QSSR vs. PS5 PSSR: How Sony’s Upscaling Technologies Differ

QSSR is Sony’s streamlined AI upscaling for standard PS5, while PSSR is the Pro-focused system. Here’s what Sony says, what early testing found, and what remains unknown.

QSSR is Sony’s streamlined AI upscaling option for the standard PlayStation 5; PSSR is the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution system for PS5 Pro. They share a lineage, but they are not identical implementations. Sony says QSSR is tuned to fit the standard console, while it continues to update PSSR for Pro. Early QSSR examples show that results—and any performance cost—can vary by game.

What do QSSR and PSSR mean?

QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026 as a new performance tier of AI upscaling for the standard PS5. Sony’s announcement calls it a “quick new evolution of PSSR.” That describes shared ancestry, not two names for the same implementation.

PSSR means PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling, and associates it with PS5 Pro. The technology has since received an updated Pro version. Sony’s February 2026 update describes that newer version.

How do the technologies differ?

Comparison QSSR PSSR

Implementation Sony says it uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation to maximize performance on the standard console. Sony describes pixel-by-pixel AI upscaling. The newer Pro version uses a different neural network and overall algorithm.
Stated aim Bring AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5 within its performance constraints. Provide Sony’s higher-end upscaling implementation on PS5 Pro.
Measured universal quality or speed ranking Not established by a matched QSSR-versus-PSSR comparison. Not established by a matched QSSR-versus-PSSR comparison.

Sony says PSSR’s computational demands had previously made bringing that experience to standard PS5 impossible, so QSSR is designed around that console’s constraints. Sony has not published QSSR’s specific model architecture, numerical precision, compute requirements, or a direct benchmark against PSSR.

For the newer PSSR version, Sony says it took a “very different approach” to both the neural network and algorithm. The update draws on Project Amethyst, Sony’s collaboration with AMD, and Sony also links that collaboration to AMD FSR 4. This does not mean QSSR and PSSR are simply FSR 4 under different names. Sony’s description of the updated PSSR does not make that claim.

Does QSSR improve image quality?

Sony says QSSR improves image detail and image stability on PS5. Its first announced implementations are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, each adding QSSR as an additional graphics option. Those are developer- and platform-holder claims, rather than results from a controlled comparison across multiple games.

Early independent observations reported by TechRadar on October 2, 2026 describe stronger gains in Marvel’s Wolverine than in Ghost of Yōtei. Reporting on Digital Foundry’s hands-on testing of Wolverine cites improvements to temporal stability, detail, and sub-pixel integrity, with fewer artifacts in moving foliage. The same report says the improvements looked less dramatic in Ghost of Yōtei. These two examples suggest that results depend on the game; they do not establish a result for every QSSR title.

Does QSSR reduce frame rate?

It can carry a performance cost in at least one reported test, but the available figure is specific to one game and mode. In an uncapped Performance Mode comparison of Marvel’s Wolverine, Digital Foundry founder Richard Leadbetter reported a frame rate about 8–10 frames per second lower with QSSR and estimated its frame-time cost at 1.5–1.8 milliseconds. These are early observations from that comparison, not a universal QSSR penalty or a direct test against PSSR.

Sony’s March 2026 information about upgraded PSSR also says results vary by game and notes that users can disable the image-quality enhancement if unexpected visual effects occur. Upscaling is therefore not a guaranteed improvement in every scene or implementation. Sony’s PSSR update discusses that variability.

Which games support each technology?

QSSR on standard PS5

Sony first named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as games with QSSR, offered as an additional graphics option. Sony said it would make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, but did not give a total of supported or committed games in its QSSR announcement. Availability is title-specific.

PSSR on PS5 Pro

Sony named Resident Evil Requiem as the first game to use the upgraded PSSR. Its March 2026 update lists other partner games, including Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Support depends on the game and its implementation or patch; inclusion in a partner list does not mean every title uses the same version or settings. See Sony’s list and update.

Sony said on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles to that date. Sony has not provided a comparable QSSR adoption count. Sony’s February 2026 announcement gives the PSSR figure.

Is QSSR as good as PSSR?

There is not enough evidence to declare either one universally sharper or faster. Sony positions QSSR as a streamlined, hand-tuned option for standard PS5 and PSSR as the Pro-oriented implementation, which Sony has continued to update. But the available sources do not establish a controlled, same-game comparison with identical input and output resolutions, settings, scenes, and frame-rate conditions. For a player, the practical comparison is the result in a specific supported game and graphics mode—not the technology name alone.
