The move unified the public-facing identity of PTW, 1518 Studios, Ghostpunch Games and the established SIDE audio business under one broader game-services brand. It followed acquisitions, new studio expansion and a strategy to present development, art, audio, QA, localization and support as connected capabilities.
The announcement establishes a brand unification; it does not, by itself, prove that every underlying PTW legal entity was dissolved or renamed. Clients should continue to verify the contracting entity, account contacts and contract terms directly with Side.
What changed when PTW became Side?
PTW—originally Pole To Win, founded in Japan in 1994—became Side as its public-facing umbrella brand. The company historically built a strong reputation in game quality assurance and later expanded into audio, development support and other production services.
Side’s announcement named four businesses brought under the unified identity:

The company said the rebrand reflected organic and acquisition-led growth, international expansion and a desire to operate as one team for game developers and publishers. The official announcement describes the strategic rationale, but does not state that all subsidiaries legally changed names.
Why did PTW rebrand?
PTW had expanded beyond its original testing-focused identity. Separate specialist brands could signal expertise, but they could also make a large, multi-service organization harder for clients to understand and buy from.
Side positions the rebrand as a shift toward a single production partner capable of combining specialist teams. That proposition includes development and co-development, creative production, testing, localization, audio, player support and data services. The practical goal is simpler procurement and coordination: a publisher might source several disciplines through one commercial relationship rather than manage unrelated vendors.
This is a positioning strategy, not proof that every project now uses one integrated team. Clients should confirm how services are staffed, managed and contracted for their specific engagement.

The acquisitions and expansions behind the new identity
The rebrand followed several developments that broadened the company’s capabilities:
- Ghostpunch Games: PTW announced the acquisition of the Florida development studio’s assets and business on August 27, 2024. Side said the deal strengthened its co-development offering. See the company announcement and the contemporaneous Business Wire release.
- Charleston, South Carolina: Side announced a new North American studio, adding to its regional development footprint. See Side’s announcement.
- Braga, Portugal: The rebrand announcement also cited expanded studio operations in Braga.
- Vibe Avenue: Side’s audio division announced the acquisition of Montreal-based Vibe Avenue for $1.46 million in October 2023, according to VentureBeat. That transaction predates the rebrand and is background to the company’s broader expansion rather than a stated direct cause of it. See VentureBeat’s report.
What services does Side provide?
At launch, Side listed co-development, art production, localization, audio production, quality assurance, localization QA, player support, community management and datasets.
Its current public service pages describe a wider portfolio, including:
- Development: co-development, engineering, game design, porting and technical support.
- Art: asset production, animation, rigging and visual effects.
- Audio: music, sound design, voice-over and performance capture. Side’s audio-services page reflects the business’s pre-existing audio heritage.
- Testing: functional QA, localization QA, test automation, certification testing and playtesting.
- Localization: translation, culturalization and language testing.
- Player operations: player support and community services.
- Data and technology: data collection, annotation, evaluation, text-to-speech and automatic speech-recognition work, as well as IT and security testing.
Side’s game-development page describes teams that can integrate with client production pipelines across systems, features, engineering, art, animation, QA, audio and planning. That makes Side primarily a business-to-business game-development services provider, rather than a conventional publisher or consumer-facing game studio.

What does the rebrand mean for clients?
The clearest client-facing change is the name used in marketing and new business discussions. Existing work may continue to involve the same studios, employees and production processes, but the public material does not establish that contracts, rates, personnel or delivery arrangements automatically changed.
Prospective clients should ask:
- Which Side or Pole To Win legal entity will sign the agreement?
- Are existing PTW contracts and purchase orders still valid, and do they require amended paperwork?
- Will the work use a dedicated team or a project-specific staffing pool?
- Which location will perform the work, and where will confidential data be stored?
- What engine, build system, source-control, bug-tracking and platform-certification requirements are supported?
- Who owns escalation, defect triage, localization review and final acceptance?
- How are rates, minimum commitments, overtime, rush work and change orders calculated?
Side does not publish a standard rate card or self-serve pricing. Its contact page routes prospects to an inquiry process, and service pages publish [email protected].
Side’s scale and global footprint
Scale figures need to be date-stamped. The March 2025 rebrand announcement said the unified business represented more than 40 studios in 15 countries. Side’s later public pages use different figures: the careers page refers to 20-plus studios across 15 countries, while the About page says 15-plus studios.
Because these figures are not reconciled publicly, the current studio count is unclear. Side’s homepage lists locations including London, Paris, Braga, Los Angeles, Montreal, São Paulo, Tokyo, Taipei, Shanghai, Seoul, Naju, Kuala Lumpur, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Charleston and Manila. A global footprint does not mean every service is available at every location, so buyers should match the required discipline, language, time zone and data requirements to a specific team.

Leadership and corporate identity
Side’s current About page lists Deborah Kirkham as chief executive officer, Teppei Tachibana as chairman, Olivier Deslandes as chief operating officer, Sijo Jose as chief services officer, Harlan Beverly as chief technology officer and Kaley Hurst as chief marketing officer.
Titles can change: the March 2025 announcement identified Hurst as chief revenue officer, while the current About page uses chief marketing officer. Side’s About material also continues to refer to Pole To Win Holdings, reinforcing why “Side” should be treated as the unified public brand rather than automatically as the legal name of every company in the group.

Side’s strategy reflects a broader direction in external game production: providers are expanding from single disciplines such as QA, audio or localization into wider combinations of development, creative services, testing and live operations.
For publishers, breadth can reduce vendor-management overhead and make it easier to scale support across regions. The trade-off is integration risk. A single large provider may not deliver the same specialist depth as a focused vendor, and acquisitions can leave questions about systems, account ownership, staffing continuity and quality governance.

Side also markets AI-assisted localization workflows. Its localization page claims up to 40% faster turnaround and up to 30% lower costs, but those are company claims rather than independently audited benchmarks. Buyers should ask which languages and content types qualify, what human review is included, how client data is handled and whether model-training restrictions apply. See Side’s localization page.
How to evaluate Side as a services partner
Side may fit publishers and developers seeking embedded co-development teams, global QA coverage, localization, audio, art production, player support or data services. Evaluation should focus less on the umbrella name than on the proposed delivery model:
- Specialization: Confirm the relevant portfolio and platform experience.
- Continuity: Establish whether the assigned team is dedicated and how turnover is managed.
- Governance: Define acceptance criteria, reporting, escalation and final signoff.
- Security: Review access controls, data retention, confidentiality and regional requirements.
- Capacity: Confirm ramp-up and ramp-down timelines, minimum commitments and peak-season support.
- Commercial terms: Compare dedicated-team, milestone, hourly, per-word, per-asset or per-test-case pricing as applicable.
Current status
As of August 18, 2026, Side remains the public-facing identity on the company’s website and continues to market global game-development and support capabilities. The rebrand is therefore more than a logo refresh: it is the company’s attempt to consolidate a collection of specialist and acquired businesses into one enterprise services proposition.
What remains unresolved from public information is the legal status of every underlying entity, the exact current studio count and whether any individual client’s contract or delivery team changed. Those are matters for direct commercial and legal confirmation, not assumptions based on the rebrand alone.
