Why choose Resident Evil 5 for co-op?
RE5 is the more straightforward recommendation when the main goal is to play a two-person campaign together. Its co-op is supported both online and locally, though the local setup depends on platform: Capcom’s console manuals document split-screen, and Capcom added local split-screen to the Steam PC version on February 27, 2023. Capcom’s Steam announcement is important context for older PC advice that says the Steam version has no local split-screen.
That makes RE5 the safer fit for a pair who want the co-op campaign itself to be the point, rather than a sprawling set of separate storylines. This is a recommendation about fit, not a measured finding that RE5 is objectively better or that it is shorter.

Why choose Resident Evil 6 for co-op?
RE6 offers more structural variety: its story is divided into four interwoven threads, and Steam describes two-player co-op across them. Capcom’s manual documents offline split-screen, while official documentation and Steam also describe online co-op. The exception is Ada Wong’s campaign, which Steam lists as one-player only. That breadth comes with a deliberately extravagant action style. PC Gamer writer Robert Zak, in an article updated March 4, 2026, wrote: “Resident Evil 6 turns into one of the most enjoyable co-op games I’ve played in recent memory.” That is one reviewer’s personal assessment, not a measured comparison or general consensus. Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 console manual documents cooperative play, including split-screen and online modes. For Steam PC, local split-screen was added in the February 27, 2023 update; check that your particular edition and setup match the feature you intend to use.

- Pick Resident Evil 5 if you primarily want a focused two-player campaign, especially if you value a direct co-op recommendation over a larger story structure.
- Pick Resident Evil 6 if your pair wants four connected story threads and welcomes a more chaotic action spectacle; remember that Ada’s campaign is solo.
