For raw graphics performance, an RTX 3090-equipped PC is substantially more powerful than the standard PS5. It offers more rendering headroom, dedicated 24 GB of video memory, adjustable graphics settings and access to DLSS in supported games. The PS5 is a complete, simpler-to-use gaming system, though, and can be the better choice if you want PlayStation games and a predictable living-room setup without building or maintaining a PC.
This is not a direct console-versus-card comparison: the PS5 includes a CPU, storage and operating system; an RTX 3090 is only a graphics card. The PC’s processor and the cost of the rest of its parts matter to both performance and value. Here, “PS5” means the standard model family, including the slim version—not PS5 Pro.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Sony’s original PS5 specification describes a custom eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU, an RDNA 2-based GPU rated at up to 10.3 theoretical TFLOPS, and 16 GB of shared GDDR6 memory with 448 GB/s bandwidth. The original design includes an 825 GB SSD with 5.5 GB/s raw read bandwidth. Later slim models have different built-in storage capacity; Sony’s U.S. store lists a slim 1 TB model. Sony’s PS5 specifications and 1 TB product listing describe those respective versions.
NVIDIA lists the RTX 3090 with 10,496 CUDA cores, 24 GB of GDDR6X memory, a 384-bit memory interface, 35.6 theoretical FP32 TFLOPS, second-generation RT cores and third-generation Tensor cores. Its listed graphics-card power is 350 W, and NVIDIA recommends a 750 W system power supply. The card does not include a CPU, system memory, storage or other PC components. See NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 specifications.

These numbers are not a gaming-performance ratio. TFLOPS are a theoretical throughput measure, not a frame-rate benchmark. The PS5’s memory is shared by CPU and GPU, while an RTX 3090 uses dedicated graphics memory alongside separately installed PC system RAM. Architecture, game engine, settings, CPU, drivers and reconstruction techniques all affect what appears on screen.
Gaming performance: where the RTX 3090 pulls ahead
Rasterized graphics and resolution
In a suitable PC, the RTX 3090 has substantially more graphics headroom than the base PS5. It can support higher settings, high-refresh gaming at 1440p and stronger 4K performance in many rasterized games. The PC also lets players tune individual options—such as shadows, textures and anti-aliasing—instead of choosing from a developer’s console modes.
That does not mean every PC version runs better. Performance depends on the game and its port, and a poorly optimized PC release can undermine powerful hardware. Historical RTX 3090 testing found it roughly 10–15% faster than an RTX 3080 in the tested contemporary workloads, not a universal multiplier over consoles or a guarantee for current games. See the specific test contexts in PCWorld’s review and TechSpot’s review.
What PS5 performance modes mean
PS5 games commonly offer fidelity or quality modes that prioritize detail and may target 30 frames per second, alongside performance modes that target 60 fps with changes to resolution or visual settings. Selected games offer 120 fps modes. A target is not the same as a locked frame rate: results vary by title and demanding scene.

“4K” also does not always mean every frame is rendered natively at 3840 × 2160. A game may use dynamic resolution, temporal reconstruction or another technique to produce a 4K output. PC games can likewise use upscaling rather than native rendering. For a meaningful comparison, identify the internal resolution, output resolution, graphics settings and frame-rate behavior—not just the resolution printed on a box or menu.
Sony lists support for compatible 4K/120 Hz displays and VRR, but the game, display and connection must support the selected mode. VRR can smooth supported fluctuations; it does not turn a 30 fps game into a 60 fps one. Sony’s PS5 feature page outlines platform capabilities.
Ray tracing and upscaling
Different hardware, different choices
Both platforms support hardware-accelerated ray tracing, but they do not offer identical performance or implementation. The RTX 3090 has dedicated RT cores and Tensor cores; supported PC games can use DLSS to reconstruct an image from a lower internal resolution. The PS5’s custom GPU also accelerates ray tracing, while console developers choose which effects and compromises fit a particular title and mode. Sony discusses the console’s ray-tracing support in its PS5 FAQ.
On PS5, enabling ray-traced effects may mean a lower frame-rate target, reduced resolution or cuts elsewhere. PC games may expose more granular choices, but heavy ray tracing can still challenge an RTX 3090. Standard ray tracing and path tracing are not interchangeable workloads; path tracing is especially demanding. Experimental path-tracing demonstrations on base PS5 hardware involved major resolution compromises and should not be read as a typical PS5 game mode. Digital Citizen’s summary describes that test context.

DLSS is useful, but title-specific
DLSS can improve the balance between image quality and frame rate on the RTX 3090 when a game supports it. It is not available in every title, and results depend on the game and chosen mode. PS5 developers instead use their own temporal reconstruction, dynamic resolution and other game-specific techniques. Neither platform’s upscaling should be treated as equivalent to native rendering in every situation.
The RTX 3090 is an Ampere card, not a newer-generation model. Do not assume it has features introduced on later GPUs. Check support for the exact game and feature rather than generalizing from the DLSS label; NVIDIA’s specification page identifies the RTX 3090’s hardware generation.
The PC’s CPU changes the result
An RTX 3090 cannot determine a PC’s frame rate by itself. The PC needs a CPU, and a weak or older processor can limit performance, particularly in simulation-heavy or open-world games and when pursuing high frame rates at lower resolutions. The same card may therefore perform differently in two PCs. A fair comparison should identify the processor, memory, game version, settings and resolution, as well as the GPU.
The PS5’s processor is part of a fixed platform that developers can target directly. Sony’s technical overview describes the console’s custom hardware and integrated I/O approach. This fixed target can help studios optimize for the system, though it does not guarantee that every PS5 game will be perfectly smooth or that every PC port will be poor.

Memory, storage and loading
The RTX 3090’s 24 GB of dedicated VRAM gives games and creative applications more room for high-resolution assets, large textures and some demanding workloads. Capacity alone does not guarantee higher frame rates; it mainly helps avoid memory constraints when a workload needs it. The PS5’s 16 GB is unified memory shared across the system, not 16 GB reserved exclusively for graphics.
The original PS5’s SSD and custom I/O system were designed to stream game assets quickly. The original 825 GB capacity and the 1 TB slim listing refer to different hardware versions, not a single storage specification. The RTX 3090 has no storage: the PC builder chooses its SSDs and other components. PS5 owners can also expand storage with a compatible M.2 SSD; consult Sony’s current M.2 SSD installation requirements before buying a drive.
Power, cooling and used-card risks
The original disc PS5 specification lists 350 W, while NVIDIA lists 350 W for the RTX 3090 graphics card alone and recommends a 750 W system PSU. Those figures are not directly comparable measures of whole-system consumption: the PC’s CPU and other components use additional power. Real draw varies with workload and system configuration.
The RTX 3090 is a large, high-power card, and the exact cooler and dimensions vary by model. A used card deserves an inspection beyond its advertised memory capacity. Check the return window, warranty, fan condition, temperatures under load, power connectors and whether the case has room and airflow. GDDR6X memory can run hot, and aged thermal pads or heavy prior use can affect cooling. A 750 W recommendation is NVIDIA’s baseline guidance, not a substitute for checking the particular system and PSU.

Price and total cost
As observed on PlayStation Direct’s U.S. store on August 16, 2026, listed prices were $599 for a digital PS5 with 825 GB, $649 for a 1 TB PS5 console and $899 for a 2 TB PS5 Pro. These are U.S. direct-store price signals, not guarantees of current price or availability; tax, bundles, promotions and stock can vary. This comparison concerns the standard PS5, not the Pro. Check the PlayStation Direct U.S. listings for current models.
The RTX 3090 launched at an NVIDIA MSRP of $1,499, but that is a historical launch price, not a 2026 used-market quote. It is no longer a current-generation retail card, so a buyer should compare dated listings for the exact condition, model, return policy and warranty. NVIDIA’s launch announcement is the source for the historical price.
If you are starting from zero, compare the cost of an entire PC, not the graphics card alone:

Include games, subscriptions, storage expansion and any display you still need in either platform’s budget. A used 3090 PC may be compelling if its other components are suitable and its price is right; a PS5 is a more straightforward purchase when you need a complete gaming system. In 2026, also compare newer GPUs at the actual budget: they may offer better efficiency, newer features and warranty support, though not necessarily 24 GB of VRAM.
Which should you choose?
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want a simple living-room system and PlayStation games | Standard PS5 | It is a complete console with fixed hardware, console-focused setup and DualSense support. |
| You already own a suitable PC and want more graphics headroom | RTX 3090 PC | The card can deliver higher performance, but the rest of the PC must not bottleneck it. |
| You are starting from zero and only need a gaming machine | Usually PS5 for simplicity; compare full PC cost | A GPU-only price omits the components required to run it. |
| You prioritize high-refresh 1440p or 4K PC gaming | RTX 3090 PC | It provides more adjustable performance headroom; results still depend on CPU and game. |
| You mainly want a console experience on a 4K TV | PS5 | It supports compatible 4K output, with game modes determining resolution and frame rate. |
| You value mods, ultrawide displays or PC software | RTX 3090 PC | Those options belong to the broader PC platform, not the graphics card alone. |
| You are considering a used 3090 without warranty or clear condition | Compare a newer GPU or complete system | Power, heat, wear and repair risk can outweigh the card’s raw capability. |
Bottom line
The RTX 3090 is the clear winner for raw graphics capability, adjustable settings and PC flexibility—but only as part of a properly balanced PC. The standard PS5 is the better fit for a complete, simpler console experience and PlayStation-specific games. Decide based on the whole system, the games you actually play and whether you value maximum performance or minimum setup.
