At first glance, this is a backwards remake argument: Resident Evil 5 is the older game, so why spare it while welcoming a remake of Resident Evil 6? Because RE5 has a clear cooperative identity built around Chris and Sheva, while RE6’s sprawling mix of campaigns and multiplayer modes leaves more room for a redesign. That is a case for preserving what makes one game distinctive and rethinking what makes the other unwieldy—not a claim about what Capcom plans to do.
Why leave Resident Evil 5 alone?
Resident Evil 5 is not just a sequence of Chris Redfield’s action set-pieces. Its defining structure is a partnership: Chris and Sheva move through the game together, with the Xbox 360 manual documenting both local split-screen and online co-op. Capcom’s series retrospective notes that online co-op was first added to RE5 before appearing in RE6 and other entries. That history makes the partnership more than a feature bolted onto the side; it is a central part of the game’s identity.
For me, that identity is also why a remake risks losing more than it gains. A modernized version could update controls, visuals, or individual encounters, but redesigning the campaign around a different rhythm or a single-player experience could make the two-character structure feel incidental. The original’s co-op can shape how players approach danger, share resources, and keep moving. That is a particular play style, and I would rather see it preserved than replaced by a remake that treats RE5 as a generic action-horror game.
There is a reasonable counterargument: a remake could keep Chris and Sheva while reworking the campaign around them. But the burden should be on the remake to preserve the partnership as the organising principle, not merely retain Sheva as a companion while changing the experience into something else. Capcom’s manual establishes the original’s co-op options; it does not establish what a hypothetical remake would do.

Why Resident Evil 6 has more room to change
RE6 offers a different design problem. Its campaign has co-op, and its story intersections can bring up to four players together. The manual also documents Agent Hunt, which lets a player enter another campaign as an enemy. Those systems show how many different multiplayer ideas the game tries to accommodate.
That breadth can be a source of variety, but I think it also makes RE6 a stronger candidate for reinterpretation. A remake could choose a clearer structure, make its campaigns feel more deliberately connected, or decide which multiplayer ideas best serve the experience. Those are possibilities, not confirmed Capcom intentions. The argument is simply that RE6 has more design sprawl to reconsider, whereas RE5’s cooperative partnership is the thing I most want protected.

Re-releases are not remakes
Capcom has reissued both games, but those releases should not be confused with remakes. In 2016, Capcom announced an HD release of RE5 for PS4 and Xbox One, naming the combined Mercenaries United mode. Capcom also announced RE6 for those consoles with previously released console multiplayer and Mercenaries content. These announcements document re-releases and included content; they do not confirm a remake or a remake plan.

There is no official confirmation or rejection of a remake for either game established here. So the title’s position is a critical preference, not a report of Capcom’s intentions or a claim that players broadly agree. Capcom’s RE5 HD release announcement and RE6 console release announcement describe the releases without establishing remakes.

RE5’s defining two-character co-op gives it something specific I would protect; RE6’s wider and more varied structure gives a remake more to reconsider. Neither judgment is a fact about which game is objectively better. It is a distinction about where I see the greater risk of losing an identity—and where I see the greater opportunity to reshape one.
