Report: Sony’s PlayStation 6 May Have a Detachable Disc Drive

A detachable PS6 disc drive remains an unconfirmed report. Sony’s January 2028 end date for new game-disc production makes a digital-first console plausible, but leaves PS6 hardware and backwards compatibility unknown.

Sony has not confirmed the PlayStation 6 or announced a disc-drive accessory. The claim that PS6 will offer a detachable drive comes from an Insider Gaming report published in September 2025, based on anonymous sources. Sony’s later decision to end production of discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028 makes a digital-first console plausible, but it does not confirm the PS6 design or the future of existing discs.

What the PS6 report claimed

Insider Gaming reportedly heard from several anonymous sources familiar with Sony’s plans that the PlayStation 6 would launch without an integrated disc drive, with a detachable drive sold separately. The arrangement would let buyers start with a digital-focused console and add disc support if they wanted it. Thurrott’s account of the report and NME’s coverage describe the claim and its reported rationale: Sony considered the PS5’s detachable-drive approach successful against internal targets and wanted to reduce manufacturing and shipping costs.

That remains a report, not a Sony announcement. It does not establish the PS6’s price or release date, whether a drive-equipped bundle would be sold, what formats a drive might support, or whether new PS6 games would be released on discs. It also says nothing verified about compatibility with the current PS5 drive.

What Sony has confirmed about physical game discs

On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that it would end production of physical game discs for new games released on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. Sony said games already released, or scheduled for disc release before that date, are not affected. New releases after the cutoff will be distributed through the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats. Sony’s announcement concerns production of new game discs; it does not say existing discs will stop working.

The announcement also does not say that retail stores will disappear from the sales process: digital retail formats may include boxed products with download codes. Nor does it confirm that PS6 will lack a drive accessory or that a future console will read PS4 and PS5 discs.

Why the 2028 cutoff adds context, not confirmation

Rumor coverage often places PS6 around the late-2027 or 2028 period, but Sony has not announced a release date. If the console arrives near the new-disc production cutoff, a digital-first design would fit the distribution direction Sony has announced. A separately sold drive could still matter for older disc libraries or movie playback, even if most new PS6 games are digital.

  • What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Version; Wireless controller; USB cable, HDMI cable, AC power cord. Nogtox PVT HDMI_cable

That is a reasonable inference, not an explanation Sony has given. Sony has not explicitly linked its 2028 disc policy to PS6 hardware. A detachable drive would not, by itself, mean that new PS6 games will continue to ship on discs.

What the PS5 precedent actually shows

Sony already sells a modular disc drive for specific PS5 models. Its current drive is compatible with PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Slim model groups, as well as PS5 Pro. It supports PS5 game discs, supported PS4 game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console during setup. See the official drive listing and PS5 Pro compatibility guide.

PS5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024 without an integrated drive, with the PS5 drive available separately. That is a first-party precedent for a premium PlayStation console sold without built-in disc support; it is not evidence that PS6 will use the same hardware. The module is designed for designated PS5 models, not a generic USB drive. A PS6 accessory could have a different connector, attachment system, pairing process or compatibility policy. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes that model’s disc-less configuration.

What a detachable drive could—and could not—do

“Detachable” describes how a drive connects to a compatible console; it does not tell buyers which discs it can read or which games it can run. For a PS6 drive to make an older game usable, several separate conditions would have to be met:

  • Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
  • PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
  • Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
  • Disc recognition: The hardware must be able to read the disc format.
  • Game compatibility: The console must support running that title. Reading a disc is not the same as supporting its software.
  • License checks: Sony could require an account entitlement or online verification, as the PS5 drive already requires online pairing during setup.
  • Edition and region details: Compatibility, upgrades and downloadable content can vary by game edition or region.
  • Enhancements: A supported older game may simply run; improved performance or graphics would be a separate feature.

Sony says PS5 Pro supports more than 8,500 PS4 games, while noting that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible. That illustrates why it would be unsafe to assume that a future PS6 will play every PS4 or PS5 disc. Sony’s PS5 Pro information and compatibility guidance describe the current generation, not PS6.

What remains unknown

  • Whether Sony will announce PS6 as a shipping product, and its release date, regions and final specifications.
  • The console’s price, the drive’s price, and whether Sony will sell a disc-equipped bundle or a model with an integrated drive.
  • Whether a PS6 drive would read 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, game discs, or some subset of those formats.
  • Whether PS6 would run PS4 or PS5 games from disc, and which titles would be compatible.
  • Whether the current PS5 Slim/Pro drive would fit or authenticate on PS6.
  • Whether the PS6 drive would require online pairing, and whether Sony would continue selling replacements.
  • Whether new games released before January 2028 would receive PS6 disc editions, and how physical retail products would work after the cutoff.

What this means if you own discs or are buying a PS5

There is no verified evidence that the PS5 Disc Drive will work with PS6. It is a model-specific PS5 accessory, and Sony’s compatibility information does not list a PS6. Do not buy one on the assumption that it will carry over.

Choose a current PS5 based on the games and formats you need now. If you own physical PS4 or PS5 games, check that the specific console supports a drive and compare the total console-plus-accessory cost with a model that includes a drive. If you mainly buy digital games, a digital model may suit your current library, but factor in that Sony’s January 2028 policy limits the case for buying a drive solely to access future new game discs.

For a large disc collection, also distinguish the value of keeping those discs usable on a current PS5 from the unconfirmed possibility of using them on PS6. A disc drive can preserve resale, lending, collection and movie-playback options on compatible hardware; none of those benefits guarantees PS6 support. If you do not urgently need a console, waiting for Sony to publish PS6 specifications and compatibility details is the only way to make that purchase with confirmed information.

Why Sony might choose a separate drive

The cost and logistics rationale was part of the original report, not a confirmed Sony explanation for PS6. A digital-first base model could reduce console manufacturing complexity, packaging volume and shipping weight, while giving buyers who need physical media a separate upgrade path. Selling the accessory separately could also create a higher-margin add-on, but that is analysis rather than a stated Sony motive.

The trade-off is that the advertised base price would not be the complete price for disc users. Buyers could face a separate accessory cost, limited availability or setup requirements, while new physical releases may no longer exist after the 2028 cutoff. In that scenario, a drive’s main value could be legacy games and movies rather than new PS6 purchases.
