The REDMAGIC Gaming Tablet 5 Pro is no longer just on the way: it launched in China on June 30, 2026, and REDMAGIC is selling it globally as the Astra 2. The global sale is scheduled to open August 26 at 8:00 a.m. EDT. Its main challenge to Lenovo’s Legion Tab Gen 5 is an OLED screen with a higher maximum refresh rate and a more elaborate cooling system; Lenovo counters with a 3K display, a larger battery and microSD expansion.
Gaming Tablet 5 Pro and Astra 2 are regional names for the same new tablet
REDMAGIC introduced the tablet in China as the Gaming Tablet 5 Pro. Its global product name is REDMAGIC Astra 2, successor to the original Astra. REDMAGIC’s global product page describes the Astra 2 with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and a dedicated RedCore R4 gaming chip. REDMAGIC Astra 2 specifications
REDMAGIC began its global launch campaign July 17. The campaign lists early access for August 25–26 and general sale beginning August 26 at 8:00 a.m. EDT. As of August 18, the open sale is still in the future. Availability, shipping, taxes and warranty terms depend on the regional store. REDMAGIC launch and purchase details
REDMAGIC Astra 2 specifications
The global listing pairs a compact 9.06-inch OLED panel with flagship-class Qualcomm hardware. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results.

The panel’s 185Hz ceiling is not a promise that games will render at 185 frames per second. Frame rates depend on each game’s limits, Android support, settings and sustained thermal performance. REDMAGIC’s UAE article gives a different instantaneous touch-response figure—up to 2,800Hz—than its global product page’s 2,000Hz. The global figure is used here because this is the global model listing; the discrepancy is not resolved by the cited pages. REDMAGIC UAE launch article
How it compares with Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5
Lenovo’s Legion Tab Gen 5 is the closest rival in this comparison: it is an 8.8-inch Android gaming tablet built on the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform family. Lenovo announced the model for 2026, with April availability listed in its MWC announcement. The following comparison reflects specifications and availability information published by the manufacturers, rather than hands-on testing.

Lenovo’s specifications and European estimate come from its MWC 2026 announcement, U.S. product page and Legion Tab Gen 5 specifications. The €999 estimate and REDMAGIC’s dollar prices are different regional figures, so they do not establish a like-for-like price gap. REDMAGIC’s two configuration prices also conflict with the separate “from $749” callout; check the live regional checkout before ordering.
Where the Astra 2 has an on-paper advantage
OLED and faster stated refresh
The Astra 2’s OLED display should offer stronger contrast and deeper blacks than a conventional LCD, which can benefit both games and video. Its maximum 185Hz refresh rate is also higher than Lenovo’s 165Hz. Lenovo’s counterpoint is its higher stated 3K resolution; REDMAGIC lists 2,400 × 1,504. Which matters more depends on whether a buyer values OLED contrast and refresh headroom or sharpness. Neither maximum refresh figure guarantees that a particular game supports the panel’s full rate.

Cooling built around long gaming sessions
REDMAGIC highlights a 12-layer AquaCore system with flowing liquid cooling, Liquid Metal 3.0, a large vapor chamber and bypass charging, which is intended to reduce heat while gaming on a charger. Lenovo uses its Legion ColdFront vapor-cooling system and says it improves heat-dissipation efficiency by up to 32% over the previous generation. Those are manufacturer descriptions and comparisons, not proof that one tablet runs cooler or sustains higher frame rates than the other.
Fast charging and gaming features
REDMAGIC lists charging up to 75W and a RedCore R4 gaming chip. Buyers should check whether a suitable charger is included in their region and whether the early-bird promotion applies: REDMAGIC advertises a free charger and one gift for eligible early buyers, subject to offer terms. Its launch page also describes free shipping on orders over $400 and 15-day returns, but regional terms apply. Check REDMAGIC’s current launch terms

Where Lenovo may be the better fit
More battery capacity and expandable storage
Lenovo lists a 9,000mAh battery, compared with REDMAGIC’s 8,300mAh typical capacity. Capacity alone does not establish which lasts longer: display settings, game load, network use and software affect endurance. Lenovo also supports microSD cards up to 2TB, a substantial practical advantage for users with large offline libraries. Astra 2’s listed configurations top out at 512GB.
Resolution, Wi-Fi and support channel
The Legion’s 3K display and listed Wi-Fi 7 may matter more than OLED or a higher refresh ceiling for some buyers. Lenovo’s established retail and Legion ecosystem can also be attractive, depending on local availability and service coverage. Support, repair options and accessory compatibility vary by country, so check the official regional listing rather than assuming identical terms worldwide. Lenovo’s U.S. model listing is at Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5.

REDMAGIC’s gaming claims are not a Lenovo-versus-Astra benchmark
REDMAGIC Labs reports a one-hour Call of Duty: Mobile test with an average of 145.3fps and 1% lows of 136.5fps, alongside 43.8°C and 8.33 hours of gaming battery life. The comparison figures on the same page—143.8fps average, 127.9fps 1% lows, 45.1°C and five hours—are against an unnamed competing Android tablet. They are REDMAGIC’s internal results, not independent measurements, and the rival is not identified as the Legion Tab Gen 5. They therefore do not establish that Astra 2 beats Lenovo. REDMAGIC’s published test figures and product claims
A convincing performance comparison would need independent, same-game testing on both tablets, including frame rates and frame-time stability after 30–60 minutes, battery drain, surface temperatures and behavior while charging. Game-by-game compatibility matters too: titles such as Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG Mobile, Warzone Mobile and emulators can have different frame-rate limits and optimization. REDMAGIC’s claims of no throttling or superior endurance should remain attributed to the company until such testing is available.
Quick Recap
Which tablet should you choose?
Choose Astra 2 if
- OLED contrast and the highest stated refresh rate are priorities.
- You value REDMAGIC’s gaming-focused cooling design, RedCore chip and bypass charging.
- 256GB or 512GB of internal storage is enough, and microSD is not essential.
- You are comfortable buying through REDMAGIC’s regional store after checking warranty, returns and charger terms.
Choose Legion Tab Gen 5 if
- You want microSD expansion, a 3K screen or the larger listed battery.
- Wi-Fi 7 or Lenovo’s retail and Legion ecosystem matters in your country.
- You prefer the device with published Android 16 information over one whose underlying Android version is not clearly stated on the global listing.
- The current local price and support terms make Lenovo the better value for you.
Wait for independent reviews if
- Your decision depends mainly on sustained frame rates, battery endurance or long-session comfort.
- You need a clear software-update commitment, verified game compatibility or evidence about long-term thermals.
- You are concerned about OLED image retention, warranty coverage or accessory fit.
Checks to make before ordering
- Confirm the regional model. A China-market Gaming Tablet 5 Pro import may differ in firmware, wireless bands, Google Play support, languages, included accessories, warranty and return rights from the global Astra 2.
- Verify the final price and configuration. The global launch page shows $699 for 12GB/256GB and $799 for 16GB/512GB, but also displays “from $749.” Check the applicable regional checkout price, taxes and shipping.
- Read the promotion terms. Early access and the advertised gift or charger offer are subject to terms; early access does not guarantee faster shipping, which depends on payment time and stock.
- Check charger and accessory details. Confirm whether a charger is bundled outside the early-bird offer, and verify case or controller fit before buying accessories for the dual-USB-C layout.
- Review warranty and display coverage. The cited product information does not establish a product-specific software-update duration or OLED burn-in warranty policy. Ask the regional seller about coverage before purchase, especially if you play HUD-heavy games for long sessions.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
