For one YouTube landscape stream, Restream’s documented simultaneous landscape-and-portrait setup is not required. Restream describes adding a YouTube channel through account authorization and says you must own the channel; being a manager or editor is not enough. Which setup makes sense for your channel?
Choose OBS direct to YouTube if YouTube is the only destination
If your broadcast only needs to reach YouTube, OBS can provide the encoder workflow without adding Restream as a distribution layer. That is a workflow distinction, not evidence that OBS produces better video or is inherently more reliable. The continuous broadcast still depends on the computer, network, power, YouTube, and any services in the path.
Add Restream when multistream distribution matters
Restream’s clearest documented role in this comparison is sending software output such as OBS to multiple platforms. You can therefore use OBS and Restream together rather than treating them as mutually exclusive alternatives. Confirm that the destinations and operating method you need are supported by your chosen Restream setup.

For a hands-off YouTube loop, consider a cloud service

Continuous delivery is not the same as a saved replay
YouTube’s official encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a 24/7 signal will produce one complete automatically saved replay; plan separately for whether you need an archive and how you will preserve the material.

Restream discloses a possible maintenance restart
Restream says it does not limit stream duration, but warns that the server in use may undergo maintenance and restart after a stream has run continuously for more than 24 hours. It suggests restarting every 24 hours to prevent potential issues. This is vendor guidance, not a report that every stream will be interrupted or a guarantee that daily restarts eliminate outages. Plan for interruptions regardless of the workflow
The cited documentation does not establish uninterrupted availability or failover guarantees for either setup. For a local encoder, the computer and network must remain operational; with a service layer, service maintenance and platform behavior also matter. Decide who will monitor the broadcast, how quickly they can respond, and what should happen if the stream stops.

Set up an OBS-to-YouTube stream
These are the essential workflow steps rather than a promise of a particular current OBS screen layout. YouTube account eligibility and live activation must be in place before you rely on the stream.
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. Restream’s YouTube setup page says first-time streaming requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait after activation. It also says you need to own the channel to add it through Restream. Check the channel’s live status ahead of your planned launch rather than beginning setup at airtime.
- Create or open the YouTube live stream settings. In YouTube Studio, create the intended live event or configure the stream, then copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service when available, and use the account connection or stream-key method offered by your current setup. If you use a key, paste the matching YouTube key and keep it private.
- Configure the video and audio source. Add the intended prerecorded media or production sources in OBS, set the canvas and output resolution to match your content and connection, and check that audio is present and correctly routed before going live. A resolution or bitrate should be chosen for the actual upload capacity and the platform’s current limits; the cited sources do not establish a single universal bitrate for every resolution or account.
- Test before committing to a long run. Start a private or unlisted test where appropriate, confirm that YouTube receives a stable picture and sound, and inspect OBS for dropped frames. Verify that the source continues as intended; a successful short test does not establish that a machine or service will run continuously without interruption.
- For Restream distribution, connect the service between OBS and destinations. Add and authorize the YouTube channel in Restream, then configure OBS to send its output to Restream using the connection details provided in your account. Add only the other platforms you actually need and test each destination. Restream’s channel-ownership requirement applies when adding YouTube through its authorization flow.
Stabilize the local setup and diagnose dropped frames
Use wired networking where practical
OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide says Wi-Fi can be unstable and recommends a wired connection. An Ethernet cable, including Cat6 where suitable, can connect the computer to the router; it cannot prevent an ISP outage, router failure, power loss, computer failure, or a platform interruption.

Lower bitrate when the connection cannot sustain it
OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a bitrate that exceeds what the connection can sustain. Its guidance gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate—not a universal rule. Available capacity can vary, and the service’s current limits still apply. If frames drop, reduce bitrate and test again rather than assuming a higher setting is better.
Use this troubleshooting checklist
- Dropped frames or an unstable ingest connection: lower the bitrate, test the connection, and use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi where practical, following OBS’s troubleshooting guidance.
- YouTube does not accept the broadcast: check that live streaming has been enabled, the first-time activation wait has passed, and the correct current stream key is configured. If using Restream authorization, confirm the account owns the channel.
- Only one destination receives video: check the destination configuration in the distribution service and test each platform independently. A direct OBS-to-YouTube setup does not itself provide multistream distribution.
- The broadcast stops during a long run: identify whether the interruption came from the local computer or connection, YouTube, or a service in the path. Restream specifically warns of possible server maintenance restarts after more than 24 continuous hours; its suggested daily restart is preventive guidance, not a guarantee.
- The replay is incomplete or missing as one long archive: distinguish the live signal from the saved replay. YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage is for streams under 12 hours, so do not rely on a 24/7 event producing one complete replay.
Copyright, source material, and channel rules
Before leaving a long-running stream unattended, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track, image, and other element in the broadcast. A stream that remains online can still face copyright claims or platform enforcement. Review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization directly; the sources cited here do not establish the status of any particular recording or guarantee that reused material qualifies for monetization.
