The new AI-upscaling option arrived in patches for Ghost of Yōtei and Marvel’s Wolverine, giving players a choice of graphics settings in both games. Sony describes QSSR as a performance-oriented PS5 tier related to PSSR—not a way to make a standard PS5 equivalent to a PS5 Pro.
What is QSSR on PS5?
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as a new performance tier of AI-guided upscaling, derived from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and adapted for PS5. The aim is to reconstruct game images with more detail and stability than conventional approaches, while fitting the performance limits of the standard console.
Sony says PSSR’s computational requirements had previously prevented bringing that experience to PS5. QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on the console. Sony attributes the technology to Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony’s October 1 announcement does not provide a technical specification, benchmark, or exact rendering-resolution figures.
How QSSR differs from PSSR
Both names refer to Sony AI-upscaling technologies, but Sony distinguishes them by platform and performance tier. PSSR remains the higher-end solution for PS5 Pro; QSSR is designed to bring some image-detail and image-stability improvements to PS5.

Sony has not said QSSR makes a standard PS5 perform or look like a PS5 Pro. The distinction matters: QSSR is a PS5 graphics option, not a replacement for the Pro’s PSSR implementation. Sony’s description gives no numerical comparison between the two technologies.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named Ghost of Yōtei and Marvel’s Wolverine as the first supported games. Both received patches on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. It is optional: players can choose the available graphics setting that best suits their preference.

Marvel’s Wolverine is an action-adventure developed by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony says it launched worldwide exclusively on PS5 on September 15, 2026; its official game page lists Standard and Digital Deluxe editions and notes PSSR support on PS5 Pro. How noticeable is QSSR in the first two games?
The available hands-on comparison is title-specific. TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 report relays Digital Foundry’s analysis of both games; these are Digital Foundry’s reported observations, not results from a test conducted for this article.

- Marvel’s Wolverine: Digital Foundry reported a particularly strong image-quality boost, with better temporal stability, detail and sub-pixel integrity, plus fewer artifacts in moving foliage.
- Ghost of Yōtei: Digital Foundry reported less dramatic gains, noting that the game already had strong image quality.
Insomniac’s Head of Technology, Mike Fitzgerald, said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to the environments in Wolverine. Sucker Punch Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine character and environment details with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. Those are developer descriptions, not independent measurements. TechRadar’s report relays the comparative hands-on findings.
When will more games add QSSR?
Sony says it will make the QSSR library broadly available to PlayStation developers and anticipates more games using it. Its October 1 announcement names no further supported titles and gives no rollout schedule. Tom’s Hardware’s October 2 coverage summarizes the design and developer-access plan, but does not add a Sony-published list or timetable.

What Sony has not quantified
Sony has published no percentage improvement or named performance result for QSSR in the announcement. The cited coverage also supplies no benchmark table, frame-rate measurements, exact internal render resolutions, or hardware/API specification. That means the visible improvement should be judged game by game, rather than assumed to be identical across every QSSR implementation.
