If R.E.P.O. crashes on your Windows PC, start with the quick, reversible checks: restart Windows and Steam, verify the game files, then test without mods or overlays. Update or roll back your graphics driver if the problem began after a driver change. The right fix depends on when the crash happens; a launch failure, a crash after 20 minutes, and a full-PC reboot point to different causes.
This guide is for the Windows Steam version. These eight fixes address common causes, but none is guaranteed to resolve every crash. Avoid undocumented launch commands and don’t disable antivirus protection as a general fix.
Start with the symptom

A game closing to the desktop is different from Windows freezing or the computer restarting. If the entire PC loses power or reboots, investigate system stability and hardware rather than treating it as an ordinary game crash.
Check R.E.P.O.’s PC requirements
Steam lists these requirements for R.E.P.O. as of August 18, 2026. The Steam store page is the source for the current listing.

Meeting the minimum is not a promise of crash-free play. A laptop’s integrated graphics are not automatically equivalent to a desktop GTX 970, and a system near minimum may have less headroom for background tasks, heat or memory use. The listed 1 GB is the game’s storage requirement, not a recommendation to leave Windows with only 1 GB free.
8 fixes for R.E.P.O. crashing on PC
1. Restart Windows and Steam, then finish pending updates
A restart can clear a stuck process or pending update. It won’t repair a damaged file or faulty driver, but it is a quick way to rule out a temporary issue.
- Close R.E.P.O.
- In Steam, select Steam > Exit to close the client fully.
- Restart Windows, reopen Steam and allow any Steam update to finish.
- Check Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates.
- Test R.E.P.O. before opening overlays, recording tools, tuning utilities or a large number of browser tabs.
Steam recommends a fresh restart and updated Windows as part of its game-crash troubleshooting guidance. If the crash returns, move on rather than repeatedly rebooting.

2. Verify the game files in Steam
Verification checks the installed files and can replace missing or damaged game data. It is a sensible early step for a crash at launch or after a game update.
- Open Steam > Library.
- Right-click R.E.P.O. and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, restart Steam and test the game.
Steam’s verification instructions note that the process can take several minutes. A file failing validation does not necessarily mean the check failed: some local configuration files may not be replaced. If Steam repeatedly downloads the same file, check your antivirus quarantine as well (Fix 7).

3. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Graphics-driver faults are one possible cause of a game crash, but an update is not guaranteed to fix one. Download drivers from the manufacturer—not an unofficial driver-updater—and restart Windows after installation.
- Find the GPU under Task Manager > Performance > GPU, or open Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Get the driver from the official page for your GPU: NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.
- Install it, restart Windows and test R.E.P.O.
If the crashing started immediately after a driver update, try the previous stable driver as a diagnostic test instead of assuming the newest version is best. A clean installation may be appropriate if a normal update fails, but treat advanced driver-removal workflows as a later step. Epic’s guidance on GPU crashes recommends checking the GPU maker’s driver; it also notes that crashes can have causes beyond the driver, including memory pressure, timeouts, software and hardware problems.

A mod or overlay can conflict with a game, especially after an update. That doesn’t mean mods or overlays are inherently unsafe or always cause problems; temporarily disabling them is a quick way to test.
- Exit R.E.P.O. and Steam.
- Temporarily disable the mod loader and all installed mods. Back up save files before removing anything that could alter saved data.
- Disable overlays and on-screen tools, such as Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, recording software and ReShade.
- Launch the unmodified game. If it works, re-enable items one at a time to identify a conflict.
Don’t delete arbitrary files from the game folder; follow the mod or loader’s own removal instructions. Steam also recommends disabling non-essential software when troubleshooting conflicts in its crash checklist.
5. Reduce graphics load and remove unstable tuning
If you can reach the game’s menu, reduce the load and test whether stability improves:

- Choose a lower graphics preset and resolution; try windowed or borderless mode.
- Turn off optional post-processing effects and cap the frame rate if the game offers that setting.
- Temporarily return GPU or CPU overclocks and undervolts to default. If you use aggressive memory tuning, test without it too.
- Watch CPU and GPU temperatures while playing, and make sure fans and vents are unobstructed.
Lower settings can help if the problem is tied to resource pressure or system stability, but they won’t fix every crash. Steam notes that resolution, graphics settings, memory and background processes can affect performance in its performance guidance. Don’t apply generic launch commands such as -dx11, -dx12 or -autoconfig without confirmation that R.E.P.O. supports them. Steam says -autoconfig is for Valve/Source games and has no effect on other Steam games: Steam launch-option guidance.
6. Make sure a laptop uses its dedicated GPU
If your laptop has both integrated and dedicated graphics, Windows may not be using the adapter you expect. This setting can improve performance where adapter selection is the issue; it is not a universal crash fix.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add R.E.P.O. if it is not listed, then select the game and choose Options.
- Choose High performance and save.
- Connect the laptop to power, turn off battery-saver or quiet graphics modes for the test, then relaunch.
Windows labels can vary by build and laptop manufacturer. If the setting has no effect, check your NVIDIA or AMD per-game graphics settings too.
7. Check antivirus quarantine and required components
If the game closes immediately, Steam reports a missing executable, or verification keeps redownloading a file, security software may have blocked a game file. Steam lists antivirus quarantine and missing secondary installers among possible launch problems in its file and antivirus guidance and secondary-installer guidance.
- Open Windows Security or your antivirus quarantine/history and look for an R.E.P.O. executable or DLL.
- Restore a blocked file only if it came from the legitimate Steam installation. Then verify the game files again.
- If the game folder needs an antivirus exclusion, add only that folder and only after confirming the files are legitimate. An exclusion reduces protection for that location.
- If the installation folder includes a bundled installer for a required component, run that installer. Do not download individual DLL files from third-party sites.
Do not leave antivirus disabled. Running the game as administrator is not a first-line fix; use it only if you have a specific permissions problem, and don’t make elevated access permanent by default.

8. Collect crash details and contact the developer
If the checks above do not help, record what happens instead of repeating them or immediately reinstalling. Include:
- When the crash occurs: on launch, loading, lobby entry or after a period of play.
- Whether it happens in multiplayer, single-player, or only on a particular map, room, enemy or action.
- Whether mods or overlays are installed, and whether the issue persists with them disabled.
- Your GPU model and driver version, Windows version and R.E.P.O. build shown by Steam.
- The exact error text, and whether only the game closes or Windows freezes or restarts.
- What changed just before the issue began, plus a screenshot or short video if available.
For a crash reporter, include its error details rather than just saying the game “crashes.” An Unreal-style crash window alone does not prove the GPU is at fault. Epic explains that crash reports can contain diagnostic details such as error types and call stacks in its crash-reporting documentation; don’t assume a R.E.P.O.-specific log folder without verified instructions.

- After a game update: test without mods, verify files, restart Steam and check the developer’s Steam announcements or support channels. Reinstalling generally downloads the current build again, so it may not undo an update regression.
- After a driver update: try a clean driver installation or test the prior stable driver; report the exact version if asking for help.
- Only in multiplayer: check that everyone is on the same game version, determine whether the host uses mods, and note whether the crash affects one player or everyone. A network disconnect is not the same as a PC crash.
- After 10–30 minutes: check temperatures, memory pressure, laptop power mode, tuning and background apps. A delayed crash is less suggestive of a simple missing-file problem than an immediate launch failure.
- The entire PC reboots or powers off: stop treating it as a normal game bug. Check temperatures and fans, power connections and supply, RAM stability, and Windows Event Viewer. If other demanding games cause the same issue, seek qualified hardware help. Avoid registry edits intended to change GPU timeout behavior; they are not a safe general player fix.
Reinstalling R.E.P.O. is a last resort after file verification and mod isolation. It is unlikely to fix a driver fault, overheating or unstable hardware, and it may remove useful diagnostic context.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can R.E.P.O. crash even if my PC meets the requirements?
The Steam requirements are a baseline, not a guarantee of stable play. A laptop GPU may differ from a desktop card, and driver faults, heat, background software, mods or unstable tuning can still cause crashes.
Should I verify files or reinstall first?
Verify the game files first; it is quicker and can replace missing or damaged files. Reinstall only after verification and mod isolation, since reinstalling will not usually solve driver or hardware problems.
Can mods cause R.E.P.O. to crash?
Yes. A mod or loader may become incompatible after a game update. Temporarily disable all mods and test the unmodified game, then re-enable them one at a time if it works.

Don’t assume either command is supported by R.E.P.O. The research here does not establish those launch options as valid fixes for this game.
Why does R.E.P.O. crash only on my laptop?
The laptop may be selecting integrated graphics instead of its dedicated GPU, or may be constrained by battery-saving settings, heat or power limits. Try Windows’ High performance graphics preference while plugged in.
Is an Unreal-style crash always a GPU problem?
No. The crash window alone does not identify the cause. Driver, memory, software, operating-system and hardware issues can all be involved.
What if my whole PC restarts while playing?
Treat that as a system-stability issue, not just a game crash. Check temperatures, fans, power, RAM stability and Event Viewer; seek hardware help if other demanding games cause it too.
Where should I report a persistent R.E.P.O. crash?
