Raspberry Pi YouTube Stream Keeps Restarting? Check the systemd Service

Repeated systemd restarts point to a process exit, not necessarily a systemd fault. Use the journal to find the cause, correct the unit, and check YouTube broadcast health separately.

If a YouTube stream running on a Raspberry Pi keeps stopping and starting, the restart messages are a symptom—not the cause. Check the service’s status and journal first, find the process’s exit reason, then fix the command or runtime issue the logs identify. Afterward, verify the broadcast separately in YouTube Live Control Room: a running systemd service does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving usable video and audio.

1. Capture the failure before changing the service

Use the unit’s real name in place of youtube-stream.service if yours is different. These commands show the service state and recent messages from the current boot:

sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -b -n 100 --no-pager

Read the journal around the first failure in each cycle, not just the most recent “Started” message. Look for an exit status, signal, timeout, missing file, permission error, rejected argument, or encoder/network message. Record the exact error before editing anything. Raspberry Pi’s Connect troubleshooting documentation uses the same status-and-journal approach for its own services; the commands are general systemd diagnostics, not a diagnosis specific to YouTube streaming.

If you need more context than the last 100 entries, rerun the journal command without -n 100. Do not paste a stream key, a full environment file, or other credentials into a public forum or an untrusted log-sharing service.

2. Check the unit systemd is actually running

Inspect the effective unit configuration rather than relying on a remembered command or a shell alias:

systemctl cat youtube-stream.service

Check these fields and references against the files and account on the Pi:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • ExecStart: executable, script path, arguments, and media or capture-source paths.
  • User: the account running the process. Confirm that it can read the input and execute the program.
  • WorkingDirectory: the directory from which relative paths are resolved.
  • EnvironmentFile and Environment: required values are available to the service, and any referenced file is readable by the service account.

A command that works in an SSH shell can fail under systemd because the service may run as another user, start in another directory, or lack interactive-shell environment variables. Compare the unit’s exact command and context with the failing log. If testing the encoder manually, use the same service account and paths where practical; keep the stream key private and avoid putting it in a command line that may be visible to other local users.

3. Match the log to the likely cause

These are possibilities to check, not conclusions about your particular Pi. Let the recorded error determine which branch applies.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Executable or script not found: verify the absolute path in ExecStart, that the file exists, and that a script has execute permission and a valid interpreter line.
  • Permission denied: check the service’s User, directory traversal permissions, file readability, and access to the media or capture device. Do not solve this by making private files or credentials world-readable.
  • Missing input or wrong working directory: use an absolute media path or correct WorkingDirectory; check that the file, camera, or other configured source is present and accessible when the service starts.
  • Invalid option or configuration: compare the logged argument error with the encoder’s accepted options and the command actually in ExecStart. A typo or option supported by a different encoder build can cause immediate exits.
  • Missing environment value: confirm that the unit loads the intended environment file and that the service account can read it. Do not print secrets into diagnostic output.
  • Network or ingest error: distinguish a process crash from a connection failure. Check the Pi’s connectivity, the configured YouTube ingest destination, and whether the stream key is current, without disclosing the key.
  • Timeout or signal: note which timeout or termination is reported and what initiated it. A timeout, external stop, and encoder exit are different events; do not change restart behavior until you know which one occurred.

4. Decide whether the restart policy matches the job

The systemd Restart= setting controls what happens after the service process exits; it does not repair a bad command, missing input, or failed connection. The systemd service manual defines Restart=no as the default, Restart=on-failure as restarting on defined failures, and Restart=always as restarting after clean exits as well as failures.

Setting What it does When to consider it
Restart=no Does not restart the service after it exits; this is the default. When systemd should leave restarts to an operator or another mechanism.
Restart=on-failure Restarts for defined failure conditions, rather than after every clean exit. Often easier to reason about for an encoder intended to keep running, once its failure cause is understood.
Restart=always Restarts after clean exits as well as failures, signals, or timeouts. Only when a clean exit should also cause the process to start again.

For a long-running stream, a clean exit may still mean the encoder finished or was deliberately stopped. With always, systemd will launch it again in that case, which can look like a restart loop even though the process exited successfully. Conversely, choosing on-failure does not make an invalid command work. A setting such as RestartSec= can space out retry attempts when that is appropriate, but it cannot fix a persistent error.

5. Apply a unit change and verify the fresh result

  1. Edit the actual unit or its intended override, correcting only the cause supported by the logs.
  2. Tell systemd to reload unit configuration, then restart the service:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service
  1. Inspect the new service state and journal rather than assuming the edit worked:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -b -n 100 --no-pager

If systemd reports that the service has hit a start-rate limit, treat that as evidence of repeated unsuccessful starts, not as a fix or proof that systemd is broken. Read the failure messages and the unit’s configured start limits, correct the underlying fault, and only then consider clearing a failed state if needed. A reset alone merely permits another attempt.

6. Confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast

Check the encoder’s own output for successful input and output, then check the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room. A unit can be reported as active while the encoder has no usable media source, is sending an invalid stream, or cannot connect to the intended ingest. Treat these as two separate checks:

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to loop uploaded recordings on YouTube rather than keep a Pi and local connection running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “active (running)” in systemctl mean the YouTube stream is live?

No. It describes the service process. Confirm encoder output and the incoming stream status in YouTube Live Control Room as separate checks.

Should I set Restart=always to stop the stream from going offline?

Not automatically. It restarts after clean exits as well as failures, so first establish why the process exits and whether a clean exit should trigger another run.
