If PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS opens to a black screen, start with the low-disruption checks: restart the PC and Steam, clear Steam launch options, then verify the game files in the launcher where you installed it. Next check Windows and graphics-driver updates, and only then try configuration changes or a reinstall. PUBG’s current official guidance covers general crashes and performance—not black screens specifically—so these are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
First, identify what the black screen is doing
Before changing settings, note whether the screen is frozen, whether audio or the cursor still responds, whether PUBG closes by itself, and whether the problem began after an update. These details help distinguish a hang from a crash and make a support request more useful; they do not, by themselves, identify the cause.
PUBG Support’s current general crashing and performance guide, updated February 26, 2026, is the closest current official guidance. Its checks are relevant to startup failures, but PUBG does not describe them as a dedicated black-screen fix.
Try the quick, reversible checks first
- Check the official system requirements. Compare your PC with the current PUBG system requirements rather than relying on older hardware lists.
- Restart the PC and Steam. PUBG’s current guide recommends restarting the PC; its older article about crashes after the PUBG logo also recommends restarting Steam. Restarting the router is included in the general guide, but a local black screen alone does not establish a network problem.
- Clear Steam launch options. In Steam, open your Library, right-click PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, select Properties, and remove all text from the Launch Options field. Legacy commands can interfere with startup, according to PUBG’s guide. This step applies to the Steam version, not Epic Games Launcher.
Verify PUBG’s files in the launcher you use
A damaged or missing installation file can contribute to a launch failure. PUBG Support explains that its Steam verification check can check files and replace them if necessary. Use the matching launcher instructions below and let the check finish before starting the game again.

| Launcher | Verification path | Before relaunching |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Library → right-click PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS → Properties → Installed Files (called Local Files in some versions of Steam) → Verify integrity of game files. Follow PUBG Support’s guide. | Wait for Steam to complete verification. |
| Epic Games Launcher | Library → select the game’s menu → Manage → Verify. Follow PUBG Epic Games Support’s instructions. | Wait for the check to finish, then launch the game. |
Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install available Windows updates, then check for the latest driver for your graphics card through its manufacturer’s update route. PUBG specifically names NVIDIA and AMD in its crashing and performance guide and notes that outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause problems. If a normal driver update does not help, PUBG also lists a clean uninstall and reinstall of the graphics driver as a possible troubleshooting step; try simpler checks first.
Try PUBG’s configuration checks
Disable overclocking temporarily
If the CPU, graphics card, or memory is overclocked, return it to its standard settings for a test launch. PUBG lists disabling hardware overclocking as a troubleshooting option. This is a diagnostic check, not a statement that overclocking is the cause.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Disable fullscreen optimizations for TslGame.exe
PUBG’s current guide includes disabling fullscreen optimizations for TslGame.exe. Locate the executable in the PUBG installation folder, open its Properties, select the Compatibility tab, enable Disable fullscreen optimizations, and apply the change. Folder paths vary by installation, so use the game’s installation location rather than assuming a default path.
Try administrator access only if needed
PUBG’s older post-logo crash article, updated May 19, 2020, suggests running Steam or the game as administrator. Treat this as an additional check, not a universal requirement; avoid leaving elevated access enabled if it does not help.

Reinstall only after the simpler checks
A clean reinstall is more disruptive because PUBG’s instructions include deleting local game files and the PUBG installation folder, then clearing Steam’s download cache. Back up any personal settings you want to keep before removing local files.
- Uninstall PUBG through Steam.
- Delete the associated local PUBG files and the PUBG installation folder, as described in PUBG Support’s reinstall instructions.
- In Steam, clear the download cache, then restart Steam.
- Reinstall PUBG and try launching it.
Contact PUBG Support if the black screen remains
Send PUBG Support enough information to reproduce or investigate the failure rather than reporting only “black screen.” PUBG asks players to provide the date the issue started, a specific description, error details, DxDiag output, and zipped crash dumps. The dump folder is %localappdata%TslGameSavedCrashes. The older post-logo article also asks for a screenshot or video and a dump file if the problem persists.
