For gaming performance per dollar, the RedMagic 11 Air is the better buy. The ROG Phone 9 is not currently twice its price in the U.S. figures available: RedMagic lists a 16GB/512GB 11 Air at $629, while ASUS announced a $999.99 U.S. MSRP for the 12GB/256GB ROG Phone 9—about 59% more. Both use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, so the ROG’s higher price does not buy a newer chipset. It buys a more complete everyday phone: IP68-rated protection, wireless charging, a more versatile stabilized camera system, an adaptive brighter display, and ASUS’s gaming controls and support commitment. Choose the RedMagic for gaming-first value; pay for the ROG if those everyday advantages matter enough to you.
Price first: the gap is large, but not 2×
At the listed U.S. prices, the RedMagic 11 Air costs $629 for 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. ASUS’s U.S. launch MSRP for the standard ROG Phone 9 was $999.99 for 12GB/256GB. That is a $370.99 difference, making the ROG about 1.59 times the RedMagic’s price—not double. RedMagic’s figure is a current product-page price signal; ASUS’s is a launch MSRP, so check live price, stock, tax, shipping, and bundle contents before buying. This is not a perfectly like-for-like price comparison: the listed RedMagic configuration has twice the storage and more RAM than ASUS’s U.S. launch configuration. Make sure you are comparing the exact regional SKU and package, including charger, case, warranty, and any gaming accessories.
Gaming performance: same chip, different thermal strategy
Both phones are built around the Snapdragon 8 Elite. That makes cooling, firmware tuning, game profiles, and sustained heat management more relevant than the chipset name when deciding how they behave in a long session. Neither the shared processor nor a single benchmark proves that one phone will run every game faster.

The RedMagic 11 Air’s defining gaming advantage is its integrated fan and ICE cooling system. It is designed to move air through the phone and help manage heat without attaching a separate cooler. RedMagic also includes bypass charging: when gaming while plugged in, this can route power to the system rather than charging the battery in the usual way. That is useful for desk or long-session play, though it does not eliminate heat or make charging behavior irrelevant.
The ROG Phone 9 pairs ASUS thermal management with Game Genie performance controls and AirTriggers. Its optional AeroActive Cooler X is a separate accessory for standard configurations, so do not assume it comes in the box. ASUS listed the Cooler X at $99.99 and the Cooler X Pro at $119.99; the Pro accessory is included only with the ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition according to ASUS. Independent coverage suggests the 11 Air can compete strongly with more expensive gaming phones, and a GamesRadar graphics stress test reported results favorable to it against higher-priced ROG models. Treat that as evidence of value, not a universal win: results depend on the game, test length, software mode, temperature, and cooling setup. (GamesRadar review)

It would also disclose whether the RedMagic fan is on and whether the ROG has an optional cooler attached. Peak benchmark scores and performance after 20–30 minutes answer different questions. Without those matched conditions, a claim that one is simply “faster” overstates what the evidence shows.

The trade-off is practical. The RedMagic’s fan can make noise, draw in dust, and add moving hardware to a phone whose design is explicitly gaming-focused. The ROG’s external cooler can be removed when you are done playing, but it costs extra and makes the phone less portable while attached.
Battery, charging, and playing unplugged
RedMagic’s 7,000mAh battery is substantially larger on paper than the ROG’s 5,800mAh cell, and its 80W wired charging is rated above the ROG’s 65W HyperCharge. The capacity makes the RedMagic the more obvious pick for endurance-focused gaming, but it does not translate directly into a predictable number of hours. Refresh rate, brightness, cellular signal, game workload, background apps, and performance mode all affect battery life. The ROG’s 15W Qi wireless charging is the more convenient everyday feature, particularly if you already use a wireless charging stand. It matters less if your phone normally stays plugged in at a gaming desk. For extended plugged-in play, RedMagic’s bypass charging is a specific gaming-focused advantage; ASUS offers charging and gaming controls in its software, but the two approaches are not identical.

The RedMagic has a 6.85-inch OLED with a 144Hz refresh rate and an uninterrupted front surface, thanks to an under-display selfie camera. Its large, notch-less panel is well suited to games that benefit from an expansive view. The ROG Phone 9 uses a 6.78-inch FHD+ Samsung Flexible AMOLED LTPO display. ASUS lists adaptive refresh from 1Hz to 120Hz, up to 165Hz in system settings, and up to 185Hz through Game Genie. It also advertises peak brightness of 2,500 nits, touch sampling up to 720Hz, AirTriggers, and AniMe Vision on supported configurations or designs. Those headline maxima need context: 185Hz is a Game Genie mode, not a rate every app or game will use, and compatible content must support high frame rates. (ROG Phone 9 specifications)
In short, RedMagic favors a larger, uninterrupted gaming canvas. ROG offers more adaptive refresh behavior, higher advertised gaming refresh and touch-sampling figures, brighter viewing, and ASUS’s integrated control interface. The better screen depends on whether you prize full-screen immersion or flexibility beyond gaming.
Cameras and everyday use: where the ROG earns its premium
The camera system is one of the clearest reasons to choose the ROG if this will be your primary phone. ASUS lists a 50MP main camera with a six-axis Hybrid Gimbal Stabilizer, a 13MP ultra-wide, and a 32MP telephoto with 3× optical zoom and OIS. That gives it more shooting options for travel, family, pets, portraits, and video than the RedMagic’s more gaming-oriented setup. A more versatile system does not automatically make the ROG a camera-phone leader; judge that against actual image samples and dedicated camera-focused phones, not a spec sheet alone. RedMagic lists a 50MP OIS main camera and an ultra-wide, but independent TechRadar coverage identifies the camera system—particularly the downgraded 8MP ultra-wide—as a significant compromise. The under-display selfie camera preserves the screen’s clean appearance, but its image quality should not be assumed to match a conventional front camera. Durability, software support, and compatibility
ASUS lists the ROG Phone 9 as IP68-rated and gives its dimensions as 163.8 × 77 × 8.9mm and weight as 227g. IP68 is an ingress-protection rating, not a promise that a phone is waterproof or that liquid damage is covered by warranty. The RedMagic’s official materials emphasize cooling and gaming features; do not assume it offers equivalent water resistance unless the exact regional model’s documentation says so. For rain, spills, or dusty travel, the ROG is the safer documented choice, while warranty terms still need checking. (ASUS specifications)
ASUS states that the ROG Phone 9 will receive two OS updates and five years of security updates. Its U.S. support page lists hardware support through 2027 and security updates through 2029. These dates and commitments are useful if you plan to keep the phone for years, but they are finite rather than “future-proof.” The available RedMagic materials here do not establish an equivalent region-specific commitment, so compare the support policy for the exact model you are buying rather than assuming parity or declaring RedMagic’s support categorically worse. Before buying either phone, confirm the exact U.S. or global SKU, carrier LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling support, eSIM availability if required, and the carrier’s activation rules. ASUS publishes separate U.S. and worldwide band configurations; RedMagic specifically cautions buyers to check the listed bands against their carrier. A listing that simply says “global version” is not enough. Also check firmware region, warranty and service access, return policy, and whether your banking, DRM, or essential apps work as expected on that regional software. Which one should you buy?
- Buy the RedMagic 11 Air if your priority is gaming hardware per dollar, long sessions, active internal cooling, a large battery, bypass charging, shoulder triggers, and a full-screen front. It is especially compelling if you already have another phone for photography or work and your carrier supports the exact model.
- Buy the ROG Phone 9 if this is your only phone and you value IP68 protection, a more versatile stabilized camera system, wireless charging, adaptive brightness and refresh behavior, AirTriggers, ASUS’s gaming interface, and a stated security-support window. It makes more sense when those benefits replace compromises or accessories you would otherwise need.
- Do not pay the ROG premium just for the chipset. Both phones use Snapdragon 8 Elite. Nor should you pay on the assumption that every game will run materially faster, that 185Hz applies everywhere, or that the standard ROG bundle includes an AeroActive Cooler.
Also account for the complete setup. RedMagic’s official listing can include a charger and case depending on the regional package, so verify what is in the box. A standard ROG buyer who wants external cooling may spend more on the optional accessory. Conversely, someone who chooses the RedMagic but needs a separate camera-focused phone or wireless charging solution may find that the upfront saving does not capture their full ownership cost.

Three-part verdict
Better value for gaming: RedMagic 11 Air. It combines the same chipset with integrated active cooling, a larger battery, bypass charging, and more memory and storage in the listed U.S. configuration for less money.
Better all-around phone: ROG Phone 9, based on its documented camera versatility, IP68 rating, wireless charging, adaptive LTPO display, and clearer support commitment.
Is the ROG worth the premium? Not if your only goal is the most gaming hardware per dollar. It can be worth roughly 59% more at the cited U.S. price if you will use its camera, durability, wireless charging, and software advantages every day—and if the live price and package still make sense. The title’s “double” is a hook, not the current U.S. price ratio.
