A hardware leaker has reportedly put the next PlayStation home console at up to 30 GB of GDDR7 memory and Sony’s rumored handheld at 24 GB of LPDDR5X. Those figures come from claims attributed to KeplerL2 and reported by Insider Gaming—not from a Sony announcement or published specification. The memory details, bandwidth estimates and even the handheld’s reported codename, “Canis,” remain unconfirmed.

The claims were attributed to KeplerL2, a hardware-focused leaker whose prior PlayStation hardware comments have drawn attention. That history helps explain the interest in the report, but it does not verify these particular figures. The claims appear in a NeoGAF rumor discussion, not a Sony technical document.
How the alleged PS6 30 GB configuration could work
Thirty gigabytes is an unusual capacity for a console memory pool. The forum discussion describes a possible arrangement using 3 GB memory modules in a clamshell configuration—packages arranged on both sides of the board or otherwise paired around memory channels. It also discusses a 160-bit bus. This is a proposed explanation for the figure, not a confirmed description of Sony’s motherboard or final design.

Insider Gaming reports roughly 640 GB/s, while calculations in the original discussion vary from about 720 to 800 GB/s under different assumed GDDR7 speeds. The difference illustrates why the speed assumption matters: bandwidth depends on both the bus width and the memory’s data rate. None of these estimates should be treated as a final PS6 specification.

What “30 GB of GDDR7” does—and does not—tell us
- Capacity is how much data memory can hold. A larger pool can give a game and the system more room for assets and working data.
- Memory type describes the technology. GDDR7 is high-bandwidth graphics memory; the type alone does not establish a console’s performance.
- Bus width and bandwidth describe the connection and the theoretical rate of data transfer. A narrower bus is not automatically slow: memory speed also matters.
- Usable memory may be less than installed capacity. The operating system, background services and other system functions can reserve part of a unified pool.
The PS5 is commonly specified with 16 GB of GDDR6. If the 30 GB rumor were accurate, that would be 87.5% more installed capacity—not twice as much, and not necessarily 87.5% more available to games. Differences in memory type, bandwidth and system allocation also make a simple capacity comparison incomplete.
Why 24 GB in a handheld would be notable—but not decisive
LPDDR5X is a low-power memory technology suited to battery-powered devices. A 24 GB pool could provide room for large assets, game data and system tasks, but it would not make a handheld equivalent to a home console. The device would still have to balance memory bandwidth against power draw, cooling and battery life, while its CPU, GPU, clocks, storage and display targets would all shape the experience.

More capacity cannot compensate automatically for limited bandwidth or GPU resources. Nor does a memory figure reveal the resolution or frame rate a device can sustain. A handheld-PC comparison, such as the ROG Xbox Ally X mentioned in Insider Gaming’s coverage, offers context for the size of the alleged pool; it is not evidence that Sony’s rumored device would match a PC handheld’s performance. Console and PC memory designs and software use differ.

This is not the first reported memory figure for Sony’s possible handheld. Earlier coverage relayed a claim of 16 GB of LPDDR5X, alongside lower bandwidth than a base PS5 and possible architectural techniques such as additional cache, compression or AI-assisted upscaling. The newer 24 GB claim could reflect a revised estimate, a different development configuration or a different interpretation of installed versus usable memory. The available reporting does not resolve the discrepancy, so 24 GB should not be presented as a settled replacement for 16 GB.
What the figures cannot establish
Memory capacity is only one part of performance. GPU architecture and resources affect rendering and compute; CPU capability shapes simulation and potential frame rates; storage and decompression affect asset streaming; and software optimization can change how efficiently a game uses the hardware. Without confirmed hardware details and independent tests, these rumors do not establish PS6 performance, ray-tracing capability, resolution, frame rates, price or release date.

They also do not establish the handheld’s compatibility policy. The rumor discussion does not provide a confirmed list of games or prove that the device will run every PS6 title natively. A lower-power handheld could support selected PS5 games, use scalable versions of future games, rely on streaming for some experiences, or have title-by-title compatibility—but those are possibilities, not confirmed plans from Sony.
Some coverage has also repeated earlier speculation about a 2027 PS6 launch. No Sony release date is established by the sources behind these memory claims, so a year or launch window should not be inferred from them.

What to take from the rumor
If the claims are accurate, Sony may be considering substantial memory pools for both a future home console and a lower-power handheld. The most concrete reported numbers are 30 GB of GDDR7 for PS6 and 24 GB of LPDDR5X for the handheld, with the PS6 bus and bandwidth details less settled and an older 16 GB handheld claim still unresolved. Until Sony confirms a design, treat every figure as a rumor—not a buying signal or a performance forecast.
