“Quite often it’s given me more to do”: Why AI can create extra work for games companies

AI can accelerate routine work in game studios, but generation is only one step. Summit attendees described extra effort in policy, privacy, quality control, rework and HR.

Generative AI can speed up routine tasks such as coding and boilerplate writing, but that does not guarantee a faster production process. In accounts from an October 1, 2026, games-industry HR summit, studio leaders described time shifting into policy updates, data protection, output review, rework, and employee support. The examples show how those costs can arise—not how often they do across the industry.

When does AI save time—and when does it just move the work?

The distinction is between time spent generating a first draft and time spent completing the task. An AI tool may produce code or text quickly, but a team still has to check whether it is correct, compliant with studio standards, safe to use, and ready to integrate. If it fails those checks, people may need to repair or replace it.

Summit attendees described potential efficiency in coding, boilerplate writing, and other routine work, but the report supplied no measured time savings. A senior-level attendee put the creative concern more bluntly: “I haven’t seen AI create anything fun.” That is one attendee’s view, not a finding about what AI can or cannot do across game development.

The practical comparison is therefore not simply “AI output versus writing from scratch.” It is the full workflow: task setup, generation, review, correction, integration, and any rework. The summit accounts illustrate how that total can grow even when one step becomes faster.

Why do AI policies keep needing attention?

Studios setting rules for AI use face a changing technical and operational landscape. One company leader described having to revisit a policy soon after writing it: “I wrote a policy two weeks ago, and then I found out about some prompt injection yesterday that means I’ve got to go back and rewrite some of the guidelines.” The anecdote illustrates the burden of maintaining guidance; it does not establish how frequently policies change at other studios.

Rules also need to make acceptable use understandable in everyday production. A policy that does not distinguish safe, approved workflows from sensitive material may leave employees unsure what they can submit, which tools they can use, or when to seek review. That uncertainty can mean more questions and management work rather than less.

How can AI use create data-exposure risks?

Data protection was a particular concern when employees might use personal AI accounts. A leader warned that staff could enter NDA-covered material into a personal account and said it was difficult to physically prevent. The concern was about behavior and boundaries, not an assessment of any specific AI vendor or subscription’s security.

Attendees recommended clearer acceptable-use rules. For a studio, that means making the boundary explicit: which tools and workflows are approved, what kinds of confidential or NDA-covered information must not be entered, and where staff should turn when they are uncertain. The summit report does not establish that any single policy or technical control can eliminate the risk.

Why do generated assets and code still need expert review?

Fast generation does not ensure that output meets a game team’s technical or creative standards. The report recounts a generated shader that failed the studio’s coding standards and contributed to a build being reverted. In a separate example, AI-generated art with visible anatomical defects passed an initial check after approval by someone outside the relevant department, then drew criticism from the community.

These are separate anecdotes, not a failure rate. They point to two practical checks: assess the output against the standards of the discipline responsible for it, and make ownership of approval clear. If review is missing or assigned to someone without the relevant expertise, defects can survive an initial check and trigger more work later.

How can AI add work for HR and legal teams?

Attendees also described lengthy grievance letters written with AI assistance, some containing confusing or inaccurate material. HR and legal staff still had to read and respond to them. One attendee described the result this way: “And just because people are using AI or using LLMs to try and help these things, actually quite often it’s given me more to do.”

The account shows a possible shift in administrative burden: producing a document may become easier for the person submitting it, while evaluating and answering it remains necessary for staff. The report gives no estimate of the extra hours or the number of cases involved, so it cannot establish the scale of this effect.

Why can promising AI pilots fail to become reliable workflows?

The report characterized many companies as dabbling in or piloting AI workflows, with some larger studios evaluating specific use cases. It offered no representative breakdown of adoption. One speaker warned that many pilots collapse because they depend on individuals’ tacit knowledge rather than formally documented operating procedures.

That observation helps explain why a tool that appears useful in a one-off demonstration may be difficult to use consistently. A repeatable workflow needs clear steps, assigned responsibility, and documented expectations for review. Without those, the process may depend on who happens to be using it and what they know, creating additional coordination and oversight.

What should a studio assess before calling AI a time-saver?

The summit accounts support a practical evaluation, not a blanket verdict for or against AI. Before adopting a workflow, a studio can ask:

  • What task is being accelerated? Separate routine drafting or coding from work requiring substantial creative judgment.
  • What is the complete time cost? Include setup, checking, correction, integration, and rework—not only the time to generate an output.
  • What information could be exposed? Define how the workflow handles NDA-covered and other confidential material, especially when personal accounts are involved.
  • Who can approve the result? Match review responsibility to the relevant technical, artistic, or production standards.
  • Can another person repeat the workflow? Document the process and ownership rather than relying on one employee’s tacit knowledge.
  • What support work might follow? Account for questions about acceptable use, job-security anxiety, and any review burden shifted to HR, legal, or other teams.

What the summit accounts establish—and what they do not

Lewis Packwood’s GamesIndustry.biz report covered a London HR summit held on October 1, 2026, and published October 2. The event operated under the Chatham House Rule, and the report quotes attendees anonymously rather than naming them or assigning specific job titles. Its examples are useful for understanding ways AI can shift work into governance, quality control, rework, and staff support, but they are not a representative survey or a measured productivity study.

That distinction matters: task-level acceleration and increased work elsewhere can coexist. The examples explain how that can happen, but do not prove that AI universally increases workload or show how common these outcomes are among games companies.
