What Gloom Gate is
RPG Site’s September 9, 2026 announcement report described Gloom Gate as a blend of old-school dungeon crawling and soulslike design, delivered as a reaction-based action RPG. That framing carried into the October 8, 2026 launch coverage. In practical terms, the game asks you to dodge and respond in real time while exploring a dungeon, rather than selecting attacks from a menu, and the old-school side shows up in its maze-like layout and progression systems.
How the game is available: Season Three versus a standalone listing
Gloom Gate’s listing on the official Playdate Season Three page places it inside the season collection and credits it to LuBu. Season Three is therefore the confirmed way to get the game. Two situations are worth separating, because they involve different steps:

Because the schedule is staged, a player who buys the season early will see the full game list only as each week’s titles arrive. The coverage does not state whether the full eight games are unlocked at purchase or delivered on the weekly schedule; check the Catalog listing before assuming either.
Price and purchase checks
The official Season Three page showed a preorder price of $39. RPG Site reported the same $39 price on October 8, 2026, the day the season became available through Playdate Catalog. Season prices can change, and these figures reflect the coverage as published on those dates rather than a live listing. Confirm the current price in Playdate Catalog before advising anyone to buy, and do not assume the $39 figure applies to any separate sale of Gloom Gate.

Combat
Combat is real-time and reaction-based. Enemies are placed in the center of an over-the-shoulder view, which is the perspective the developer describes building the game around.

The developer’s account
In his developer statement, reproduced in RPG Site’s October 8, 2026 launch report, Lukas Büffel said: “Gloom Gate started as an experiment in which I wanted to find out if I could develop a good workflow for a pseudo-3D game with an over-the-shoulder view of the player with an enemy in the center.” The same statement covers building 3D characters, converting their graphics for Playdate’s 1-bit display, and fitting animated assets into the device’s memory. These are the developer’s own accounts as published by RPG Site; this article did not interview him directly.
Before you buy
- Open the Playdate Catalog and confirm the current Season Three price.
- Check whether Gloom Gate is sold separately. As of the coverage cited here, no standalone listing or price has been published.
- If you do not own a Playdate, factor the handheld into the total cost, since the game is listed for that platform only.
- Expect about 226 MB of storage for the whole season, and check your device’s free space first.
- Look at the weekly release schedule to see when Gloom Gate becomes available if it is not among the first titles you can access.
Season Three is the confirmed route to Gloom Gate, with a clear platform listing and an official game list. Anything beyond that, including a standalone price, should be checked directly with Playdate Catalog before purchase.
