Reports describe a 12-core, 24-thread Zen 3 CPU for the AM4 platform with 128MB of L3 cache—but this is an observation of a development sample, not a retail product or a validated AMD specification.
What is the Ryzen 9 5900X3D engineering sample?
It is a reported, unreleased processor sample that appears to pair the Ryzen 9 5900X’s 12-core, 24-thread configuration with AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. Digital Citizen and VideoCardz describe it as a Zen 3 chip for AM4, but the reported specifications should not be treated as a finalized product spec. Digital Citizen and VideoCardz reported the appearance and configuration.
Why does it reportedly have 128MB of L3 cache?
The reported layout puts 96MB of L3 cache on one chiplet (CCD) and 32MB on the other, for 128MB total. The 96MB side is described as 32MB of standard CCD cache plus a 64MB 3D V-Cache die. The other CCD appears not to have stacked cache. That one-CCD arrangement accounts for the total; it is not a 192MB design with V-Cache on both CCDs.
Earlier Zen 3 X3D demonstrations were associated with cache on both CCDs, making this reported sample’s asymmetric layout notable. The available reports describe what appears on the sample; they do not establish AMD’s intended final configuration or why the company did not release it.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Content Creation and Game Performance
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 72 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- Cooler not included
What clock speeds have been reported?
Digital Citizen reported a CPU-Z reading of about 4.65GHz and a reading of approximately 4.73GHz from another monitoring utility. These are observations from a rare engineering sample, not a validated boost-clock specification. They also do not show sustained performance or establish how the chip would behave in a finished retail system.
Did AMD ever sell a Ryzen 9 5900X3D?
No. The 5900X3D was never released as a normal retail desktop processor. AMD’s publicly sold AM4 X3D lineup used other Ryzen models, so this sample is evidence of development experimentation rather than a CPU consumers can buy. The reports do not establish a retail price or verified provenance for this particular sample.
Rank #2
- The world's best gaming desktop processor, with 12 cores and 24 processing threads
- Can deliver elite 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended. Max Temperature- 90°C
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 70 MB of cache, DDR-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
Is this sample faster than a Ryzen 9 5900X or Ryzen 7 5800X3D?
That cannot be established from the reported information. No reproducible performance testing for this exact sample was reported. Its cache layout and monitoring readings alone are not enough to determine how it performs in games or applications, or how it would compare with either retail processor.
