Raspberry Pi 5 vs. Cloud VM: Monthly Cost for a 24/7 YouTube Video Loop

A fair Raspberry Pi 5 vs cloud VM cost comparison depends on the playback architecture. See what to measure and include before estimating a 24/7 monthly bill.

There is no reliable single monthly-cost winner without specifying what the setup does, what it includes, and where it runs. A Raspberry Pi 5’s cost is electricity for the complete setup plus the board and accessories; a cloud VM’s cost is compute plus storage and network transfer. The VM may also need to send its output to a local screen—or may serve video to another device—so it is not automatically a replacement for a Pi connected to a display.

First define what “the loop” is supposed to do

A Pi connected to a screen and playing YouTube in a browser is a local playback setup. A cloud VM is a remote computer: its role could be to host a video file, run a remotely rendered desktop whose output is viewed locally, or control playback elsewhere. Those architectures have different network, storage, and display requirements. Compare like with like before comparing bills.

  • Local playback: the Pi, screen, network equipment, and any other peripherals remain at the viewing location.
  • Cloud-hosted media: the VM stores or serves video, but a separate local device still has to display it. Transfer and the receiving device matter.
  • Remote desktop or streamed output: the VM renders a desktop or playback session, and a client at the viewing location receives its output. The client and network are part of the setup.
  • YouTube live stream: if the goal is to keep a pre-recorded video running as a YouTube live stream, that is a different job from displaying YouTube playback on a local screen. A VM configured for that purpose must be sized and priced for its actual streaming architecture.

For a 24/7 month, use the same operating assumption on both sides: for example, 24 hours × 30 days = 720 hours. That is a comparison convention, not a guarantee that a particular plan or device will run without interruption.

What to count for a Raspberry Pi 5

Initial purchase and setup

Raspberry Pi announced Pi 5 on September 28, 2023, with a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, VideoCore VII GPU, dual 4Kp60 HDMI output, 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, and dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi. These specifications provide capability context, not a measured YouTube playback bill. The launch prices were $60 for the 4GB model and $80 for the 8GB model, before local taxes; those are 2023 launch prices, not current street prices. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 announcement

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Include the actual costs of the board, storage, case, cables, power supply, and any other required setup parts. Raspberry Pi recommends its 27W USB-C supply for Pi 5; check whether the supply and other essentials are already included in a kit before treating a kit’s price as the complete setup cost. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation

To express purchase cost as part of a monthly comparison, choose an ownership period and state it. For example, if you choose 36 months, divide the one-time hardware and setup cost by 36. That is an accounting assumption, not a prediction of useful life or resale value.

Measure the whole setup’s electricity

Measure wall power while the Pi is doing the intended job: use the intended screen resolution, browser or player, network connection, peripherals, and display. The display can materially affect the total, so a bare-board figure is not the loop’s full energy use.

Raspberry Pi documentation reports 800mA typical bare-board active current for Pi 5 and cautions that actual draw depends on peripherals. Current alone is not a playback-power measurement: converting it to watts requires a voltage and defined measurement conditions. The documentation’s H.264 playback table concerns older Pi models, not Pi 5, and therefore does not establish a Pi 5 YouTube playback average. Raspberry Pi’s approximately 12W figure for Pi 5 describes peak power under particularly intensive workloads, not a 24/7 video-loop average. Use your local electricity rate and the measured draw for your own setup. Do not substitute the Pi’s supply rating or the intensive-workload peak figure for that measurement.

What to count for a cloud VM

Compute is only one line of the bill

Choose a provider, region, VM type, operating system, and output architecture, then price the expected 720-hour month. Add persistent storage and network transfer, along with any other services your architecture needs. If the VM sends video to a local client, account for the client and the data path; if it only hosts media or controls playback, identify which other device displays the video.

Amazon Lightsail says its instance plans are billed hourly up to a maximum monthly cost. Its official bundle page lists a $5/month Linux Nano plan with 0.5GB memory and a $24/month Linux plan with 2 vCPUs, 4GB memory, and a 4TB transfer allowance. These are example plan prices, not proof that either plan can run a particular video-loop architecture. Confirm current pricing, region, how transfer is treated, and workload suitability before using a plan in a budget. AWS Lightsail pricing

Google Cloud’s displayed on-demand rates, accessed in 2026, list f1-micro at $0.0076/hour and g1-small at $0.0257/hour. These are compute rates, not full monthly totals; storage and networking can add costs. Verify the selected region and current rates in Google Cloud’s pricing information before estimating a bill. Google Cloud VM instance pricing

Published figures are reference points, not an apples-to-apples bill

Cost item Raspberry Pi 5 setup Cloud VM setup
Up-front cost Board and setup parts; Pi 5 launch prices were $60 (4GB) and $80 (8GB) before local taxes in 2023, not current street prices. Raspberry Pi Not stated as a general amount; depends on provider, architecture, and any required client or other services.
Monthly compute or power Measure the complete setup at the wall; multiply measured kW by 720 hours and local price per kWh. Provider and plan dependent. Lightsail examples: $5/month for Linux Nano (0.5GB) and $24/month for Linux (2 vCPU, 4GB), as listed on its bundle page. AWS Google Cloud examples: $0.0076/hour for f1-micro and $0.0257/hour for g1-small in its displayed on-demand rate table accessed in 2026; compute only. Google Cloud
Display and viewing path Include the screen and other peripherals in the power measurement. Depends on whether the VM serves media, controls playback, or sends remote output to a local client; the VM does not itself provide a local physical screen.
Storage and transfer Include the storage used in the setup; electricity measurement should reflect the actual peripherals. Price persistent storage and expected network transfer for the selected provider, region, and architecture; these are not included in the cited compute rates.

The figures are not directly interchangeable: the Pi launch prices are historical hardware prices, the Lightsail figures are example monthly bundles, and the Google Cloud figures are hourly compute rates. None alone establishes the complete recurring cost of a working 24/7 loop.

Build a defensible monthly estimate

  1. Write down the viewing architecture. Specify whether playback is directly on a Pi and screen, served from cloud storage to a local player, controlled remotely, or rendered in the cloud and delivered to a client.
  2. Set the comparison window. For a 30-day month at continuous operation, use 720 hours for both sides. State whether taxes are included and keep currency treatment consistent.
  3. Price the Pi setup once. Use current prices available to you for the board and required accessories. Keep purchase cost separate, or amortize it over an explicitly chosen ownership period.
  4. Measure Pi electricity at the wall. Run the intended content and configuration, including the display and peripherals, and multiply the measured kW by 720 and your local kWh rate.
  5. Select and price the cloud architecture. Choose provider, region, VM, operating system, storage, and delivery method. Use the provider’s current calculator or price page, and include compute, storage, transfer, and necessary supporting services.
  6. Compare the complete totals and practical trade-offs. Include the local screen/client and its costs wherever required. Treat maintenance and reliability as considerations for your setup, not as measured advantages established by the prices above.

Which option costs less?

The available published reference prices do not support a universal winner. A Pi estimate needs your purchase costs, measured full-setup power, local electricity rate, and any chosen amortization period. A cloud estimate needs a sized instance in a named region, storage, network transfer, and a clear account of how the output reaches the viewer. Once those inputs are set, the formulas above can produce a useful comparison for your situation; without them, a single monthly figure would imply precision the evidence does not provide.
