The 60-second answer
ragent.dll is an old 32-bit Microsoft Office shared component associated with the Microsoft Office Replication Agent and Office Web Folders. Archived Office installation documentation places it here:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb FoldersRagent.dll
It is not a normal Windows DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or modern Microsoft 365 file. Do not download a replacement from a DLL archive, copy it into System32, or start with regsvr32.
The safest fix is to identify the program producing the error, then repair or reinstall the Office installation that supplied Web Folders. If the file was quarantined, verify its original path and Microsoft signature before considering restoration.

What causes the ragent.dll error?
The filename alone does not identify every Office edition or build that used the file. However, the archived Office file list associates Ragent.dll with the shared Web Folders feature.
The most likely causes are:
- An old Office installation is damaged or incomplete.
- Office Web Folders or another shared Office feature was removed.
- Office was uninstalled incompletely, leaving a shortcut or application that still expects the DLL.
- Disk cleanup or registry-cleaner software removed the file or its installation references.
- Antivirus software quarantined a legitimate copy.
- A mixed or incorrect Office architecture was installed.
- A system image was restored while applications and registry data were left inconsistent.
- A program is looking for a dependency of
ragent.dll, rather than the DLL itself.
The message “The specified module could not be found” is especially important. Windows may have located ragent.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies. Treat the message as a loading failure until you confirm the file is actually absent.
First, identify the program calling the DLL
Before repairing anything, find out which executable is generating the error.
- Write down the complete error text.
- Note whether it appears when Windows starts, when an Office application opens, or when you launch a particular old program.
- Check the title bar and the name of the application mentioned in the message.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing
Win + R, enteringeventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Expand Windows Logs, select Application, and look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Open the matching event and record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and any path shown.
- In File Explorer, check whether either of these paths exists:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb FoldersRagent.dll
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb FoldersRagent.dll
The archived Office documentation uses the first path. On a 64-bit Windows installation, an older 32-bit Office component may instead be under Program Files (x86).

A 32-bit legacy DLL can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ 32-bit compatibility layer. That does not make it interchangeable with a file from another Office release. Do not substitute a similarly named DLL based only on its filename, reported size, or version.
Fix 1: Repair the associated Office installation
Repair is the primary solution because it restores the file together with the registry entries, shared components, and dependencies that Office expects.
Office 2000
For Office 2000, Microsoft documents this repair route:
Rank #2
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Close all Office programs.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Microsoft Office 2000.
- Click Change/Remove.
- Select Repair Office.
- Choose the option to repair errors in the Office installation.
- Insert the original Office CD or provide the original installation source if requested.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program that produced the error.
Office 2000 also provides Help → Detect and Repair from an Office application. If that application opens, select Help, choose Detect and Repair, and follow the prompts.
Later MSI-based Office installations
The wording varies by release, but the general path is:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the Microsoft Office product.
- Click Change.
- Select Repair.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
Click-to-Run Office
For a Click-to-Run installation:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 installation.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Modify.
- Try Quick Repair first.
- If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the original program.
If repair reports that it cannot find the source files, use the original licensed Office media or official installer. Do not replace the missing file with a copy from another computer.
Fix 2: Reinstall the Office feature or Office itself
If repair completes but the file is still missing, the Web Folders feature may not be installed.
- Open the Office entry in Programs and Features or Installed apps.
- Choose Change or Modify.
- Select the option to add or remove Office features.
- Look for Web Folders, shared Office tools, or a similar shared component.
- Mark the feature for installation from the local computer.
- Continue through Setup.
- Restart Windows and test the calling application.
Feature names differ between Office releases, and an exact option may not be available in every edition. If Setup does not offer Web Folders, uninstall the damaged Office installation and reinstall it from legitimate original media or the product’s official installation channel.
The exact Office release cannot be determined from ragent.dll alone. Do not mix a 32-bit DLL from one Office release with another Office installation.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed the file, especially if the old Office installation is incomplete or the file is located somewhere unexpected.
Rank #3
In Windows Security:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection associated with
ragent.dll. - Inspect the original path, detection name, publisher information, and available signature details.
Restore or allow the file only if it came from the expected Office installation and your security product identifies the detection as a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the device if the file is genuinely malicious.
If the file appeared in a download folder, temporary directory, or other unusual location, do not restore it merely because its name is correct. Run a full malware scan and repair or reinstall Office from trusted media.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They are not the primary repair for an Office-owned DLL, so a successful scan may not restore ragent.dll.
Run them when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates, or several unrelated Windows files reporting corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM should run before SFC because it can repair the Windows component source that SFC uses. If both commands complete successfully but the same Office error remains, return to Office repair rather than repeatedly running the scans.
If you want help identifying damaged Windows components without repeatedly guessing which repair command to run, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Office program remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that installation.

Fix 5: Use System Restore when removal caused the problem
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after disk cleanup, registry-cleaner software, an Office removal, or restoration of an old system image.
- Press
Win + R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, registry data, drivers, and installed programs. It does not replace a proper Office repair, and it is relevant only when a suitable restore point exists. If the cleanup program created its own backup, restoring that backup may be safer than copying an isolated DLL.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing DLL.
There is no verified evidence that this legacy Office component should be manually registered. Running:
regsvr32 ragent.dll
may produce:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That result does not repair Office. If the file is missing, regsvr32 cannot recreate it. If the file exists, registration will not restore its matching Office files or installer configuration.
Why copying or downloading the DLL is unsafe
Do not download ragent.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
That approach can fail because:
- The downloaded file may contain malware.
- It may be from the wrong Office release.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- It may have incompatible dependencies.
- The application may require registry data or other Office files.
- Windows may continue loading the wrong copy.
- The underlying Office installation remains damaged.
The safe sources are the original licensed Office installation media, the Office installation already registered on the computer, or Microsoft’s official installation and repair process. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone download for ragent.dll.
Drivers and Windows Features are usually unrelated
ragent.dll is an application component, not a graphics, audio, network, or chipset driver. Updating a driver in Device Manager will not normally restore it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf another symptom points to a driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX, or .NET solely because ragent.dll is missing. Install those runtimes only when dependency analysis or the calling application specifically identifies one as missing.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
Manually checking every device for outdated drivers is slow and can involve guessing among multiple packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; its free scan identifies them, while installation is handled by the full version. That does not replace repairing the Office installation that supplied ragent.dll.
If repair still fails
Collect these details before trying another fix:
- The exact error message.
- The executable or application that displays it.
- Your Windows version.
- Your Office version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The full path where Windows expects or finds
ragent.dll. - The matching Event Viewer details.
- Whether the problem began after uninstalling Office, removing Web Folders, cleanup software, quarantine, or a system restore.
If only one Windows account is affected, test the same application from another account. A damaged user profile or per-user Office configuration can resemble a missing-file problem.
If the original Office CD or installation source is unavailable, do not use a DLL archive as a substitute. Remove the incomplete installation if appropriate and install a supported Office product from Microsoft or use another legitimate application source.

Is ragent.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the old Microsoft Office Replication Agent and Office Web Folders, not with the normal Windows system component store.
Which Office version installed it?
Archived Microsoft documentation lists the file in an Office 2000 file set. The filename alone cannot prove which edition installed a particular copy, and it should not be assumed that every Office 2000 edition contained it.
Why is it usually 32-bit?
This is a legacy x86 Office component. A 32-bit Office DLL can run on 64-bit Windows, but it must come from the matching Office installation and directory structure.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Usually no. Those packages are not the normal source of this Office component. Repair Office first.
Should I restore a quarantined copy?
Only after checking its original path, provenance, signature, and the security product’s detection. If the source is uncertain, scan the computer and reinstall Office from trusted media instead.
What if the message names an old non-Office program?
Repair the named program first. It may expect its own copy or may be launching an old Office integration component. Record its executable path before changing files.
Can SFC restore ragent.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs Windows components, while ragent.dll belongs to a legacy Office installation. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, not as a substitute for Office repair.
