The original REDMAGIC Astra is a real, unusually powerful compact Android gaming tablet—but it is not currently available to order normally from REDMAGIC’s U.S. store. As of August 18, 2026, the official product page lists it from $549 and marks it out of stock. REDMAGIC’s tablet collection also lists the model as sold out.
The Astra remains attractive for Android gaming and emulation thanks to its 9.06-inch OLED display, up-to-165Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, active cooling and configurations up to 24GB RAM and 1TB storage. However, buyers should not pay an inflated reseller price without checking warranty coverage. REDMAGIC’s current U.S. store is promoting the newer Astra 2 instead.
REDMAGIC Astra: quick verdict
The Astra was one of the most compelling compact Android gaming tablets of its generation. Its combination of a high-refresh OLED screen and Snapdragon 8 Elite performance makes it particularly well suited to demanding Android games, emulation and sustained handheld play.
Its biggest problem in 2026 is availability. The original model is sold out on REDMAGIC’s U.S. product page, so the buying decision is now less about whether the hardware is good and more about whether you can find an authorized unit at a sensible price. If the Astra is unavailable or heavily marked up, the Astra 2 is the more relevant current REDMAGIC model.

Availability and price
REDMAGIC’s official U.S. product page lists the original Astra from $549, but currently labels it Out of stock. The company’s tablet collection shows the same model as sold out:
That status applies to the U.S. store. It should not be treated as proof that the tablet is unavailable in every country. Regional stores can differ in inventory, configuration, taxes, shipping, warranty terms and return policies.
Historical U.S. coverage reported promotional pricing of about $499 for 12GB/256GB, $649 for 16GB/512GB and between $849 and $899 for 24GB/1TB. Those figures reflect different launch promotions or retailer pricing, not a guaranteed current price. A used or imported Astra should be judged by its seller, region, warranty and final delivered cost—not simply by the listing price.

165Hz OLED display: excellent, but not universal
The Astra’s OLED panel is its clearest advantage over many small Android tablets. It provides deep blacks, strong contrast, high resolution and a smoother feel at high refresh rates. The 16:10 aspect ratio also gives games more usable height than a narrow phone display while keeping the tablet compact enough for handheld play.

But “165Hz display” does not mean every game runs at 165 frames per second. The accurate claim is up to 165Hz. The game must support a high-refresh mode, and the actual frame rate depends on the engine, graphics settings, thermal conditions and any frame-rate cap imposed by the developer. Many Android games remain limited to 60Hz or 120Hz.
REDMAGIC highlights selected optimized titles including Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG, Minecraft, League of Legends: Wild Rift, Arena Breakout and Delta Force. Even when a game cannot use the full refresh rate, 165Hz can make system navigation and supported applications feel smoother.

OLED brightness alone, however, does not establish HDR certification or guarantee identical behavior across streaming services. The compact size is also a trade-off: it is excellent for gaming but less comfortable than a 12- or 13-inch tablet for split-screen work.
Gaming performance and cooling
The original Astra uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite, with an Adreno GPU and a maximum listed CPU speed of 4.32GHz. That gives it ample power for high-end Android games, demanding emulation workloads and multitasking. Emulator results will still depend on the emulator, individual game compatibility, graphics settings and controller support.
REDMAGIC claims that, in a 60-minute Call of Duty: Mobile comparison with an unnamed rival tablet, the Astra averaged 144.6fps versus 120fps, reached 40.1°C versus 41.5°C and delivered 6.67 hours versus 5.26 hours of play time. These are manufacturer laboratory figures, not universal independent results.

For sustained workloads, the tablet combines a 13-layer ICE-X thermal system, Liquid Metal 2.0, a vapor chamber and a 20,000rpm active fan. Independent testing found that the cooling helped the Astra avoid serious throttling during demanding use, although the tablet could still become warm during stress tests.

A case, high brightness, unrestricted frame rates, warm surroundings and charging while playing can all change the temperature, noise and battery results.
Battery life, charging and what is in the box
The Astra has an 8,200mAh battery and supports fast charging. REDMAGIC does not provide one universal real-world runtime figure in its specifications. An independent review reported nearly eight hours of gaming, several days of ordinary use and more than 80 minutes for a recharge in that reviewer’s setup. Actual endurance varies with brightness, refresh rate, frame rate, fan mode, Wi-Fi quality, volume and ambient temperature.
The standard U.S. package includes the tablet, USB-C to USB-C cable, documentation, warranty material and stickers. A charger is not included, except with certain early-bird orders. Budget for a compatible USB-C fast charger if you do not already own one.
Software and everyday use
The Astra launched with REDMAGIC OS 10.5 based on Android 15. Its gaming-oriented software includes performance controls and Game Space features intended to help manage games, performance modes and gaming-related settings.

The tablet is capable of ordinary productivity, video playback and multitasking. USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C OTG and display output support make it more flexible than a basic gaming handheld, although an HDMI converter is required for external display use. Its smaller screen is better for portable work than for extended split-screen office sessions.
Software longevity is less reassuring. Tom’s Guide described a commitment to three years of software updates including one major Android update, while Android Central reported that the Astra would receive two software updates. Because those descriptions differ, buyers should verify the current support policy for their region rather than rely on a single fixed end date. The commitment is also less clear or extensive than the longest policies offered by Apple and Samsung.
Connectivity and expansion limitations
The Astra is Wi-Fi-only and has no 5G modem. It therefore cannot replace a cellular tablet for travel unless you use a phone hotspot or another external connection.
REDMAGIC lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.4, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C OTG and display output with an HDMI converter. The official specifications do not list a microSD card slot, so choose internal storage carefully—especially if you keep a large emulation library or many high-capacity games.

12GB RAM / 256GB storage
This is the sensible entry configuration for ordinary gaming, streaming and a moderate library. It is enough for most buyers if it is available near its official price, but 256GB can become restrictive once several large games and emulator files are installed.

16GB RAM / 512GB storage
This is the best balance for most enthusiasts. The extra storage is more useful than simply paying for additional RAM, and 16GB provides generous multitasking headroom for Android gaming and emulation.
24GB RAM / 1TB storage
Choose this version only if you genuinely need a large local library, extensive media storage or heavy multitasking. Most Android games will not become faster merely because the tablet has 24GB of RAM. Configuration and color availability can vary by region; REDMAGIC’s U.S. specifications associate the top configuration with Eclipse.
Astra versus Astra 2
REDMAGIC’s current U.S. store promotes the Astra 2, so buyers should not confuse the newer model with the original Astra. Current third-party coverage reports that Astra 2 uses the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, offers up to a 185Hz refresh rate and starts at a reported $749, with $699 early-bird pricing. REDMAGIC’s own store messaging and availability can change, so verify the live purchase terms before ordering.

For buyers who want the latest compact REDMAGIC gaming tablet, Astra 2 is the natural model to investigate. The original Astra remains a good purchase only when authorized stock is available at a reasonable price. Its Snapdragon 8 Elite is already powerful enough that ordinary Android gamers may gain little from paying a large premium for the successor.
Who should buy the REDMAGIC Astra?
- Buy it if: you want a compact Android gaming tablet, value OLED contrast, play games that support high refresh rates, need sustained performance or want a powerful emulation device.
- Reconsider it if: you need cellular data, microSD expansion, long-term update certainty, a large productivity workspace or a charger in the box.
- Avoid it at any price: if the only available unit is an imported or marketplace listing with unclear warranty coverage and a substantial scarcity markup.
Before buying an out-of-stock model, confirm the seller, exact RAM/storage configuration, regional software, return window, warranty validity and included charger. For serious gaming, also budget for a controller and protective case; the tablet itself does not turn every game into a console-style experience.
