A Raspberry Pi 5 can send a live video feed to YouTube, but the right parts depend on your camera or video source, and the internet requirement depends on the encoder bitrate you choose. Start with a Pi 5, a suitable USB-C power supply, a microSD card of at least 32 GB, a compatible video source and a measured, stable upload connection. For YouTube’s listed H.264 settings, plan around 8 Mbps for 720p, 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60—and test the complete setup at the location where you will stream.

Parts needed for a Raspberry Pi 5 YouTube livestream

The basic build has five parts: the Pi, power, boot storage, a video source and network access. Add a display and input devices for desktop setup, or use another computer and a network connection for a headless setup.

Part What to choose What is established
Raspberry Pi 5 Choose a RAM variant that suits the rest of your workflow. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide lists 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB variants, but does not prescribe one for this streaming workload. Raspberry Pi getting-started guide
USB-C power supply Use a supply that meets the manufacturer’s stated baseline; Raspberry Pi recommends its official supply. The setup guide specifies at least 3.0 A for Pi 4 and Pi 5. That is a setup baseline, not a guarantee for every combination of connected peripherals. Raspberry Pi getting-started guide
microSD card Use a card with at least 32 GB capacity for the operating system and files. The setup guide gives the capacity minimum; it does not compare card speed or endurance. Raspberry Pi getting-started guide
Camera or other video source Pick a source supported by the capture software and connection path you intend to use. A Raspberry Pi Camera Module, USB camera, capture device or video file may suit different workflows; no one camera model is required by the available setup guidance. Raspberry Pi documents camera capture and encoding paths. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation
Network connection Use Wi-Fi or connect Ethernet if a cable to your router is practical. Raspberry Pi documents Ethernet as an optional wired connection. Ethernet can simplify the local link, but does not increase your ISP’s upstream capacity or guarantee service continuity. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation
Setup peripherals For desktop setup, prepare a display and input peripherals. For headless setup, use another computer and a network connection. These are the setup paths described in Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance. Raspberry Pi getting-started guide
Case (optional) Consider one to protect the board from damage or short circuits, especially on a metal surface. Raspberry Pi’s guidance does not establish a particular case as a cooling solution. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation

How much upload speed YouTube Live needs

Use YouTube’s encoder bitrate recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you plan to send. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not a guarantee that a particular Indian internet plan will sustain a stream.

Output profile YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps

These are video bitrate values. Your upload connection also needs room for audio and bitrate variation, so do not treat a speed-test result equal to the listed video bitrate as sufficient headroom. YouTube does not name a universal minimum plan speed or Indian ISP for this setup. Test upload capacity where the Pi will sit and at a time representative of the event.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a starting resolution from your connection

  • If upload performance is uncertain, begin with 720p30 and the corresponding YouTube H.264 recommendation, then test for stability.
  • Move to 1080p30 only if both your measured connection and a realistic stream test support it.
  • Use 1080p60 only after testing the exact source, frame rate and encoder settings; its listed H.264 video bitrate is higher than 1080p30.

For encoder setup, YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 as video codec options, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio; stereo AAC/MP3 guidance is 128 Kbps. Match the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to the source and encoder you are actually using. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current table and full settings.

Camera, encoding and performance limits

Choose the camera or source based on its connector, capture-software compatibility, audio needs and intended output profile. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes capture and encoding workflows, including a Pi 5 low-latency option with a coding-efficiency trade-off, and its streaming documentation shows a software x264enc pipeline for Pi 5. These paths do not establish a guaranteed performance level for every camera, resolution, frame rate or cooling arrangement.

In particular, the Pi 5 launch announcement describes a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. Decoding video is not the same as encoding a live outgoing stream, so that specification alone does not demonstrate 4K live-encoding capability. Validate the exact workload before relying on a high-resolution or high-frame-rate stream. Raspberry Pi’s relevant documentation: Pi 5 announcement, camera software documentation and streaming video documentation.

Set up and test before the event

  1. Assemble the basics: install the operating system on a microSD card of at least 32 GB, connect the Pi 5 to suitable USB-C power, and attach the video source and network connection.
  2. Confirm the capture path: check that your chosen camera or other source is recognized by the software you plan to use, and verify audio as well as picture.
  3. Measure upload at the Pi’s location: run a speed test on the intended connection and at a representative time. Choose an output profile whose video bitrate leaves headroom for audio and variation.
  4. Configure the encoder: use YouTube’s current recommended settings for the selected codec and profile. For the documented general settings, use RTMPS, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds); set audio and bitrate appropriately.
  5. Run a realistic test stream: include movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing with representative audio and motion before starting the live stream.
  6. Watch stream health: check YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. If the feed stutters or drops frames, lower the resolution or frame rate, reduce bitrate in line with YouTube’s current guidance, and test again.

YouTube’s instructions and settings are on its live encoder settings page. Settings guidance can change, so check the live table when configuring your encoder.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • Stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: the selected bitrate may be too demanding for the connection’s actual upload performance. Test again at the streaming location, lower the profile or bitrate, and repeat the representative-content test.
  • Wi-Fi drops or varies: check signal and local network stability where the Pi is installed. If practical, try Ethernet; this only changes the local connection and cannot fix inadequate ISP upload or an upstream outage.
  • Video source is missing: check the physical connection and whether the selected camera or capture software supports that input path. The setup guidance does not designate a universal camera model.
  • Power-related problems appear after adding peripherals: recheck the power supply against Raspberry Pi’s 3.0 A minimum for Pi 5 and account for the connected devices; the baseline is not a guarantee for every peripheral combination.
  • High-resolution output cannot be sustained: do not infer live encoding performance from the Pi 5’s 4Kp60 HEVC decoder specification. Test the exact source, software, resolution and frame rate, then choose a profile the system can hold reliably.

Copyright and YouTube live rules

Use only video and audio you have the rights or permission to stream. A successful technical test does not establish that the material is cleared for broadcast. Review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and any rights-holder restrictions that apply to your content before going live; technical encoder guidance does not resolve copyright or reused-content questions.
