Razer Kraken V2 Review: Should You Buy This Discontinued Headset in 2026?

The Razer Kraken V2 name covers two discontinued headsets: an analog Pro V2 and a USB 7.1 V2. Here is which, if either, still makes sense used in 2026.

“Razer Kraken V2” describes two different headsets. The Kraken Pro V2 is a 3.5mm stereo model; the Kraken 7.1 V2 is a USB PC headset with software-controlled virtual surround. Both were competent budget gaming headsets when released, but both are discontinued. In 2026, buy one only second-hand at a genuinely low price and only after testing its cable, microphone, pads and platform compatibility.

Which Kraken V2 are you looking at?

Razer launched the Pro V2 and 7.1 V2 as the same generation, with 50mm neodymium drivers, an aluminum frame and large circumaural cushions. Their connectors and feature sets are not interchangeable. Razer’s launch announcement is at Razer’s Kraken V2 announcement.

Model Connection Sound processing Best suited to Main drawback
Kraken Pro V2 (RZ04-02050) 3.5mm analog Stereo; platform/game processing is optional PC, consoles, controllers and compatible mobile devices No built-in USB processing or Razer virtual surround
Kraken 7.1 V2 (RZ04-02060) USB Virtual 7.1 through PC software PC gaming and chat Legacy software and more limited console feature support

Check the connector and model number in a listing before buying. A seller who only writes “Kraken V2” has not identified the product adequately.

Build quality and long-term durability

Both versions use a unibody aluminum frame, padded headband, large leatherette cushions and 50mm drivers. That construction feels more substantial than a very light plastic headset, but it also makes the Kraken V2 heavy by current standards. SoundGuys lists the Pro V2 at approximately 357g, while Razer lists the 7.1 V2 at approximately 346g.

#1 Best Overall
Razer BlackShark V2 X Gaming Headset: 7.1 Surround Sound - 50mm Drivers - Memory Foam Cushion - For PC, PS4, PS5, Switch - 3.5mm Audio Jack - Black
  • ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — sturdy closed earcups fully cover ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation.
  • 7.1 SURROUND SOUND FOR POSITIONAL AUDIO — Outfitted with custom-tuned 50 mm drivers, capable of software-enabled surround sound. *Only available on Windows 10 64-bit
  • TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50MM HIGH-END SOUND DRIVERS — With titanium-coated diaphragms for added clarity, our new, cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lowsproducing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH BREATHABLE FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240g, the BlackShark V2X is engineered from the ground up for maximum comfort
  • RAZER HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — Improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides

The fixed cable is the largest second-hand risk. A break near the plug or earcup can make repair uneconomical. Leatherette can peel, crack or flatten after years in storage, and a used headband may be stretched. Replacement pads can restore the seal but may change bass, isolation, comfort and microphone leakage; they will not necessarily feel like the originals.

Comfort for gaming sessions

Deep earcups and thick padding can be comfortable for long sessions, and the Pro V2 was judged comfortable in its original review. Comfort is not universal, however. The headset’s mass becomes tiring sooner on a small head, while larger heads may notice clamp pressure despite the generous earcups. Glasses can be pressed into the temples by the leatherette seal, and the pads can become hot in a warm room.

The 7.1 V2 review describes a sturdy but stiff fit. Treat comfort as a personal fit question, especially when buying used: ask for the pad condition and, if possible, wear the headset for at least 20 minutes before keeping it.

Audio quality

Kraken Pro V2

The Pro V2 is tuned for gaming rather than neutral music listening. Its stronger bass adds weight to explosions and other effects, but detail and tonal balance are merely average by modern standards. It remains simple to use because the analog connection needs no Razer software.

Kraken 7.1 V2

The 7.1 V2 has a more obvious bass emphasis. That can make single-player games cinematic, yet bass can mask mids and subtle cues such as footsteps, dialogue, strings and cymbals. SoundGuys found the equalizer adjustable from roughly 125Hz to 16kHz, provided the required legacy software is available.

Stereo versus virtual 7.1

“7.1” means virtual processing, not seven physical speakers. It can make a game sound wider and may help some players separate directions, but it can also sound less natural or less precise than stereo. Compare native stereo, the game’s own spatial mode and Razer processing separately. Stacking headset surround on top of game-native spatial audio can make positioning worse.

  • HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
  • HYBRID FABRIC AND MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — Wrapped in a combination of breathable fabric and plush leatherette to provide a snug fit to ensure constant comfort for prolonged gaming
  • 7.1 SURROUND SOUND — Provides accurate positional audio that lets you pinpoint intuitively where every sound is coming from. *Only available on Windows 10 64-bit

Microphone performance

The 7.1 V2 has a retractable, unidirectional MEMS microphone. Razer specifies a 100Hz–10kHz response, signal-to-noise ratio above 55dB and sensitivity of −38 ±3dB. Its active microphone noise cancellation is a PC-only feature. SoundGuys found speech clear enough for Discord and team chat, with a midrange emphasis that can make lower voices sound thinner.

The Pro V2 microphone is serviceable for ordinary chat, but it does not provide the 7.1 V2’s PC processing. Neither should be treated as a broadcast microphone. For a used unit, record a short sample, move the cable and microphone arm while recording, test mute controls and confirm that the arm retracts and stays in position.

Compatibility and software support

Pro V2: the straightforward option

The Pro V2 uses a 3.5mm headset plug and includes a 1.3m cable plus a 2m splitter extension. It can use the audio hardware in a PC, controller, console or compatible phone, so it is generally the safer choice when you need simple analog operation. The exact experience still depends on the controller, adapter and device jack. See Razer’s Pro V2 support page.

7.1 V2: PC-first ownership

The 7.1 V2 is a USB headset with a 2m cable. Basic USB audio may work on a modern computer, but SoundGuys reports that it does not support Synapse 3; owners may need an older Razer software version for equalizer and surround controls. That makes the headset less future-proof even if sound output still functions. Razer’s current specifications and controls are documented on the 7.1 V2 support page.

  • PlayStation: the Pro V2 through a compatible controller or audio output is the safer bet; do not assume the 7.1 V2’s PC processing carries over.
  • Xbox: verify the exact console, controller and adapter before purchase; USB and PC features are not guaranteed.
  • Nintendo Switch: analog Pro V2 use is more predictable; 7.1 V2 behavior varies between docked and handheld use.
  • Mobile: the Pro V2 needs a compatible 3.5mm jack or adapter. The USB 7.1 V2 is impractical for most phones.

Should you buy one used in 2026?

Both models are discontinued. Their original launch prices—$79.99 for the Pro V2 and $99.99 for the 7.1 V2—describe 2016–2017 positioning, not present value. A Best Buy listing once showed a $69.99 7.1 V2 clearance price, but it was unavailable; it is not a current deal.

Compare any used asking price with a new entry-level headset that includes a warranty. Add the cost of pads, a missing splitter, shipping and the risk of legacy software. “New old stock” can still have aged foam and deteriorated leatherette.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Confirm Pro V2 or 7.1 V2, model number and connector from photographs.
  • Confirm that both channels, volume controls and mute work.
  • Test the microphone and listen for crackle while moving the cable.
  • Inspect pads, hinges, headband adjustment and USB plug or analog cable.
  • Confirm the included splitter or original cable.
  • Test the headset on the exact PC, console or controller you will use.
  • Reject units with intermittent sound, USB disconnects, severe pad damage or unexplained repairs.

Kraken Pro V2 versus Kraken 7.1 V2

Question Pro V2 7.1 V2
Which is easiest to plug in? Pro V2, via 3.5mm USB and software dependent
Which suits PC features? Basic analog only 7.1 V2, if legacy software works
Which is more flexible across devices? Pro V2 7.1 V2 is primarily PC-oriented
Which has PC microphone ANC? No Yes, PC only
Who should consider it? Someone wanting cheap, simple stereo A PC buyer specifically wanting USB virtual surround

Better directions for your money

  • Newer Razer wired option: SoundGuys describes the Kraken V3 as more comfortable, more consistent sounding and better isolating than the Pro V2; its cited roughly $99 price is historical, so verify current stock and pricing.
  • Cheaper basic headset: SoundGuys presents the Kraken X as offering more accurate sound and surround support than the Pro V2 in its comparison; current availability is not established here.
  • Balanced gaming and music: SoundGuys recommends considering the HyperX Cloud Alpha when audio quality matters; its historical price comparison is not a 2026 quote.
  • Wireless or modern software: Look at currently supported BlackShark or other wireless models, checking the manufacturer’s current compatibility, warranty and software pages before purchase.

Verdict

Choose a Kraken Pro V2 only when it is substantially cheaper than a current wired headset and you specifically want analog, multi-platform simplicity. Choose a Kraken 7.1 V2 only when you are a PC user who wants its USB surround features, accepts legacy software and has tested the unit. For most buyers, a newer headset with current software support, fresh pads and a warranty is the safer 2026 purchase.
