“The program can’t start because qt5webkitwidgets.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” If qt5webkitwidgets.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair the application that installed it rather than copying a random DLL into Windows.
Which fix applies to you
Start with the situation that matches what happened:
- The error appeared after an update, cleanup, or interrupted installation: repair or reinstall the affected application.
- It is a game: use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files option.
- The file may have been quarantined: check Windows Security’s Protection history.
- The program is old or was moved manually: restore it to its original installation folder and reinstall if necessary.
- The message says “The specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may exist, but one of its dependencies may be missing.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows”: suspect corruption, an incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit build, or a damaged dependency.
- Several Windows components are failing: use DISM and System File Checker as secondary repairs.
- The problem began after a driver or system change: check Device Manager and consider System Restore.
The exact application matters. Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll is used by third-party Windows programs, and the filename alone cannot identify which program installed your copy.
What qt5webkitwidgets.dll is
Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll is part of Qt 5’s WebKit Widgets module. It provides browser and web-rendering functionality to Qt applications and is normally loaded as a dependency beside the program’s executable.

It is not a Windows system DLL. Windows does not normally provide it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Qt applications typically deploy their libraries in the application directory, and Windows searches that directory when resolving ordinary DLL dependencies. Microsoft documents this behavior in its guide to DLL search order.
Some public file listings identify 32-bit copies with metadata such as version 5.1.1.0 and an approximate size of 0.17 MB. That does not prove that every legitimate copy has those values. Do not choose a replacement based only on a matching filename, displayed version, or file size.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the owning application
This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to the program that installed it.
Find the program that produces the error
- Note the application, game, shortcut, or launcher you opened immediately before the message appeared.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Look for the program’s main
.exeand the surrounding Qt files.
If the error appears during startup, Windows may show the executable name in the dialog title. You can also use Task Manager:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Details.
- Start the affected program again.
- Watch for its process name, then right-click it and choose Open file location.
Do not assume that the application is the same program that most recently installed a Windows update. This is an application library, not a Windows component.
Repair the program
Use the application’s own maintenance option first:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and start the program again.
If there is no Repair button:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
For a game, open its official launcher and use its file verification command. The wording varies, but it may be called Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. This restores the complete application package rather than only replacing one DLL.
If repair fails, uninstall the program from Installed apps or Programs and Features, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or the game launcher. Back up saved games and settings first if the program stores them inside its installation directory.

Launch the same shortcut that produced the error. If the program opens normally, the Qt files were restored or the damaged dependency was replaced. If the same message returns, continue below rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus protection can remove or quarantine an application file after an update or false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the affected application or
Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll. - Open an entry to view its details.
Only restore a quarantined file when you recognize the application and obtained it from its official source. If the program came from an unofficial installer or a random DLL site, do not restore or whitelist the file. Remove the questionable program, run a scan, and reinstall from a trusted vendor source.
After restoring a legitimate file, launch the application. If Windows Security quarantines it again, leave it blocked and contact the application vendor. Repeated detection can indicate a modified, damaged, or unsafe program package.

Fix 3: Check the application architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application needs 32-bit versions of its Qt libraries, even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit program needs the corresponding 64-bit build. A DLL with the right filename but the wrong architecture will not load.
Check the application’s documentation or installer rather than guessing. Do not copy a DLL from another program, because Qt libraries from different releases or compiler builds may not be compatible.
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll is present but one of its own dependencies is missing. The missing component may be another Qt library, a compiler runtime, or an older WebKit-related library.
Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime when applicable
Some applications built with Microsoft Visual C++ require the matching Visual C++ Redistributable. Ask the application vendor which runtime it requires, or repair the runtime already listed on the computer:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entries.
- Select the architecture required by the application.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair.
For a 32-bit application, the x86 runtime is normally the relevant package, even when Windows is 64-bit. Microsoft provides the current package names and architectures on its latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable does not recreate Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll. It only addresses a compiler-runtime dependency when the application needs one. Qt programs may use a different compiler runtime or bundle their required files.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because this is a third-party application DLL, DISM and SFC are not normal ways to restore it. Use them when Windows has broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, update failures, or other protected system files failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Microsoft describes DISM in its Windows image repair instructions and documents SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands again after Windows Update has completed. If the application still reports the same Qt error, return to repairing or reinstalling that application.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when its own Qt files are missing.

A graphics or chipset driver is not the usual cause of a missing Qt library. Investigate drivers when the error began immediately after a driver installation, a major Windows update, or a game-runtime change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver, or download the correct driver from the GPU manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Also inspect Sound, video and game controllers and System devices for warning icons. Do not remove hardware entries at random. If the application is old and uses obsolete Qt WebKit, updating the application itself is generally more useful than changing unrelated drivers.

Manually hunting through many driver packages can be tedious when the cause is unclear. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, while installation through the full version is optional; it cannot replace reinstalling the program that owns Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore may help if the error began directly after a software installation, driver change, or system modification and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if shown.
- Pick a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and choose Finish.
Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide. Restore does not guarantee that a third-party Qt DLL will return, so reinstall the affected application if the error remains.
Why copying the DLL or using regsvr32 fails
Do not copy Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll into System32 or SysWOW64. Those folders are not general application repair locations, and adding a mismatched Qt library can create version conflicts. The correct location is normally the application’s own installation directory.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 Qt5WebKitWidgets.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Qt runtime libraries are normally loaded as application dependencies and do not normally require COM registration. Registration will not repair missing companion files, architecture mismatches, or an incomplete installation. Microsoft documents regsvr32 and DllRegisterServer.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading this file from an untrusted DLL repository is risky because the file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different Qt build, or omit the dependencies that caused the error. It also makes it harder for antivirus software and the application’s updater to identify the installation correctly.
Use the application developer’s official installer, launcher repair function, or built-in updater instead. If the program is abandoned and depends on an old Qt WebKit build, replace it with a maintained version where possible and avoid using its embedded browser for untrusted content.
If reinstalling still does not work
Check these items in order:
- Confirm the error-producing executable and its installation folder.
- Make sure the application was not moved by copying only its
.exe. - Check that
Qt5WebKitWidgets.dllexists beside the executable after reinstalling. - Look for additional missing Qt or compiler-runtime files.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, entering
eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs > Application for an error at the launch time. - Use a trusted dependency-analysis utility to identify which module the loader cannot find.
- Contact the application vendor with the exact executable name, Windows version, architecture, and complete error text.
FAQ
Is qt5webkitwidgets.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application library from the Qt WebKit Widgets module and is normally installed with a particular third-party program.
Which program installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the owner. The application that displays the error, its executable location, and its installer history are the useful evidence.
Should I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?
Normally no. Restore it to the owning application’s installation directory by repairing or reinstalling that program.
Is the 32-bit copy compatible with a 64-bit program?
No. A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit Qt build, and a 64-bit program needs the 64-bit build. Windows being 64-bit does not change the application’s requirement.
Will SFC restore this file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while this DLL belongs to a third-party application. Repair the application first.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes regsvr32 fix the error?
Normally no. Qt runtime libraries are dependencies, not ordinary registered COM DLLs.
What if the DLL exists but the error remains?
A dependent Qt library, Visual C++ runtime, or other WebKit component may be missing. Repair the application, verify its files, and use dependency analysis if reinstalling does not identify the missing module.
