For most iPhone owners who want a compact controller they can carry anywhere, choose the Backbone One USB-C 2nd Gen. It weighs about half as much as the Razer Kishi Ultra, costs less at list price, and adds a 3.5 mm headset jack and pass-through charging. Choose the Kishi Ultra if you prefer a larger, more traditional grip, play for long sessions, use an iPad mini or Android phone, or want its haptics and RGB lighting. If your iPhone has a Lightning port, neither USB-C model is right: get the Backbone One Lightning 2nd Gen instead.

Dimensions can be reported differently depending on whether a telescopic controller is open or collapsed. The clearest practical distinction is that the Backbone is smaller and lighter to carry, while the Kishi Ultra is substantially larger and accommodates an iPad mini. Comfort and controls: grip size is the real dividing line
The Kishi Ultra’s wider body is its main ergonomic argument. If compact phone controllers make your hands feel cramped, its fuller grip is likely the more appealing shape, especially for extended sessions or console-style games that rely on frequent stick and trigger input. Razer markets it as a full-size-style controller and adds Sensa HD haptics and Chroma RGB lighting. Those features make it feel more feature-rich on paper, but haptic effects depend on the game, app, and platform; they should not be assumed to work identically in every iPhone title.

The Backbone’s smaller body is easier to stow and more convenient for occasional play, but small grips are a trade-off: players with larger hands may find it less comfortable over long sessions. Comfort is personal, and the supplied product specifications do not establish a universal winner. Reviews such as TechRadar’s Kishi Ultra review and GamesRadar’s review offer hands-on impressions if grip feel is a deciding factor.
Both are intended for games played with physical controls. Backbone says its second-generation model has a reshaped D-pad and magnetic adapters; Razer emphasizes a console-style control layout. Look closely at the exact button and stick layout if you mainly play fighters, platformers, retro games, or games with heavy D-pad use. Neither controller can make a touch-only game respond to a gamepad.
Portability, audio and charging
At about 138 g, the Backbone is roughly half the Kishi Ultra’s 266 g. That difference is meaningful if the controller will live in a jacket pocket, small bag, or travel kit. The Kishi Ultra takes up more space, but that bulk is part of what gives it a more substantial grip and broader device fit. Choose based on how you actually play: a controller kept beside the sofa can be larger than one carried every day.

The Backbone has two useful practical advantages: a 3.5 mm headset jack with microphone support and USB-C pass-through charging. Pass-through charging lets you connect power while the phone is installed. These details matter for long sessions, wired headsets, or phones whose owners do not want to rely on wireless audio. Check Razer’s current listing for the exact audio and charging facilities of the version sold in your region rather than assuming the products match.
Compatibility: check the phone connector first
USB-C and Lightning versions are not interchangeable. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, while iPhone 14 and earlier generally use Lightning. Backbone sells both versions; its USB-C 2nd Gen page lists iPhone 15, 16 and 17 families, while its separate Lightning product page is the relevant starting point for Lightning iPhones. Razer’s support page lists iPhone 15 and 16 series for the Kishi Ultra; if you have a newer model, verify that it appears in Razer’s current compatibility information rather than assuming support.

Operating-system compatibility is only part of the fit check. Phone dimensions, USB-C port position, camera clearance, and case shape all matter. Razer lists Windows 11 wired use via USB-C support, while Backbone advertises wired PC/tablet use; these are additional use cases, not a reason to assume every device fits physically.

Cases: “fits many” does not mean every case fits
Backbone’s second-generation USB-C model includes magnetic adapters designed to improve fit with more cases. Razer says the Kishi Ultra’s USB-C island design creates room for many cases, including some Apple first-party cases. Neither claim guarantees compatibility with every case.
Rugged or battery cases, raised USB-C port surrounds, oversized camera protection, wallet attachments, and fold-out stands can keep a phone from seating properly. If the controller does not align cleanly, remove the case or use the intended fit adapter; do not force the phone into place. A poorly seated phone can put leverage on its USB-C port. If you depend on a particular case, check its shape against the manufacturer’s fit guidance or buy from somewhere with a suitable return policy.
Games, streaming and the companion apps
Neither controller supplies games or makes every iPhone game controller-compatible. A game or streaming app must support a gamepad. Backbone lists Apple Arcade, controller-enabled App Store games, Xbox Game Pass, GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, and remote play from Xbox, PlayStation and PC among its use cases. Razer describes its Nexus app as a hub for discovering and launching controller-compatible games, customizing controls, recording or sharing gameplay, and updating the controller. These are app and service integrations; individual game support can change with updates.

Both can be used with supported games and services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Remote Play, PlayStation Remote Play, Steam Link, and other compatible streaming apps. Availability depends on the service, country, account, subscription, network and game. A controller does not include Xbox Game Pass, Apple Arcade, PlayStation services, GeForce NOW, Luna, or the games themselves. It also cannot compensate for a poor streaming connection: network quality and the streaming app affect the experience independently of the controller.
Does Backbone+ make the Backbone mandatory to subscribe to?
No, not for ordinary controller use with supported iPhone games. Apple’s listing says a subscription is not required to use the controller. However, Backbone’s current product page says its wired “Play on Any Screen” mode requires Backbone+. That is a specific feature distinction, not a blanket requirement for using the gamepad. Check the terms and price shown in the Backbone app at purchase because feature access and subscription terms can change.

Price and value
The cited US listings put the Backbone One USB-C 2nd Gen around $99.95–$99.99, while comparison coverage places the Kishi Ultra’s list price at about $149. These are price snapshots, not guaranteed current prices: sale pricing, stock, region and retailer can change. Compare the live cost of the exact connector version, and distinguish a temporary discount from the manufacturer’s list price.
At full list price, the Backbone is the easier value recommendation for an iPhone-first buyer who wants portability and its headset/charging features. The Kishi Ultra’s higher price makes more sense if you will use its larger grip, iPad mini fit, Android compatibility, haptics or RGB. If it is discounted close to Backbone pricing, its value improves substantially for anyone who benefits from those features. Do not count Backbone+ as an unavoidable ownership cost unless you specifically need a feature that requires it.

If a gamepad connects but a game does not respond
- Confirm the game or app supports a controller; connection alone does not add gamepad controls.
- Seat the phone fully and check that the USB-C connector is aligned. Remove an incompatible case or use the correct adapter.
- Close and reopen the game after connecting, then check the game’s own control settings.
- Update iOS or Android, the game, and the relevant companion app.
- Test another known controller-compatible game to distinguish a game-specific issue from a connection issue.
- For remote play, test the streaming or console app separately from the controller hub, and check the service’s own device and account requirements.
