ReShade and ENB at a glance
| Question | ReShade | ENBSeries |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A general-purpose graphics injector for post-processing. | A game- and engine-oriented graphics modification framework with separate builds for supported titles. |
| Best at | Color grading, sharpening, anti-aliasing, and other finishing effects across different games. | More integrated lighting and rendering changes in a supported game. |
| Compatibility | Supports Direct3D 9–12, OpenGL, and Vulkan, though individual games can still present conflicts. | Title-specific; the official site offers different versions and configurations for particular games or engines. |
| Setup | Usually simpler: select the game executable and graphics API in the setup tool. | Usually more manual: match the build to the game, place files correctly, and follow preset-specific requirements. |
| Performance | Depends on the effects and settings enabled. | Graphics modifications generally reduce frame rate; the amount depends on the build and setup. |
| A sensible default | Players seeking flexibility and image polish. | Players following a maintained, game-specific overhaul. |
These are different kinds of tools, not interchangeable versions of the same feature. ReShade’s official site describes a post-processing injector with a shader system; ENBSeries distributes game-specific modifications and documentation. See ReShade and ENBSeries downloads.
How they change a game’s image
ReShade: post-process the rendered image
ReShade applies shader effects to the rendered image, and can use depth information where available. Its ReShade FX shaders can provide color correction, contrast and saturation changes, sharpening, SMAA, bloom, film grain, chromatic aberration, depth of field, multi-pass blur, tonemapping, and ambient-occlusion-style effects. The official site lists support for Direct3D 9, 10, 11, and 12, OpenGL, and Vulkan. The current version shown there is 6.7.3, released February 28, 2026; it lists Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11 and .NET Framework 4.8 as requirements. Details are on the official ReShade site.
Because ReShade works largely on the image after the game renders it, it is especially useful for presentation: balancing color, adding crispness, or creating a cinematic look. It does not, simply by applying a filter, add new geometry, light sources, or physically based materials to the game.

ENB: a game-specific rendering modification
ENBSeries provides separate downloads and configurations for supported games. Depending on the title and build, it can affect rendering more deeply than a general post-processing injector, with options associated with lighting, weather, shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections, volumetric effects, and material appearance. Its documentation distinguishes graphic modifications from patches that may address game-specific crashes, bugs, stuttering, or compatibility, and from converters that translate older graphics APIs. The exact features depend on the specific game build and configuration; the ENB download page and Skyrim engine documentation provide title-specific details.
More integration does not automatically mean a more realistic or attractive result. An ENB preset can produce crushed shadows, excessive bloom, or strong color casts; a ReShade preset can introduce oversharpening, halos, banding, or artificial-looking depth effects. Judge the image you actually want, not just how much of the rendering path a tool can affect.
Which gives better image quality?
- For color and tone: ReShade is a strong choice for contrast, saturation, color grading, tonemapping, and sharpening. Its presets can often be adapted between games, although effects that rely on depth may need game-specific tuning.
- For anti-aliasing and finishing: ReShade can add effects such as SMAA, sharpening, and filmic adjustments. These improve the presentation of the final image, not the underlying game assets.
- For lighting and weather integration: ENB is often the more capable option in a supported game with a suitable preset and compatible weather or lighting mods. Preset results vary with those dependencies.
- For depth effects: Both approaches can produce effects such as depth of field or ambient-occlusion-style shading, but implementation and quality differ by shader, game, and configuration. Such effects may be costly or visually imperfect.
- For reflections, materials, and volumetric effects: ENB may offer more integrated controls in titles where its build supports them. Confirm the chosen build and preset actually include the feature you want.
“Better image quality” can mean a more pleasing grade, more convincing lighting, closer adherence to the game’s original art direction, or a sharper image at a playable frame rate. Decide which of those matters most before installing a preset.

Performance: compare presets, not labels
Neither tool has a universal frame-rate advantage. ReShade’s cost depends on the enabled shaders, their quality settings, and output resolution. Simple color adjustments and sharpening are generally less demanding than complex multi-pass or depth-based effects, but exact cost varies by implementation. ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance recommends adjusting shader quality and parameters such as resolution and sample count when performance suffers (ReShade troubleshooting FAQ).
ENB’s documentation says graphics modifications decrease frame rate in most cases. The impact depends on the build, preset, game, resolution, shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections, volumetrics, weather or lighting mods, and whether the system is GPU- or CPU-limited (ENBSeries downloads and guidance). An elaborate ReShade stack can be slower than a restrained ENB configuration, or the reverse; compare the actual setups you intend to use.
Make a useful before-and-after comparison
For a fair test, use the same game version, save, location, camera angle, time of day, weather, resolution, and upscaling settings. Record your hardware and driver, then compare a clean baseline against one tool at a time. Add or remove effects individually and watch average frame rate, 1% lows, frametime consistency, and stutter—not just a single FPS reading. Those results describe your configuration, not every player’s.

Compatibility and multiplayer rules
ReShade has the broader general-purpose reach because it supports several major graphics APIs. That does not guarantee compatibility with every game: launchers, overlays, anti-cheat, unusual render paths, DXVK, Proton/Wine layers, or game updates may interfere. ENB is more limited to the games and engines for which a build is provided. The ENB site notes that many newer builds are hardcoded for a particular game or closely related titles, rather than being universal.
Do not assume an injector is permitted in an online game. ReShade says depth access is automatically disabled during multiplayer, but that is not a guarantee that a game’s anti-cheat or rules allow ReShade itself. Policies are game-specific: Facepunch says Rust banned ReShade use beginning January 13, 2025 (Rust support). Check the current rules for the particular game before launching with an injector.
Installation and removal
Install ReShade
- Download the installer from the official ReShade site.
- Run the setup tool and select the game’s actual executable, not just a launcher shortcut.
- Select the graphics API the game uses. Choosing the wrong executable or API can leave the overlay missing or the effects inactive.
- Choose shader packages, then launch the game and open the ReShade overlay using its configured hotkey.
- Select or create a preset, enable effects selectively, and use performance mode after configuration to avoid unnecessary shader-variable processing.
The standard ReShade build and the separate full add-on-support build are not identical. Add-ons provide capabilities beyond ordinary shader presets; the full add-on-support build is unsigned, so users who only need image effects should not assume they need it. ReShade’s add-on API was introduced in version 5.0; see its version 5.0 release notes.

Install ENB
- Identify the exact game edition and find its build on the ENB download page.
- Read the included description and the relevant game documentation before copying files.
- Extract the required files into the directory containing the game executable or relevant game DLLs. Do not put ENB’s
d3d8.dllord3d9.dllin the Windows system folder. - Check whether that particular build requires legacy DirectX runtime files; some older builds may require files such as
d3dx9_26.dll,d3dx9_40.dll, ord3dx9_43.dll. - First confirm the base ENB build works. Then install a preset and its required weather, lighting, or other dependencies, following their version and load-order instructions.
- Change configuration files cautiously and test the game after each major change.
Before either installation, keep a copy of the original game-folder files. To remove ReShade, delete or rename its installed DLL and configuration files; to remove ENB, remove its files from the game directory and restore the original DLL arrangement. If the game no longer launches, return to that clean baseline before testing another build. These tools can conflict with other injectors, so establish that one works alone before adding another.

Skyrim
Skyrim is the clearest case where “ReShade or ENB?” is not the whole decision. ENB has dedicated versions for Skyrim, Special Edition, and VR, and a long-established preset ecosystem. ReShade remains useful for final-image polish. For engine-integrated rendering features, consider Community Shaders, an open-source SKSE-based framework whose listing covers Skyrim Special Edition, Anniversary Edition, and VR. Its listed features include shader caching and asynchronous compilation, terrain improvements, lighting and material features, and other rendering changes. Check the exact edition, feature module, and mod-list compatibility before installation (Community Shaders description).
Version labels need care: the listing records core Community Shaders 1.4.11 updated April 13, 2026, while later file listings show 1.7.x files in June 2026. Feature-module versions and core-mod versions are not necessarily the same. Check the file listing for the version relevant to the feature you plan to use.

- Choose ReShade for a lightweight finishing pass focused on the final image.
- Choose ENB for a supported setup built around a mature, deeply integrated preset.
- Consider Community Shaders for Skyrim-specific engine integration and its available rendering features.
Community Shaders is not simply a faster ReShade: it is a game-specific framework with its own dependencies and compatibility constraints. A separate Skyrim upscaling module advertises DLSS 4, FSR 3.1 upscaling, and FSR frame generation; those claims apply to that integration, not to ReShade or ENB generally (upscaling module description). Open Shaders is another Community Shaders fork; its page says to install it instead of Community Shaders, not alongside it (Open Shaders).
Fallout and GTA
Both tool choices depend on the exact title and edition. ReShade may suit color and sharpening across a range of games, while ENB can be attractive where an appropriate game-specific build and maintained preset are available. Check the ENB download page and preset instructions for the precise game version rather than assuming one build covers a series. Treat mod, weather, and injector dependencies as part of the choice.
Older DirectX, Vulkan, and VR games
ReShade supports Vulkan and multiple Direct3D versions, but installation details and results remain game-specific. Some older games may need a wrapper such as DXGL or dgVoodoo2 when their original API is unsupported; this is an advanced workaround, not a guaranteed fix (ReShade troubleshooting FAQ). VR support and behavior likewise vary by game and setup. Confirm the exact title’s instructions before installing either tool.
Can you use ReShade and ENB together?
Sometimes, but do not begin with both. Combining injectors can cause DLL-loading conflicts, broken depth buffers, overlay or menu problems, duplicated bloom or sharpening, and additional GPU load. A preset may also assume that the other tool is absent.
Recommended Free Tools
- Get a stable game running with ENB or ReShade alone, and keep a clean backup.
- Add the second tool only if the chosen preset or game-specific instructions explicitly support the combination.
- Disable duplicate effects and test menus, cutscenes, interiors, exteriors, and alt-tab behavior.
- If crashes or visual corruption begin, remove the second injector and return to the working single-tool setup.
Licensing and safe downloads
Download ReShade from its official site and avoid unofficial bundles containing unknown DLLs or modified injectors. ReShade is open source under the BSD 3-Clause license; the project repository provides its source. Its site warns against redistributing its binaries or shader files; link readers to the official download instead.
ENBSeries is described by its author as freeware/donateware and has its own terms. Its license prohibits third-party distribution of the author-created binary files through download-manager software, while allowing sale of presets, shaders, bitmaps, and documentation under the stated terms. Preset assets may have separate rights, so follow each creator’s distribution rules (ENBSeries license).
Quick Recap
Choose by goal, then verify the exact game
- One enhancer for many games: Start with ReShade, provided the game and its online rules allow it.
- Color, contrast, sharpening, or a cinematic filter: Start with ReShade and add effects gradually.
- Deep visual changes in a supported game: Look for a current ENB build and a maintained preset with matching dependencies.
- Modern Skyrim rendering features: Compare ENB with Community Shaders for your exact edition and mod list.
- Limited GPU headroom: Begin with a clean baseline and test only the effects you value; neither product guarantees a low-cost result.
- Online multiplayer: Check the game’s current anti-cheat policy before installing or enabling an injector.
