For a self-hosted setup that publishes to YouTube, Restreamer is the more directly documented fit. Its Publication Service guide describes sending a source to YouTube. Owncast is built to receive an encoder’s RTMP broadcast and serve its own stream; the official documentation reviewed here does not establish native YouTube publishing. To use Owncast and YouTube together, plan on a separate restreaming workflow and verify that configuration.
Neither product’s documentation establishes a comparative uptime winner. An always-on channel depends on the source, encoder, network, host and publishing process all staying available.
Restreamer vs Owncast at a glance
| Question | Restreamer | Owncast |
|---|---|---|
| Primary fit | Self-hosted video source published to YouTube through its Publication Service. Restreamer’s YouTube guide | Self-hosted RTMP ingest and streaming service for an Owncast audience. The reviewed official setup documentation does not establish native YouTube forwarding. Owncast quick start |
| YouTube workflow | Enter a valid YouTube streaming ID in the Publication Service, save and start publishing. Restreamer’s YouTube guide | Receive an encoder broadcast at the server’s /live/ endpoint. A separate relay or publishing path is needed if YouTube is also a destination. Owncast quick start |
| Operational emphasis | Keep the container, source, network and publication service available; public access may require port forwarding. Restreamer quick start | Keep the server and RTMP ingest reachable, and configure Owncast as a background process or system service. Owncast quick start |
| Documented uptime comparison | Not stated; the documentation does not provide a comparative uptime measurement. | Not stated; the documentation does not provide a comparative uptime measurement. |
Choose based on the channel you want to run
Choose Restreamer when YouTube is the main destination
Restreamer’s documented YouTube path is comparatively direct: select its Publication Service, provide the YouTube streaming ID, save and start the stream. That makes it the clearer match when the objective is to publish a self-hosted source to YouTube rather than build a separate hosted viewing destination. The YouTube publication guide is the relevant reference for the current workflow.
Choose Owncast when you want to host the viewing destination
Owncast receives a broadcast from encoder software over RTMP and makes the stream available through its own service. The setup guide describes the server endpoint and notes broad RTMP software compatibility, while cautioning that not every configuration has been tested. If YouTube must also receive the stream, treat that as a second publishing path: the reviewed Owncast documentation does not show a native YouTube destination. See Owncast’s setup guide.

Consider a cloud-run YouTube service for less home-server operations
For a YouTube-only always-on stream, StreamNeo is the first option to consider when you want uploaded videos looped from the cloud: it stays on with the computer off, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.
What an always-on self-hosted setup has to keep running
Neither option makes a channel independent of its source or infrastructure. For a self-hosted route, identify each component that must stay available and how it will recover after a fault.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Source and encoder: The video source and process sending it must remain available. With Owncast, the encoder sends RTMP to the server; with Restreamer, the source and Publication Service must be working.
- Host supervision: Restreamer’s quick start describes running its Docker container. Owncast’s installation guidance says to run it as a background process or system service for persistent operation. A manual launch in an interactive terminal is not equivalent to a supervised always-on service.
- Network exposure: Public-facing Restreamer functionality may require port forwarding. Owncast’s web interface and RTMP ingest ports must be reachable for external use. Expose only the services needed and secure the host according to its operating environment.
- Internet connection: Owncast recommends wired Ethernet for stream stability. It is a practical setup choice, not a software requirement.
- Recovery plan: Decide how the source, service and publishing connection will be restarted after a reboot or interruption. The documentation describes setup, not a comparative uptime guarantee.
Bandwidth, audience size and video processing
Plan Owncast upload headroom and viewer delivery
Owncast’s official guide recommends roughly 1.5 times the stream bitrate as upload headroom. Its example calculates 7.5 Mbps upload for a 5,000 kbps stream. These are an attributed rule of thumb and illustrative calculation from undated Owncast documentation accessed in 2026, not universal minimums or a promise of performance. Your actual needs depend on the stream and configuration. Owncast performance guidance
For Owncast, the host also needs sufficient outbound throughput for concurrent viewers unless video delivery is offloaded to object storage. The encoder’s upload capacity and the server’s ability to serve viewers are separate constraints; account for both when sizing a public stream.

Decide whether Owncast should transcode or pass through
Additional transcoded output qualities consume server resources. Owncast advises starting with one output, testing it, then adding variants only if the machine can handle them. Passthrough can save CPU, but sends the source unchanged; that can reduce compatibility on some playback devices or increase latency. Owncast video guidance
Restreamer still depends on the source and host
Restreamer’s direct YouTube publication workflow does not remove the need to keep its source, container, host and network functioning. Its quick start notes that public-facing functionality may require port forwarding. Restreamer quick start

Set up the YouTube publishing path
Restreamer to YouTube
- Prepare the YouTube channel. Live streaming must be enabled for the channel. For an encoder workflow, YouTube provides a Live server URL and stream key; follow the current YouTube Live control-room instructions for the channel. YouTube Help: live streaming with an encoder
- Run Restreamer and configure a source. Follow the current Restreamer quick start for container setup and source configuration. Confirm the source plays as expected before publishing.
- Configure the Publication Service. Select the YouTube Publication Service and enter a valid YouTube streaming ID as described in Restreamer’s YouTube guide.
- Save and start publishing. Check YouTube’s live view to confirm the feed arrives, then monitor the source and host rather than assuming that a successful start guarantees continuous operation.
- End a planned broadcast cleanly. Restreamer’s YouTube guide advises ending the stream on YouTube first after an event; interrupting Restreamer mid-stream may prevent YouTube from saving the live stream in its DVR archive. Follow the current guide and UI for the exact shutdown sequence.
Owncast as the stream destination
- Install Owncast on a supported host. Use the current installation and quick-start documentation; the guide’s available downloads include common Linux architectures and ARM builds, but that does not guarantee compatibility with every device.
- Make the web interface and RTMP ingest reachable. Configure the required ports for the intended audience and encoder access. Owncast’s guide uses the server’s
/live/endpoint for incoming RTMP broadcasts. - Configure the encoder to send RTMP. Owncast says it is generally compatible with broadcasting software using RTMP to a remote server, but not every setup has been tested. Validate the encoder and server combination before relying on it continuously.
- Run Owncast under supervision. Configure a background process or system service so it can keep running independently of an interactive login, and test recovery after a restart.
- Add YouTube only through a separately configured path. The reviewed Owncast guide does not establish native YouTube forwarding. If YouTube is required as an additional destination, choose and test a separate relay or publishing workflow; do not assume Owncast itself sends the stream there.
Copyright, live access and channel policy
Before scheduling a continuous broadcast, make sure the channel can go live and that you have the rights needed for every video, audio track and other material in the loop. YouTube’s live workflow requires live streaming to be enabled; use the current YouTube encoder help and applicable YouTube policies to check account eligibility and content requirements. A technically continuous feed does not establish that its content is authorized or that it complies with platform rules.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Restreamer does not publish to YouTube | Publication Service setup or YouTube streaming ID | Confirm the ID is valid, recheck the current Publication Service setup, and verify that the channel’s live streaming is enabled. Restreamer guide; YouTube Help |
| Owncast does not receive the encoder feed | RTMP endpoint, network reachability or encoder compatibility | Check that the server and ingest port are reachable, confirm the encoder is targeting the Owncast /live/ endpoint, and test the combination; RTMP compatibility is broad but not universal. Owncast quick start |
| The service stops after closing a terminal or logging out | Process was not configured for persistent operation | Run Owncast as a background process or system service as its installation guide describes; for Restreamer, verify the Docker container is running and configured to start as required by your host. Owncast guide; Restreamer quick start |
| Viewers see buffering or the stream drops under load | Upload headroom, host outbound throughput, or transcoding load | For Owncast, compare available upload against its roughly 1.5× bitrate planning rule, then assess concurrent viewer delivery and transcoding resources. Treat the guide’s 7.5 Mbps example for 5,000 kbps as illustrative, not a universal threshold. Owncast performance guidance |
| Some playback devices cannot play a passthrough stream | Source compatibility | Passthrough preserves the source and may limit playback compatibility; test target devices or consider transcoded output only if the server can support the added resource use. Owncast video guidance |
