REDMAGIC has launched the Astra 2, a compact gaming tablet built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, an 185Hz OLED display and a new liquid-cooling system. The tablet starts at a reported $749 globally, with regional hardware differences: in China, the corresponding device is sold as the REDMAGIC Gaming Tablet 5 Pro.
REDMAGIC’s global launch schedule listed early access for August 25, 2026, followed by general availability on August 26. Buyers should not assume that the Chinese and international models share identical batteries, charging speeds, memory options, software or warranties.

The Astra 2 keeps the compact gaming-tablet format introduced by the original Astra rather than moving to an 11- or 13-inch screen. REDMAGIC’s launch announcement confirms the new Snapdragon platform and liquid cooling, while launch coverage reports the following global configurations and pricing.

REDMAGIC’s launch material describes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as a 3nm chip with a claimed peak speed of 4.6GHz. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured performance result. The tablet’s final regional specification page should be used to confirm details such as battery capacity, dimensions, weight, port standards and package contents.

Astra 2 and Gaming Tablet 5 Pro are regional versions
The international product is called the REDMAGIC Astra 2. In China, the corresponding tablet is called the REDMAGIC Gaming Tablet 5 Pro. They should not be treated as one universal specification sheet.
Chinese-model coverage reports an 8,300mAh battery, 80W wired charging and different memory configurations, including a reported 16GB/1TB version. Those figures must not be transferred to the global Astra 2 without confirmation. Regional differences can also affect the Android build, REDMAGIC OS features, AI tools, Google-service availability, network compatibility, warranty and update policy.

The Chinese model has also been reported with REDMAGIC’s Energy Cube 3.0 gaming optimization engine and Android 16 with REDMAGIC OS 11.5. Those details should be attributed to the China-market coverage rather than presented as confirmed global Astra 2 software.
The biggest upgrade is sustained gaming performance
The original Astra used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. Astra 2 moves to the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and adds the RedCore R4 gaming chip. That gives REDMAGIC a more substantial generational upgrade than a simple clock-speed increase.

The practical question is not only how quickly the tablet performs in a short benchmark. The new liquid-cooling design is intended to move heat away from the processor during extended sessions, potentially reducing throttling and helping the tablet maintain steadier frame rates. Chinese-model coverage describes an ultra-thin micro-pump circulating coolant through sealed tubing, alongside vapor chambers and other heat-dissipation components.
Liquid cooling is not a guarantee that the exterior will remain cool, nor does it make the tablet water-resistant. Hands-on coverage found that the Astra 2 handled sustained gaming strongly but still became warm under load. Actual results will vary with the game engine, frame-rate target, ambient temperature, software tuning and the selected performance mode.
Emulation performance should also be judged cautiously. A newer flagship chip and better thermal management are promising, but emulator compatibility and performance depend heavily on the emulator, operating system, graphics driver and individual game.
The 185Hz OLED display remains the main attraction
The Astra 2 retains the original Astra’s 9.06-inch, 2,400 × 1,504 OLED format. The panel’s maximum refresh rate rises from the original model’s listed 165Hz to 185Hz.
OLED gives the tablet deep blacks, high contrast and strong image quality for games and video. The compact 16:10 screen is also easier to hold for handheld-style gaming than a larger productivity tablet, while offering more viewing area than a phone.

However, 185Hz is a ceiling, not a promise that every game will render at 185 frames per second. Many Android games remain limited to 60Hz or 120Hz. The benefit depends on whether a particular title supports higher refresh rates, whether the hardware can sustain the required frame rate and whether the game’s touch controls can take advantage of the panel’s responsiveness.

For many players, a stable 120Hz experience may matter more than the difference between 165Hz and 185Hz. Running at a higher refresh rate can also affect battery consumption, although the impact depends on the game, brightness, performance mode and software behavior.
REDMAGIC’s earlier Astra materials list touch capabilities of up to 2,000Hz and 240Hz multi-finger sampling. Those figures should not automatically be treated as final Astra 2 specifications unless confirmed on the newer international product page.

The comparison shows why Astra 2 is best understood as an evolutionary refresh. Its core identity remains unchanged: a small OLED gaming tablet with flagship Android hardware. The meaningful changes are the processor, thermal architecture, gaming chip, refresh rate and battery development—not a radically different chassis or a larger display.
The original Astra’s official specifications list dimensions of 134.2mm by 207mm by 6.9mm, a weight of 370g, one USB-C port, USB 3.2 Gen 2, DisplayPort support, Wi-Fi 6-class connectivity and Bluetooth 5.4. Unless REDMAGIC confirms that these specifications carry over, they should be treated as context from the previous model rather than guaranteed Astra 2 figures.

Price, storage and the total cost of ownership
Reported global pricing is:
- 12GB RAM/256GB: $749, €699 or £599.
- 16GB RAM/512GB: $849, €799 or £679.
That price positions Astra 2 as a premium gaming tablet rather than a low-cost Android alternative. Its value depends heavily on how much the buyer prioritizes an OLED panel, compact size and sustained gaming performance.
No 1TB global version was reported in the available launch coverage, even though the original Astra offered up to 1TB and the Chinese Gaming Tablet 5 Pro was reported with a 16GB/1TB configuration. The available information also does not establish a microSD card slot for Astra 2. Buyers who keep large game libraries, emulator ROM collections, recordings or downloaded media should consider 512GB carefully before choosing the 256GB model.

The original global Astra’s box contents list the tablet, USB-C cable, warranty card, manual and sticker, but generally omit a charger. REDMAGIC has made exceptions for some early-bird buyers, Brazil orders and special campaigns. Astra 2 buyers should check the specific launch promotion and regional package rather than assume that a high-wattage charger is included.
Controllers can connect through Bluetooth or USB-C, but physical compatibility is less straightforward. REDMAGIC warns that some stretchable gamepads may not fit because of the tablet’s width, thickness and USB-C port placement. Before buying a clamp-style controller, verify its maximum width, clearance around the port and whether it can charge the tablet while attached. Bluetooth may avoid physical-fit problems, but some players may still prefer a wired connection for latency reasons. The game itself must also support physical controls.

Software support needs regional scrutiny
The original Astra product information says REDMAGIC provides five years of software support for customers in the European Union and United Kingdom, and three years in other regions. The EU/UK description includes major Android updates and regular security patches.
That policy should not automatically be treated as an Astra 2 guarantee until REDMAGIC confirms it for the new model. It also should not be translated into “five major Android upgrades”: a support period can include a mixture of major updates and security patches. Buyers outside the EU and UK should confirm the policy for their country, while buyers importing the Chinese model should separately consider its ROM, Google-service support, app compatibility and warranty terms.
Who should buy the Astra 2?
A good fit for
- Android gamers who want flagship performance in a tablet smaller than typical 11-inch models.
- Mobile esports players who value a high-refresh OLED panel and responsive controls.
- Players who regularly game for long sessions and may benefit from improved thermal management.
- Emulation enthusiasts who want more headroom, while understanding that compatibility still depends on software.
- Buyers who prefer OLED contrast and compact handheld ergonomics over productivity-focused screen area.
A weaker fit for
- Buyers who need clearly defined, long-term software support outside the EU and UK.
- Anyone who requires expandable storage or a 1TB global configuration.
- People who expect a charger to be included as standard.
- Users focused on split-screen office work, drawing, stylus input or large-format media.
- Players whose main games are capped at 60Hz or 120Hz.
- Buyers seeking the lowest price-per-spec rather than a premium OLED gaming experience.
Verdict
The REDMAGIC Astra 2 is a focused performance upgrade, not a complete redesign. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and liquid cooling address the most important issue for demanding gaming: maintaining performance over time. The 185Hz OLED panel is attractive, but its full benefit depends on game support and sustained frame rates.

At a reported $749 starting price, the Astra 2 makes the most sense for buyers who specifically want a compact OLED gaming tablet and are willing to account for regional software policies, storage limits, charger availability and controller fit. The original Astra may remain the better value if discounted, while Astra 2 is the more compelling choice for buyers who want the newest chipset and improved thermal design.
