If Resident Evil 4 (2023) crashes on a Windows PC, start by checking the game’s requirements, then work through software, GPU, Steam-file, and background-app checks. The steps below target common causes, but Capcom does not identify one universal cause or guarantee that a single fix will resolve every crash.
Check whether your PC meets the game’s requirements
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit as the minimum operating system and Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit as recommended. Compare the rest of your system with the current Steam requirements before changing settings.

Steam estimates 1080p at 45 fps on minimum hardware using Prioritize Performance, and 1080p at 60 fps on recommended hardware; it notes frame-rate drops may occur in graphics-intensive scenes. These specifications are a compatibility screen, not proof that a particular component causes a crash. Capcom says it does not warrant or officially support normal PC operation below the minimum requirements. It also notes that some powerful integrated graphics and modern laptop GPUs may work, but are not tested or officially supported.
If your PC meets minimum but not recommended specs
Capcom suggests lowering graphics settings when a PC falls between minimum and recommended requirements. Change demanding settings first, then restart the game if prompted or if the setting requires it. Do not assume that lowering settings will correct a crash unrelated to system load.
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Work through general crash checks
1. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install available Windows updates and update the graphics driver using the GPU maker’s or PC manufacturer’s supported method. Capcom notes that outdated graphics drivers can contribute to graphics problems or prevent the game from starting; there is no single driver version established as best for every system.
2. Make sure a laptop uses its dedicated GPU
If your laptop has both integrated and discrete graphics, set the game to use the dedicated or high-performance GPU in the graphics vendor’s current software or Windows graphics settings. Menu names vary by device and driver, so use the manufacturer’s current instructions. Connect the laptop to power and check that its power mode or plan is not restricting performance.

- Intense horror experience with dark narrative

- Players take on the role of Leon S Kennedy
- Mission to save the president's daughter from danger
- Challenging environments and strategic combat scenarios await
3. Review antivirus exclusions
Security software can sometimes mistakenly block a game executable. If you suspect that is happening, check the security software’s alerts and consider adding the legitimate game and Steam installation files to its exceptions or exclusions, following Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance. Do not disable protection broadly or exclude files from an untrusted source.
4. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Resident Evil 4 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam complete the check and repair, then try launching the game again.
Steam may report a validation issue involving local configuration files; Capcom says this can be normal. Do not delete unfamiliar files manually as a substitute for verification.

5. Close unnecessary background applications
Close apps you do not need while playing, especially recording or capture software and other resource-heavy programs. Capcom warns that these can consume CPU, GPU, memory, or I/O bandwidth and affect performance or stability. Test after closing them so you can tell whether the change made a difference.
Match the check to the symptom
Crashes or problems during cutscenes
If the game launches and the problem is specifically cutscene video playback, check whether Windows media components or codecs are installed. Windows N editions and some regional editions may not include media features by default; the relevant component is the Media Feature Pack. This is a targeted check for video playback trouble, not a general remedy for crashes.
Rank #4
Flickering or a blank display
For flicker or a blank screen, check the game’s display refresh-rate and V-Sync settings, along with the monitor’s configuration. Capcom associates these settings with display problems; they should not be treated as a universal crash fix.

If the checks do not resolve the issue, preserve the CrashReport folder. Capcom says it is created in the default game installation directory in most crash cases. Include its ZIP files when possible, and provide enough detail for support to understand when and how the failure occurs.

- As consciousness returns and you blink shadows from your eyes, all you can hear is the ringing in your ears. At first, you think it might be from the bells, as you recall racing through the Clock Tower in search of gears to sound the great bell.
- Then the blood drains from your face as the memories begin to surface. You thought you’d escaped Raccoon City. But it isn’t over yet.
- Continue your desperate escape with 11 hours of new gameplay, nine gripping new scenarios, three terrifying new enemy types, and two large-and-lethal bosses.
- This expansion will drastically change the course of your Resident Evil 3: The Board Game campaign, taking you beyond the built-up city streets to brand new locations plagued by new enemies.
- But new enemies aren’t your only threat. To move forward, you must adapt to new gameplay mechanics introduced by the changed environment. Creep silently through the City Hospital. Wade through flood water in the City Park.
