The REANIMAL team announced on August 28, 2026, that it fixed DX12 boot crashes and DX11 black screens on PC. Other checks—especially verifying your PC meets the published requirements—can help narrow down the cause, but no single fix is established for every crash.
1. Update REANIMAL before trying older fixes
Check Steam for an available game update, then test the current build. In its August 28, 2026 Steam announcement, “REANIMAL – Bugfix Patch & HDR Update,” the REANIMAL team said it “Fixed crashes on boot when running on DX12 (PC)” and fixed black-screen issues on DX11. If you are following an older post about either problem, confirm that the patch is installed before relying on its workaround.
The patch notes describe specific fixes; they do not establish that every boot crash or black screen has the same cause.
2. Compare your PC with the complete minimum requirements
Steam’s REANIMAL store listing gives these minimum PC requirements. They are published specifications, not a guarantee that a system meeting them will be crash-free.

Steam lists 16 GB RAM as the recommended memory amount. Check your processor and graphics card as well as RAM: having 8 GB alone does not mean the full minimum requirements are met.
3. If you have an Nvidia GPU, update its driver
In its Patch 1.6 announcement, the REANIMAL team described Nvidia GPU crashes it had seen as driver-related and advised players to update their drivers: “Make sure you update to the latest drivers before playing, that should resolve GPU crash issues on Nvidia hardware.” That guidance is specific to the Nvidia crashes described in that announcement; it does not diagnose every Nvidia crash or establish a fix for AMD hardware.

4. Match the symptom to the patch note
Note when the crash happens and what appears on screen. A DX12 crash during startup and a DX11 black screen are the exact cases named in the August 28, 2026 patch announcement. If your game is current and the problem continues—or your symptom is different—the announcement does not identify the cause.
- Crash on launch: Check the game update first, then compare your PC with the full minimum requirements.
- Black screen: Check the installed build and whether the issue matches the DX11 black-screen fix in the patch notes.
- Crash after play begins: Record where it happens; the cited patch note does not name all in-game crashes as fixed.
- Character or camera stuck: Determine whether this is a softlock rather than an application crash.
5. Try a different graphics API only as an experiment
A Steam community discussion suggests adding -dx11 as a launch option. This is an anecdotal player suggestion, not an official guarantee. Try it only after checking that the game is updated, particularly because the team’s later August 28, 2026 notes say it fixed DX11 black-screen issues. If changing the option makes no difference or creates another problem, remove it and return to the default launch settings.

6. Lower graphics settings as a limited community suggestion
The same community discussion suggests reducing graphics settings. The official sources do not identify a particular setting as a crash cause or establish a reliable outcome from lowering settings, so treat this as a low-confidence troubleshooting experiment rather than a proven fix. If the game stays open long enough, change settings and test whether the same crash still occurs.
7. Restart only for the documented Mall camera softlock
The August 28, 2026 announcement gives restarting from the checkpoint as a workaround for a specific Mall camera softlock. Use that when the game remains running but progress is blocked by that issue; it is not a general remedy for a PC crash or black screen.

8. Send persistent crashes to official support
Steam lists [email protected] as the official support contact for REANIMAL. A useful report can include your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, game build, graphics driver date, when the failure occurs, any error text, and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried. These details can help describe the problem; Steam does not list them as formal requirements.
