Then test YouTube directly, reconnect the channel and reset its stream key if needed, and check the connection path, encoder and upload capacity. Work through those layers in order rather than changing every setting at once.
First identify where the connection is failing
A stream can fail at several points: YouTube may not allow the channel or event to go live, Restream’s authorization may be stale, the encoder may not reach Restream, or a firewall or unstable connection may interrupt traffic. Note which screen shows “Connecting” or whether the encoder reports that it is sending data but the stream never appears on YouTube. That clue helps you choose the next check.
Check YouTube channel eligibility and the event
- Confirm live streaming is enabled. Restream says a channel needs live streaming enabled. For a channel’s first live stream, its setup guide says the channel must be phone verified and wait 24 hours after enabling the feature. If YouTube reports that live streaming is not enabled, resolve that with YouTube before changing encoder settings. - Check how the event was created. An event created through YouTube’s mobile app is for mobile streaming only. Restream warns that trying to send an external stream to that event will fail. Create or select an event that accepts an encoder instead. Restream Help Center: My stream doesn’t start on YouTube.
Test whether YouTube or Restream is the problem
Try going live on YouTube without Restream. If that direct test also fails, the issue may be on YouTube’s side; Restream advises contacting YouTube support if it persists. If the direct test works, focus next on the Restream channel connection, encoder configuration or the network path to Restream. Restream Help Center: My stream doesn’t start on YouTube.
Reconnect YouTube and reset the stream key
If the channel was previously connected but now fails, Restream’s recovery steps are to remove and re-add the YouTube channel and reset the key in YouTube Studio:

- In Restream, remove the YouTube channel from your connected channels.
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream settings and reset the stream key.
- Return to Restream and add the YouTube channel again, completing the authorization or setup.
- Retry the stream using the refreshed connection and key.
Resetting a key invalidates the old one, so update any encoder that uses it before trying again. Follow Restream’s current channel-reconnection instructions if the labels differ in your account. Restream Help Center: My stream doesn’t start on YouTube.
If Restream itself stays on “Connecting,” check network access
Firewall, network or web security gateway rules can prevent a connection. The ports depend on the streaming method, so ask your network administrator to check only the requirements for the path you use. Restream lists these requirements: Restream Help Center: Network requirements for Restream.

Do not open unrelated ports as a general fix. The relevant requirement depends on whether you are using Studio, an RTMP/RTMPS encoder, SRT or browser-based traffic.
For OBS, confirm the Restream account and server
In OBS, check that the selected service is configured for the Restream account and stream you intend to use. Restream supports connecting OBS by authorizing an account or by entering a Restream RTMP stream key manually; OBS can autodetect the server or let you select one. Match encoder settings to YouTube and your upload speed
Restream lists H.264 video, CBR rate control and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommendations. It gives a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. Its bitrate table recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are vendor-published configuration recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will connect. - Use a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you selected.
- Restream recommends that the stream bitrate not exceed half of your available upload speed. If your connection cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate or video settings and try again.
- Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds where possible, and within Restream’s stated four-second maximum.
Use Ethernet if the connection is unstable
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi and suspect instability, try a wired Ethernet connection where your device and network support it. Restream recommends Ethernet as a stability measure. It will not fix a disabled YouTube live feature, a mobile-only event, an expired key or a firewall rule blocking the stream.
