That distinction matters. A DLL supplied by an old third-party application should normally remain in that application’s installation directory. It should not be treated like a general-purpose Windows file.
The strongest available metadata identifies the file as Win32, meaning it is intended for a 32-bit application. Some public listings disagree about architecture, so a filename alone is not enough to establish that a replacement file is compatible. The copy delivered with the original application is the safest source.
The reported file description is reference viewer Dynamic Link Library. The commonly indexed metadata also associates the file with older Novell software, but the exact parent product remains uncertain. Do not assume that every program displaying this error is the same application.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “This application failed to start because refvw30.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because refvw30.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file refvw30.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: refvw30.dll. Please install the application again.”

The wording points to different possibilities:
- Not found or missing: The application cannot locate the file where it expects it.

- Specified module could not be found:

Before replacing anything, find out which program is asking for the file.
Record the complete error
Write down:
- The full error text
- The title of the error window
- The application name, if shown
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when opening a particular program
- The application version, if visible
If the message appears while no known program is open, it may come from a leftover startup entry, scheduled task, shortcut, or launcher from software that was recently removed.
Open the application folder
- Find the shortcut that launches the affected application.
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Note the folder path and the name of the main executable.
- In File Explorer, search that folder and its parent folders for
refvw30.dll.
If the DLL is present, do not immediately copy it elsewhere. Its location, file properties, and relationship to the application are useful evidence.
Check the file details
Right-click any existing copy of refvw30.dll, select Properties, and open:

Also check Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
refvw30.dllor the affected application.
If Windows Security quarantined the file, do not restore it blindly. First confirm that the file belongs to the application, then scan the original installer or installation media. If the application is no longer trusted or needed, uninstall it instead of restoring the DLL.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original application
This is the most likely working solution.
Try Windows’ repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 installations.
- Find the application associated with the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
Not every older application provides a repair button. If the repair completes, restart Windows and open the program again.
Use the program’s own installer
If there is no repair option:
- Locate the original installer, installation disc, or official vendor package.
- Close the affected application.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall if offered.
- Allow it to restore the application files and documented prerequisites.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application using its normal shortcut.
If the installer is on removable media, copy it to a local folder first and then run it. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator only when the installation requires elevated permissions.
Uninstall and reinstall when repair fails
If repair does not restore the file:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer again as administrator.
- Restart once more before testing the program.
Back up application data before uninstalling. Older software may store profiles, templates, databases, or configuration files inside its installation folder or user profile.
Do not use a replacement DLL from a download page as a substitute for the installer. The installer may also contain registry entries, configuration files, companion DLLs, and dependencies that a loose file cannot provide.
Fix 3: Check whether the 32-bit application has the right files
Available metadata identifies refvw30.dll as a 32-bit Win32 library. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application files and dependencies.
Do not copy the DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. These folders serve different system roles, and manually placing a third-party file in them can create new conflicts.
The correct location is usually the application’s own folder, unless the original installer uses another documented location. A 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with a 32-bit build simply because both files have the same name.
To check the application architecture:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details and record the product information.
- Check the application documentation or installer for its supported architecture.
If the application is old and the available installer does not work correctly on Windows 10 or Windows 11, compatibility may be the larger problem. Right-click the application executable, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and use Run compatibility troubleshooter. Apply a compatibility setting only if it improves the application’s behavior.

Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
“Could not find the specified module” does not always mean that refvw30.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by the DLL cannot be loaded.
First, reinstall the parent application because its installer should restore the complete group of files.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because the filename looks like a runtime problem. There is no reliable evidence that refvw30.dll itself requires one particular Microsoft runtime. Install or repair a runtime only when the application’s installer or a separate error specifically identifies it.
If the application documentation requires a Visual C++ package, use Microsoft’s official package and match the architecture to the application. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 runtime, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing only an x64 package does not automatically satisfy it.
If you need to inspect Windows optional components:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the enabled Windows features.
- Enable a feature only when the application documentation specifically requires it.
- Restart Windows if Windows asks you to do so.
Do not enable random legacy components as a general DLL repair. Features such as older .NET components may help only when the application actually depends on them.
Fix 5: Check drivers only if the application also shows hardware errors
A driver is not the first suspect for a missing refvw30.dll message. However, if the affected program also crashes with graphics, audio, storage, or device errors, check Device Manager.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Avoid replacing drivers merely because the DLL error appeared. Record the device and driver details first, and roll back a recently installed driver if the problem began immediately afterward.

First install pending Windows updates and restart the computer. Then:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If the commands report that Windows repaired files, test the affected application again. If they report no integrity violations, return to repairing the parent application rather than repeating the commands.

- Search for

- Scan the original installer or installation media.

If the file was downloaded separately, do not restore it simply because its filename matches. A familiar filename does not prove that the file is authentic or safe. Reinstalling from trusted application media is safer.

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose command for installing DLL files. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components.
Only use it when the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register this file.
If that documentation applies, open an elevated Command Prompt and use the command format supplied by the application. Do not guess whether to use the 32-bit or 64-bit version of regsvr32.

If Windows reports that the entry point is missing, that usually means the DLL is not self-registering. It does not mean you should download another copy or keep trying different registration commands.

- The file may contain malware.
- The file may be the wrong version.
- The file may use the wrong architecture.
- The file may have been modified or repackaged.
- The DLL may need other files that are still missing.
- Replacing one file may hide an incomplete installation.
- Copying it into a system folder can affect unrelated programs.
The safe sources are the original application installer, identifiable official vendor media, a trusted organizational software archive, or a backup made from the same working installation. Microsoft’s downloads should be used for Microsoft components and runtimes, not as a source for an unrelated third-party DLL.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Collect this information before seeking further help:
- The complete error message
- The name of the executable that fails
- The full installation path
- Your Windows version and system architecture
- The
refvw30.dllfile properties - Details from the Digital Signatures tab
- Windows Security Protection history
- Any event-log entry created at the time of the failure
- The installer name and source
