A February 2026 leak claims Sony’s next console could use 30GB of GDDR7 memory, but Sony has not announced the PS6 or confirmed any of its specifications. The reported design would deliver 640GB/s of bandwidth—more than the PS5’s official 448GB/s—if its rumored memory speed and bus are accurate.
What the PS6 memory leak claims
The figures trace to hardware leaker Kepler_L2, reportedly posting on the NeoGAF forums. Secondary reports describe the leaker as having a history of accurate hardware information, but that record does not independently verify this claim. Multiple outlets repeating the same post are coverage of one leak, not separate confirmation. TechSpot’s report attributes the alleged specification to Kepler_L2.

- A 160-bit memory bus
- A memory data rate of 32Gbps
- A claimed peak bandwidth of 640GB/s
The unusual 30GB total is explained by the alleged module layout: ten modules multiplied by 3GB each. A few stories have also referred to 32GB, including an inconsistent reference in Tom’s Guide’s coverage. The claim being assessed here is 30GB; ten 3GB modules add up to 30GB. There is no official Sony documentation to settle the discrepancy.

The bandwidth arithmetic is also internally consistent: a 160-bit bus moves 20 bytes per transfer, and at 32Gbps per pin that works out to 640GB/s. That makes the reported figures compatible with one another, not proof that Sony selected this design.

Sony lists the PS5’s memory as 16GB of GDDR6 with 448GB/s of bandwidth in its official specifications. If the PS6 leak is accurate, it would mean 87.5% more total memory and about 42.9% more bandwidth than the original PS5.

The reported PS6 bus is narrower than the PS5’s, but bus width alone does not determine bandwidth: the alleged PS6 design pairs that 160-bit bus with faster GDDR7. Capacity and bandwidth also do different jobs. Capacity is how much data can be held in memory; bandwidth is how quickly data can move between memory and the processor. Latency, cache, compression, GPU and CPU design, storage streaming, and power limits also shape performance.

What more memory could mean for games
A larger unified memory pool could give developers more room for high-resolution textures, detailed geometry, world assets, animation, and simulation data. It could provide headroom for demanding rendering techniques such as ray tracing, or make it easier to keep more assets available without repeatedly streaming them from storage. That headroom might also help a console remain capable as games grow more demanding over a generation.

These are possibilities, not promises. More memory alone does not guarantee 4K resolution, a particular frame rate, better ray tracing, or larger game worlds. The PS5’s memory is shared across system functions, and a future console’s operating system and services would also use some of its pool. So “30GB” would not necessarily mean 30GB available to each game. Developers would decide how to use the memory they can access, and other hardware and software constraints would still matter.

The cost question is part of the leak, but its implications remain uncertain. Notebookcheck reports that Kepler_L2 allegedly put the extra memory’s bill-of-materials cost at roughly $100 and dismissed a 20GB alternative discussed online as insufficient for the intended system. That is a leaker’s reported estimate, not a verified Sony cost figure.

A component cost is not the same as a retail-price increase. Sony could absorb some costs, adjust other components, change the memory configuration, or set a different launch margin. The final price would depend on the whole console, including its processor, cooling, storage, manufacturing yields, packaging, distribution, and any tariffs. There is no confirmed PS6 price, and figures such as $600 or $700 remain speculation.
Release timing and a possible handheld
Sony has not announced a PS6 release date. Rumors have floated late 2027 or 2028, with some later speculation extending beyond that, but none makes a launch year certain. Memory supply and pricing could affect planning, but there is no evidence that GDDR7 availability has delayed the console. Specifications and timing can change before a product reaches mass production.
The same rumor cycle includes a separate PlayStation handheld claim: a device with its own system-on-chip and 24GB of LPDDR5X memory. That is also unconfirmed and does not verify the main-console memory report. TechSpot summarizes both claims.
What PS5 owners should take from the rumor
The leak suggests Sony may be considering a substantial memory increase to provide room for future games, but it is not a sound basis by itself for deciding whether to buy a PS5 or wait for the next console. There is no official PS6 specification, launch date, or price to compare. Treat 30GB, 640GB/s, and the suggested timing as unconfirmed until Sony announces hardware details.
