If rdpencom.dll is missing, Windows or an application may stop with a “not found,” “cannot be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows” error. rdpencom.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, so the safest repair is to restore Windows or repair the application that called it, not download a replacement DLL.
Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error
- Whether the error appears during Windows startup or only when launching one application
- Whether it began after Windows Update, a cleanup tool, antivirus detection, a disk problem, or software installation
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the file exists in
System32orSysWOW64 - Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit
Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter to identify the Windows release.
If the message appears across several applications or during startup, prioritize Windows repair. If only one game or program fails, repair that application after checking Windows.
What rdpencom.dll is
rdpencom.dll is a Microsoft Windows DLL described as RDPSRAPI COM Objects. It provides COM objects used by the Windows Desktop Sharing API, also known as the Remote Desktop Services collaboration API. Microsoft documents the related interfaces through rdpencomapi.h, and identifies the implementation as RdpEncom.dll in its API documentation.

#1 Best Overall
This is related to Windows Desktop Sharing, but that does not mean every ordinary Remote Desktop connection directly requires this file. The DLL is part of Windows itself and is not a standalone Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET component.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because rdpencom.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because rdpencom.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading rdpencom.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file rdpencom.dll is missing or corrupt.”
- “rdpencom.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32rdpencom.dll.”
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that another DLL required by rdpencom.dll is missing. The named file is not always the entire problem.
Check the correct Windows folders
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32rdpencom.dllfor the native 64-bit Windows componentC:WindowsSysWOW64rdpencom.dllfor the 32-bit Windows-on-Windows component
On 32-bit Windows, the normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32rdpencom.dll
Despite its name, System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
Open File Explorer and enter each path in the address bar. Do not copy a file between these folders based only on its size or on a version list from a DLL download site.
You can also inspect both locations with PowerShell. Open Start, search for PowerShell, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and run:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32rdpencom.dll",
"$env:windirSysWOW64rdpencom.dll" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName, Length, VersionInfo
A genuine copy should be in a Windows system directory and should have Microsoft file metadata and a valid Microsoft digital signature. Right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer. If the file is in a temporary folder, a download folder, or an application’s private directory, treat it as suspicious until verified.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave a protected Windows DLL missing or damaged.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Try the affected application again. If the error remains, use the component repair commands below. Microsoft also provides a Windows Update troubleshooting guide for updates that repeatedly fail.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair when rdpencom.dll is absent from a Windows system folder, has a bad signature, or multiple programs report related errors.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear paused for a while. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish, then test the application again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPossible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect protected-file damage. The application or a dependency may be the real problem.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, move to Windows recovery options or matching installation media.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a genuine matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to the matching repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, but Windows Update and DISM remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
If Windows itself works normally and only one program reports rdpencom.dll, the program may have a damaged installation, incorrect dependency, or broken configuration.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
The Repair option is not available for every application. If it is missing or ineffective, use the program’s official installer to reinstall it.
Traditional desktop programs
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
For games, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command. This restores files belonging to the game without replacing Windows components.
If repair fails, uninstall the affected program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. Do not place a random copy of rdpencom.dll into the program’s folder unless the publisher specifically documents a private copy. Because this DLL ships with Windows, a normal application reinstall should not be used as a substitute for repairing Windows when the system copy is missing.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
If the error started immediately after a security alert, Windows Security may have quarantined a file or blocked the application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections related to the application or
rdpencom.dll.
Do not automatically select Allow on device. First verify the original path, the Microsoft signature, and the detection details. Microsoft explains the process in its Protection History guidance.
If a genuine Windows copy was quarantined, repairing Windows with DISM and SFC is safer than downloading a replacement. If the file was found outside a Windows system directory or lacks a valid signature, leave it quarantined and run a complete security scan.
Fix 5: Consider architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not load system components in the same way. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit program normally uses the copy in SysWOW64, while a native 64-bit program uses System32.
A 64-bit DLL cannot satisfy a 32-bit dependency, and a 32-bit DLL cannot satisfy a 64-bit dependency. Manually swapping files can therefore create a second error instead of fixing the first.
If the file exists and is signed but the message says “the specified module could not be found,” repair Windows first. Then repair the affected application and inspect its own dependencies or event logs. File size alone is not a reliable way to select a compatible build.
Fix 6: Update a related driver only when evidence points there
A display, network, or remote-access driver is not the normal cause of a missing Windows Desktop Sharing DLL. Consider a driver update only if the error began directly after a driver installation, Device Manager reports a device problem, or the application documents a driver dependency.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failing application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or install a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
When checking many hardware entries manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required to repair rdpencom.dll itself.
Do not remove devices or roll back drivers unless the timing and Device Manager evidence support that step.

If the problem began after a Windows update, driver installation, or software installation, try System Restore or remove the recent change.
Microsoft’s recovery options explain which method fits each situation. System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files, but it can remove recently installed applications or drivers.
On supported Windows 11 installations, you may also have this option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
This reinstalls the same Windows version while repairing system files and components and preserving applications, files, and settings.

If recovery cannot restore the component, use a matching Windows installation source for an in-place repair, or use Windows recovery media as a later step.
Do not start with DLL download sites or regsvr32
Downloading rdpencom.dll from a random DLL repository is risky. The file may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, signature, or malicious modifications. It may also leave the damaged component store or missing dependency untouched.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, genuine matching installation media, and the Windows installation itself. Do not copy an arbitrary file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application’s folder.
regsvr32 is also not a general missing-DLL repair tool. rdpencom.dll is a COM DLL, so registration can be technically relevant when a specific COM activation error and authoritative application documentation identify registration as the problem. It cannot recreate a missing file, repair dependencies, or correct a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
Do not lead with:
regsvr32 rdpencom.dll
Use it only for a documented registration problem, and use the correctly matched 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 tool from the appropriate Windows environment.
Frequently asked questions
Is rdpencom.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL named RDPSRAPI COM Objects and belongs to the Windows Desktop Sharing API.
Do I need to install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for rdpencom.dll itself. It is a Windows component, not a separate Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET installer file. Install another runtime only when the actual error separately identifies that runtime.
Is rdpencom.dll required for every Remote Desktop connection?
No such broad conclusion should be made. The DLL belongs to Windows Desktop Sharing and remote-session collaboration APIs, while ordinary Remote Desktop usage does not necessarily invoke every Desktop Sharing component.
Recommended Free Tools
What if the file exists but the program still fails?
The named file may depend on another missing Windows DLL, or the application may have its own damaged installation. Run DISM and SFC, check the file signature and location, then repair or reinstall the calling application.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows uses versioned component-store files and architecture-specific paths. Copying from another PC can produce an incompatible or incorrectly serviced system.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error remains?
Restart first. If the error continues, focus on the calling application, its architecture, dependencies, antivirus history, and event logs. If several programs still fail, continue with Windows recovery rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.
