Short answer: choose Restreamer when your VPS needs to receive an already-encoded stream and forward it to YouTube. Choose OBS Studio when you need to build scenes, combine sources, add overlays, or control encoding—and first verify that the Linux VPS can provide OBS’s graphics and display requirements. They can also be combined, though the surfaced OBS-to-Restreamer guide is for deprecated Restreamer 0.6.x.
Neither software choice nor a VPS plan’s advertised CPU, RAM, or bandwidth establishes that a particular setup will stay live for 24/7. Validate the exact stream workload and check the provider’s current terms for continuous outbound RTMP streaming.
What Restreamer and OBS each do
OBS Studio produces and encodes a stream
OBS is the better fit when you need scene composition, overlays, source mixing, or direct control over encoding. On Linux/Unix, OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X11 or Wayland display server as requirements. A low-cost headless VPS may not provide these by default, even if its advertised CPU and memory look sufficient. Verify the instance’s graphics, display, and encoder arrangement before choosing OBS.
Restreamer receives and forwards a stream
datarhei Restreamer is a self-hosted streaming server with an official Docker image. Its project documentation describes receiving video from OBS and publishing to YouTube. For a VPS whose job is to relay an existing encoded feed, its Docker deployment is the clearer fit; do not assume it replaces OBS’s scene-building features. datarhei recommends its official Docker images to avoid dependency and installation issues: Official Recommendations.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
They can be combined
A historical Restreamer guide describes OBS sending an RTMP feed to Restreamer, which then forwards it to YouTube. That guide applies to Restreamer 0.6.x and is explicitly deprecated, so treat it as background on the architecture rather than current setup instructions. Check the current Restreamer documentation for the procedure that matches your version.
Which should you choose?
| Need | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Forward an already-encoded stream from a VPS to YouTube | Restreamer | Current Docker deployment and ingest/forwarding configuration |
| Create scenes, overlays, or a mix of video sources | OBS | Linux display and graphics support, plus encoding performance on the actual VPS |
| Produce scenes and also use a server-side ingest or forwarding layer | OBS and Restreamer together | Current integration steps; the surfaced Restreamer OBS guide is deprecated |
Restreamer’s project says there are no ongoing license costs; the VPS, outbound transfer, and any support still cost money. OBS may suit production needs better, but its Linux graphics and display requirements make an unverified headless VPS a risky place to run it.

Set YouTube-compatible encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance as the compatibility baseline rather than copying settings wholesale from an older Restreamer guide. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, supports H.264 video, specifies CBR bitrate encoding, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency (and says not to exceed four seconds), and lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Consult its live encoder settings for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate.
The deprecated Restreamer 0.6.x guide gives 2500–3000 Kbps as an example for Full HD. That is an old guide’s example, not a current universal recommendation: use YouTube’s bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream.

Estimate transfer before choosing an Indian VPS
A continuous stream can use a substantial amount of outbound data. Estimate it from the selected bitrate and intended hours, then compare it with the VPS plan’s transfer allowance and overage terms. Allow for protocol overhead and bitrate peaks; a headline network speed or a large monthly traffic allowance does not guarantee stable sustained streaming.
For a rough estimate, convert the video and audio bitrate to megabits per second, multiply by streaming hours, then divide by eight to estimate gigabytes before overhead. For example, at 3 Mbps, 24 hours is about 32.4 GB of data (3 × 24 × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000); a 30-day month at that rate is about 972 GB. Treat this as an estimate, not a provider measurement, and include any other traffic from the instance.

Read the full plan terms, not only the advertised resources
Hostinger’s India VPS page, accessed in 2026, advertises KVM 1 with 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe storage, and 4 TB bandwidth at an introductory ₹599/month, with renewal at ₹999/month for a two-year term. These are provider-advertised specifications and prices, not evidence that the plan can run OBS or sustain a 24/7 stream. Hostinger describes its VPS as self-managed and providing root access; check the current India VPS terms before purchasing.
Regional transfer allowances can differ. AWS says Mumbai-region Lightsail bundles include half the data transfer allowance shown in its general bundle tables. Compare the selected region’s allowance and any overages, not just a headline figure; see Lightsail pricing.

Validate a 24/7 setup before relying on it
No cited source establishes uninterrupted 24/7 performance for OBS or Restreamer on a low-cost Indian VPS, or confirms that a particular provider permits continuous outbound RTMP traffic. Run a representative soak test with the actual input, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate before depending on the setup.
- Confirm permission and terms. Check the provider’s current acceptable-use policy and any outbound transfer or overage conditions for the intended continuous stream.
- Use the intended production workload. Test the actual video source, chosen software, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings—not a lighter substitute.
- Monitor for the full test. Watch CPU and memory pressure, dropped frames, network transfer, disconnects, and reconnect behavior. For OBS, also verify the display and encoder path on the selected Linux instance.
- Check recovery. Observe what happens after a stream interruption or process restart, and confirm that the workflow returns to the intended YouTube stream.
- Recheck the economics. Compare measured transfer use with the plan allowance and overage terms, and include renewal pricing rather than relying only on an introductory offer.
Common problems and what to check
- OBS will not start or has no usable display: confirm that the Linux instance has the required OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X11 or Wayland setup. A headless VPS does not automatically meet those requirements.
- Frames drop or the stream becomes unstable: check CPU and memory pressure, encoder behavior, the VPS network path, and the actual stream bitrate. Advertised bandwidth alone does not establish sustained performance.
- YouTube rejects or fails to ingest the feed: verify that the selected protocol and codec are compatible with YouTube’s current guidance, and check CBR, keyframe frequency, audio format, and the bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Transfer use approaches the plan limit: recalculate from the actual bitrate and hours, including overhead and other instance traffic; check regional allowance and overage terms.
- The setup reconnects poorly after an interruption: test restart and reconnect behavior under the intended workflow instead of assuming a VPS or streaming application guarantees automatic recovery.
- The provider questions the traffic: review its current acceptable-use terms and ask the provider whether continuous outbound RTMP streaming is permitted.
