PSSR and AMD FSR are related technologies, but they are not the same upscaler. PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for supported PS5 Pro games. Sony says the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network grew out of Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD, and identifies FSR 4 as another outcome of that work. That connection does not establish identical software or a universal image-quality winner.
What are PSSR and AMD FSR?
PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) uses machine learning to reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a game’s rendered image. Sony describes it as an AI-driven feature for supported PS5 Pro games, including games that use it to produce AI-enhanced 4K output on a 4K TV. That output description does not mean every game renders each frame natively at 4K. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page describes the feature and its platform context.
FSR is AMD’s upscaling family
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a family of graphics upscaling technologies. Its availability and implementation depend on the specific FSR version, game, and platform; the sources cited here do not establish a complete current compatibility matrix. Check the game’s settings and documentation rather than assuming that a particular FSR version is available everywhere.
Does PS5 Pro use FSR, and is PSSR the same as FSR 4?
Sony’s account is that the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst, its partnership with AMD. Sony also points to FSR 4 as a manifestation of that collaboration for PC gamers. This supports describing a shared development relationship, not treating PSSR as FSR 4 under another name: Sony has not said the two use identical software, models, or end-user implementations. Mark Cerny, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect, described the connection in Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement.

PSSR vs. FSR: what can be compared?
| Comparison | PSSR | AMD FSR |
|---|---|---|
| Platform context | Sony associates PSSR with PS5 Pro and games that support it. | FSR is AMD’s technology family; availability depends on the version and game. |
| Relationship | Sony says the upgraded algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst with AMD. | Sony identifies FSR 4 as an outcome of that collaboration. Identical implementations are not established. |
| Image reconstruction | Sony describes PSSR as machine-learning-based and says it analyzes images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. | A version-by-version technical comparison is not established by the sources cited here. |
| Reported image results | Sony and developers report improvements such as detail, stability, reduced flicker, or motion clarity in particular games. | No matched, controlled PSSR-versus-FSR comparison is established by the sources cited here. |
| Game support | Support is title-specific. Sony’s enhanced-PSSR option is for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. | Check support for the particular game, FSR version, and platform. |
The table compares what is documented, not a lab ranking. Sony’s September 2024 PS5 Pro announcement cited 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s console-hardware figures, not a PSSR-versus-FSR test result. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement provides the figures and their context.
Which looks better: PSSR or FSR?
There is no supported universal winner. Upscaling quality depends on the game’s implementation, platform, patch, graphics mode, and moving content—not just the name of the technology. The official sources cited here do not provide a controlled comparison of PSSR and FSR in the same game, scene, and rendering conditions, so claims that one is categorically sharper, more stable, or faster would go beyond the evidence.

Sony and developers have described specific upgraded-PSSR results positively, but these are title-specific accounts rather than independent benchmark findings. IO Interactive technical director Henrik Schlichter said upgraded PSSR improved image quality in 007 First Light, particularly fine detail and stability. His statement concerns that game, not every PSSR title or a direct FSR comparison. The developer’s announcement provides the game-specific context.
How to compare them in a game

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check thin geometry, hair, foliage, and particles for shimmer or flicker.
- Watch moving objects and camera pans for ghosting, detail loss, or image instability.
- Compare sharpness alongside motion clarity; a crisp still frame does not establish stable motion.
- Separate internal rendering resolution from reconstructed output resolution and frame rate. A 4K output signal alone does not show that the game renders natively at 4K.
Also check the game’s graphics settings and patch notes. Upscaling is implemented by developers, and support or behavior can vary between platform versions and modes.
Which PS5 games support upgraded PSSR?
PSSR support is per game, not a console-wide switch that applies to every title. Sony said in February 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is Sony’s count as of its February 27, 2026 announcement, not a current October 2026 total. In March 2026, Sony named games including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Crimson Desert in its upgraded-PSSR rollout communication. Check Sony’s rollout announcement and each game’s current notes for applicable support.

Enhanced PSSR is optional in supported games
Sony describes an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. Results may vary by title, and Sony says players can turn the setting off if unexpected visual effects occur. The option does not add PSSR support to a game that lacks it. See Sony’s March 2026 explanation for the setting and caveat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the base PS5 have PSSR?
No—not the PS5 Pro implementation described above. On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a separate performance-tier AI upscaling library for base PS5. Sony distinguishes QSSR from PSSR on PS5 Pro; the names do not mean base PS5 has the same PSSR implementation. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes the scope of the base-PS5 feature.
