In Quordle’s basic format, you solve four hidden five-letter words using nine guesses total. Each valid guess is entered once and appears on all four boards, but every board evaluates it against a different answer. Read the colors on each grid separately: they show which letters fit that board’s word and where.
How a Quordle turn works
- Enter a valid five-letter word.
- Submit it with Enter. The game applies the same guess to all four grids and uses one turn from the shared guess budget.
- Read the color feedback on each grid, then use those clues to shape your next guess. Use Backspace to edit an unsubmitted entry.
The basic rules pages describe four hidden words and nine total guesses to solve them all. You do not get nine guesses per board; every submitted word advances all four boards at once. Quordle.me’s rules and gameplay description and Quordle.game’s rules guide explain this shared-turn format.
What the colors mean
- Green: the letter is in the answer and in the correct position on that grid.
- Yellow: the letter appears in that grid’s answer, but in a different position.
- Gray: the letter does not appear in that grid’s answer.
These clues belong to individual boards, not to the guess as a whole. For example, in an illustrative puzzle, a guessed letter could be green on one grid and gray on another because the four answers are different. The on-screen keyboard may also show separate indicators for the boards, helping you track which grids support a letter.
How to use four grids without mixing up their clues
After each guess, treat every board as its own word problem while remembering that your next word will be tested on all four. A green letter fixes a position on the board where it appears; a yellow letter rules out its current position there; gray rules the letter out for that answer. A clue on one grid does not transfer automatically to another.

For instance, if a letter is yellow on the upper-left board but gray on the lower-right board, the next guess should place that letter somewhere else in the upper-left answer while excluding it from the lower-right answer. This is why checking all four grids after every turn matters: one guess can narrow several answers at once, but it can also reveal different information on each.
How Quordle differs from Wordle
The cited comparison describes Wordle as one five-letter answer in six attempts, while Quordle’s basic format uses four answers in nine shared attempts. The key difference is not simply the larger number of words: Quordle returns four sets of feedback for every submitted guess, so you are balancing four evolving patterns with one turn budget. Do all Quordle modes use nine guesses?
No. The nine-guess rule describes the basic or Classic format in the cited rules pages, not necessarily every mode. A secondary report describes a selector with Classic, Extreme, and Chill modes, plus a weekly challenge; it reports nine guesses for Classic, eight for Extreme, and twelve for Chill. Because mode availability and allowances can change, check the live game’s selector rather than assuming those counts apply everywhere.
