Razer’s Barracuda X Chroma adds six-zone Chroma RGB lighting, but it is a separate headset—not a software update for the original Barracuda X or Barracuda X (2022). Launched October 24, 2024, it also brings Bluetooth and SmartSwitch, a longer manufacturer-rated battery life, and an updated detachable microphone. Razer’s U.S. store lists it at $129.99.
It’s new hardware, not an RGB update
The Barracuda X Chroma has its own product listing and built-in illuminated earcups. Older Barracuda X headsets lack the LEDs required for Chroma lighting, so installing Synapse or updating firmware cannot add it. Razer maintains separate support pages for the 2021 Barracuda X and Barracuda X (2022); check the product code or features when a retailer listing leaves the year out.

The 2021 model’s price, battery rating and wireless details come from Razer’s original announcement. The Chroma specifications come from its 2024 announcement and Razer’s product details. The Chroma model is 35g heavier than the original. The available official figures do not establish a like-for-like 2022 comparison, so do not assume every specification changed in the same way between generations.

What the RGB does—and what it doesn’t
Razer describes six-zone lighting on the earcups, with 16.8 million color options and synchronization with more than 300 games. Lighting can be customized through Razer Chroma Studio on desktop and the Razer Audio App on mobile; game effects depend on the title, software and platform. These are visual customization features, not evidence of better audio or lower wireless latency.
Razer’s materials establish lighting customization but do not provide a verified RGB-on battery runtime or a precise lighting-off shortcut here. Actual battery life can vary with lighting, wireless mode, volume, microphone use and other conditions; treat “up to 70 hours” as a manufacturer maximum, not a guaranteed everyday result. Do not expect identical lighting controls across desktop, mobile and console use.

Wireless modes and platform compatibility
The included USB-C dongle provides 2.4GHz Razer HyperSpeed Wireless, while Bluetooth supports compatible phones, tablets, laptops and other devices. SmartSwitch lets users switch between the two wireless sources. That source switching should not be mistaken for a promise of independently mixed simultaneous audio.

Battery, charging and fit
Razer rates the Chroma model for up to 70 hours and says a 15-minute charge can provide about six hours of use; its Canadian product FAQ gives an approximately four-hour full-charge time. These are manufacturer figures, and Razer does not specify a single test configuration in the cited materials that would make them a promise for every RGB and wireless setting. The 2021 Barracuda X was rated for up to 20 hours, making battery capacity a more practical upgrade than lighting for some buyers.
The Chroma weighs 285g. Razer describes swiveling earcups, breathable memory-foam cushions and a padded headband for portable, extended use. Those design details do not establish how comfortable the fit will be for a particular head shape, glasses wearer or long session; try the fit if comfort is the deciding factor. A detachable microphone is useful when you want a less conspicuous setup, but the RGB may still be more noticeable in public than an unlit headset.

Which software to use
For desktop controls, use Razer Synapse 4, not Synapse 3. Razer’s product FAQ directs Chroma users to Synapse 4, while the Barracuda X Chroma Master Guide specifies Windows 10 or later and an internet connection for Synapse installation. The Razer Audio App requires iOS 12 or later or Android 8.1 Oreo or later, with internet access for installation. The two apps need not offer identical controls.
Desktop setup
- Install Synapse 4 on a Windows 10-or-newer PC.
- Connect the headset with its USB-C wireless dongle or another compatible USB connection.
- Open the headset’s device page in Synapse 4 and choose the available lighting and device settings.
- Test the chosen settings in the connection mode you plan to use; feature availability may differ by mode.
Mobile app and Bluetooth pairing
- Install the Razer Audio App on a compatible iOS or Android device.
- Turn on the headset and hold the SmartSwitch button for seven seconds to enter Bluetooth pairing mode; Razer says the indicator should flash blue.
- Select the headset in the device’s Bluetooth menu, then open it in the Audio App to adjust supported settings.
- If it does not appear, remove an old pairing from the device and repeat the pairing steps.

Fixing common software and pairing problems
The headset does not appear in Synapse
- Confirm the headset is the Chroma model; the older Barracuda X and Barracuda X (2022) have separate support guidance.
- Check that you installed Synapse 4 rather than Synapse 3.
- Connect the USB-C dongle directly to the computer, avoiding a hub or adapter if possible, then restart Synapse and reconnect.
- Try another USB port and check Razer’s current support page for model-specific firmware or pairing utilities.
Razer’s support pages for the older models state they are not supported in Synapse: Barracuda X support · Barracuda X (2022) support. Do not apply older-model instructions to the Chroma model—or the reverse.
RGB controls are missing
Check that Synapse 4 is running, the headset is detected over USB or the dongle, and the Chroma controls are available for that connection mode. Use Razer’s own software rather than assuming third-party lighting utilities are compatible. The cited documentation does not establish a universal button shortcut for disabling the lights.
Is the Barracuda X Chroma worth buying?
It makes sense if you want the whole feature set
- You want earcup RGB and already use Razer Chroma devices or compatible game effects.
- You switch between a gaming device using 2.4GHz and a phone or other Bluetooth device.
- You value Razer’s higher battery-life rating and detachable updated microphone.
- You can use Synapse 4 on Windows or configure supported features with the mobile app.
An older Barracuda X may be better value
If lighting, the Chroma model’s battery rating and its dual-wireless features are not priorities, compare the older Barracuda X or Barracuda X (2022), especially if discounted. The original launched at $99.99, but that historical MSRP is not a current price; availability and discounts depend on the retailer. Older support pages also make clear that the models have distinct software support.
Check compatibility before buying for Xbox
Razer’s retrieved product listings do not clearly establish full Xbox wireless compatibility for this model. Confirm the exact console and intended connection method before purchase rather than relying on broad “multi-platform” wording or a listing for another Barracuda headset.
What the price does—and doesn’t—buy
At Razer’s listed U.S. price of $129.99, the case for the Chroma is not lighting alone: Bluetooth and SmartSwitch, the longer rated battery life and the updated microphone are also part of the package. RGB itself does not demonstrate better sound, and the official specifications cited here do not list active noise cancellation. If you would leave the lights off and do not need the newer wireless features, paying the premium over a discounted older model is harder to justify.
