A Raspberry Pi 5 24/7 YouTube streaming setup is a reasonable starting project, but budget roughly ₹7,000–₹10,000 for the Pi, suitable power, a case or cooling, and boot storage. That is a planning range, not a guaranteed current checkout total: Indian retailer listings vary, and the storage price and a complete itemized bill were not verified. Electricity, broadband, backup power, and the time spent recovering a failed stream are separate costs.
How much does a Raspberry Pi 24/7 YouTube stream cost in India?
For a Pi 5 build, use ₹7,000–₹10,000 as an initial planning range for the computer and basic essentials. Robu.in search listings accessed in 2026 displayed a Pi 5 4GB board at ₹5,799, while a separate starter-kit listing showed ₹8,497. The same retailer snapshot listed an official 27W USB-C supply for ₹1,094, an active cooler for ₹465, and a case for ₹819. These are listing snapshots, not promised prices; check the seller’s current total and the kit’s contents before ordering. Robu.in
The range is not a complete, fixed bill of materials. Boot storage was not separately priced, and a starter kit may already include some accessories. It also excludes a camera, microphone, display, router, UPS, and paid streaming software. Verify that your chosen build includes a microSD card or other boot storage, appropriate USB-C power, and a suitable case or cooling arrangement.
Separate the one-time and recurring costs
| Cost | How to budget it |
|---|---|
| Pi, power, case/cooling, boot storage | About ₹7,000–₹10,000 is a derived planning range for a Pi 5 build; actual contents and checkout prices vary. |
| Electricity | Measure the complete setup at the wall while streaming, then calculate using your local tariff. |
| Broadband | Use the cost of your own plan. No India-wide plan price or single tariff is assumed here. |
| Backup power and reliability | Budget separately if outages matter. A Pi alone does not guarantee that an unattended stream will recover. |
What does continuous operation cost in electricity?
Raspberry Pi documentation lists 800mA as typical active current consumption for a bare Pi 5 board, but that figure is not a wall-power measurement for a streaming setup. Workload, connected devices, and the power supply affect what the full system draws. Measure your own setup with a plug-in power meter while the actual stream is running.

Use this formula for a 30-day estimate:
Measured watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 × your ₹/kWh tariff = monthly electricity cost
For illustration only, a measured 5W at ₹8/kWh would use 3.6 kWh over 30 days and cost ₹28.80. Both inputs are hypothetical examples, not a test result or a national Indian electricity rate. Your broadband bill is additional unless the connection is already paid for and you would keep it regardless.

What parts and power supply does a Pi 5 need?
Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C power supply for the Pi 5, with a 5V, 5A capability. Its documentation says that using a 3A supply limits downstream USB peripheral power to 600mA. Choose the supply with the attached devices in mind, rather than assuming a phone charger will provide the same headroom. Raspberry Pi computer documentation
- Pi: the cited Indian listing is for the 4GB Pi 5. That does not establish that 4GB is enough for every encoder, scene layout, or software stack.
- Boot storage: include a compatible microSD card or other supported boot device; its price was not independently established in the retailer snapshots.
- Case and cooling: use an arrangement appropriate for a machine that will run continuously. Confirm whether a kit already includes cooling or a case.
- Network: wired Ethernet is a practical choice where available for a continuously uploading device, but it is not a guarantee against connection outages.
- Power continuity: consider what happens during a household power cut or router restart. A UPS adds cost and still needs to be tested with the complete setup.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Select a supported bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you actually use; do not treat a single upload-speed figure as suitable for every stream. For example, YouTube’s guidance for 720p at 30 fps gives 2 Mbps minimum, 6 Mbps maximum, and 3 Mbps recommended. YouTube Help: encoder settings

- Choose the stream format. Select the supported video codec and a resolution/frame-rate combination your Pi and encoding software can sustain. Start conservatively if you have not tested the workload.
- Set bitrate and keyframes. Use CBR, apply YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes that option.
- Create or open the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. The exact screen labels can change.
- Copy the connection details. Put YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. Prefer RTMPS when it is supported, as YouTube recommends the secure extension to RTMP.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or expose it in shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Test before relying on it. Run the real camera or scene and intended settings for an extended trial. Check temperature, dropped frames, upload stability, restart behavior, and what happens after a disconnect. No cited documentation establishes unattended uptime for a particular Pi/software combination.
YouTube Help: set up a live stream with an encoder
Where the Pi’s limits and 24/7 risks show up
A continuous stream is not just an encoding task: it is a long-running chain of power, network, software, encoder, and YouTube ingest. A configuration that works for a short test may still fail after an update, temperature rise, router restart, or temporary loss of internet. Neither the cited Pi specifications nor YouTube’s encoder guidance guarantees a particular build’s unattended reliability.
- Encoding load: complicated overlays, multiple sources, high frame rates, or demanding codec settings may exceed what your chosen Pi and software can sustain. Test the exact scene and settings rather than extrapolating from a bare-board spec.
- Upload headroom: the encoder bitrate is only the video stream’s demand. Leave room for network variation and other household traffic; a speed test is a snapshot, not a continuity guarantee.
- Power and cooling: a weak supply, peripheral load, heat, or a household outage can interrupt service. Confirm that your power and cooling choices suit the actual setup.
- Recovery: decide in advance whether the encoder restarts after a reboot and how you will respond if YouTube drops the ingest. Do not assume automatic recovery unless you have confirmed the behavior in your software and tested it.
- Content rights: having a working encoder does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material being streamed. Use content you own or are licensed to broadcast and review YouTube’s applicable policies before leaving a stream running.
DIY Pi versus a cloud service
A Pi trades a one-time hardware purchase and local electricity for hands-on maintenance: you own the device and can reuse it for other tasks, but your home power and internet, encoding workload, and recovery plan all matter. A hosted service trades local hardware and its power draw for a recurring service charge and dependence on the provider and network. Compare the options on upfront spend, monthly electricity and broadband, the resolution and scene complexity you need, recovery effort, and whether the hardware has other uses.
