStation will be available digitally only starting January 2028. That statement is specifically about newly released PlayStation games from that date; it does not establish a rule about used discs, existing physical releases, or games on other platforms.
