At its January 2024 launch price of $599, the GeForce RTX 4070 Super was one of Nvidia’s strongest 40-series values. It delivered roughly 15% more gaming performance than the RTX 4070, with excellent ray tracing, DLSS, efficiency, and a relatively compact design for the same official price. In 2026, however, that verdict is no longer automatic: the card’s 12GB of VRAM and newer RTX 5070- and Radeon RX 9070-class alternatives make its value depend on the actual price and your priorities.
RTX 4070 Super: the short version
- Best for: high-refresh 1440p gaming, ray tracing, DLSS, streaming, CUDA applications, and efficient builds.
- Still good at: 1440p with demanding settings and selective 4K gaming.
- Main weakness: 12GB of VRAM and a 192-bit memory bus limit its long-term 4K headroom.
- Launch verdict: an unusually good $599 upgrade over the RTX 4070.
- 2026 verdict: buy it only when discounted enough against newer cards, or when Nvidia’s software and creator ecosystem matter to you.
The RTX 4070 Super became available on January 17, 2024. Nvidia kept the RTX 4070’s $599 launch price while increasing the core count, cache, and power limit. That made the Super model the version many buyers should have chosen from the start.
Ars Technica’s independent launch review measured it at approximately 15% faster than the regular RTX 4070 in most games, with gains ranging from roughly 8–10% in some tests to about 22% in a particularly favorable 4K ray-tracing result.
What changed versus the RTX 4070?
| Specification | RTX 4070 | RTX 4070 Super | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| CUDA cores | 5,888 | 7,168 | About 21.7% more shader resources |
| Boost clock | 2.475GHz | 2.475GHz | No listed boost-clock increase |
| Memory | 12GB GDDR6/GDDR6X | 12GB GDDR6X | Same capacity; reference Super uses faster memory |
| Memory bus | 192-bit | 192-bit | No improvement in interface width |
| L2 cache | 36MB | 48MB | Can reduce some memory traffic |
| Total graphics power | 200W | 220W | Higher performance ceiling |
| Recommended system power | 650W | 650W | Same Nvidia recommendation |
| Launch price | $599 | $599 | The Super replaced the original value proposition |
Nvidia described the core increase as roughly 20%; the detailed specifications show 7,168 versus 5,888, or approximately 21.7%. That does not translate directly into a 21.7% gaming improvement because performance also depends on memory bandwidth, game engines, resolution, and other bottlenecks.

The most important omission is what did not change. The RTX 4070 Super still has 12GB of memory on a 192-bit bus. Its 48MB of L2 cache helps, but it does not turn the card into a wide-bus, high-capacity 4K GPU.
Nvidia’s specifications and compatibility guide lists the card’s 7,168 CUDA cores, 12GB of GDDR6X memory, 192-bit interface, approximately 2.48GHz boost clock, 220W total graphics power, and 650W recommended system power.
Gaming performance: a strong 1440p card
The RTX 4070 Super’s natural target is 1440p. In Ars Technica’s launch testing, it generally performed around the level of the RTX 3080 Ti at that resolution. The result was not identical in every game, but it put the Super in a notably higher performance class than the regular RTX 4070.
1440p rasterized gaming
In conventional, non-ray-traced games, the RTX 4070 Super was competitive rather than dominant. AMD’s Radeon RX 7800 XT often matched or exceeded it in rasterized performance, making the Radeon attractive to buyers who cared primarily about traditional rendering and memory capacity.
1440p ray tracing
Ray tracing was a clearer Nvidia win. In heavier ray-traced workloads, including tests involving Cyberpunk 2077 and Returnal, the RTX 4070 Super held a substantial advantage over the RX 7800 XT. That advantage is especially useful at 1440p, where the card can combine ray tracing with DLSS without starting from an excessively low base frame rate.
4K gaming
The card can deliver good 4K results, often around 60 frames per second depending on the game, settings, and use of upscaling. It is better described as an entry-level or selectively configured 4K GPU than as a comfortable native-4K maximum-settings solution.
The RTX 3080 Ti sometimes pulled further ahead at 4K because its 384-bit memory bus was better suited to high-resolution workloads. The Super’s 12GB framebuffer can also become a constraint with ultra textures, ray tracing, mods, and newer games. That does not make the card unusable at 4K; it means owners may need to reduce texture quality, ray-tracing settings, or render resolution sooner than someone with a 16GB card.
The Ars results came from a launch-period test system using a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6000, Windows 11 22H2, and pre-release Nvidia and AMD drivers. They are useful evidence for the original comparison, but not a timeless measurement of every current driver and game.

DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. It can improve performance while maintaining image quality that is often better than simply lowering a game’s output resolution.

Frame Generation works differently: it inserts AI-generated frames between conventionally rendered frames. This can make motion appear smoother in supported games, and the RTX 4070 Super is a stronger candidate for the feature than weaker GPUs because it can usually establish a reasonable base frame rate at 1440p.
Frame Generation is not equivalent to rendering every frame conventionally. It can introduce visual artifacts and does not remove the latency characteristics of the underlying rendered frame rate. It is best used when the base frame rate is already healthy, not as a way to disguise an otherwise inadequate result.
In demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077, it can make a major perceived-smoothness difference. For a fair value comparison, though, native or conventionally rendered performance should be considered first, with DLSS and Frame Generation treated as separate feature-assisted results. Nvidia’s DLSS overview explains the supported technologies.
RTX 4070 Super versus Radeon RX 7800 XT
| Choose the RTX 4070 Super if you prioritize… | Choose the RX 7800 XT if you prioritize… |
|---|---|
| Ray tracing | Traditional rasterized performance |
| DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation | 16GB of VRAM |
| CUDA and Nvidia creator software | A wider memory bus |
| NVENC encoding and Nvidia’s ecosystem | A lower launch-era price |
| Lower gaming power draw | Maximum memory headroom for the money |
The RX 7800 XT launched at approximately $499, around $100 less than the RTX 4070 Super. Ars Technica found AMD’s card often matched or beat the Super in rasterized games, while the Nvidia card was clearly stronger in demanding ray tracing. The RX 7800 XT also used roughly 30W more in comparable gaming tests.
Neither card is universally better. A raster-focused 1440p player may get more value from the Radeon’s 16GB of VRAM. Someone who plays ray-traced games, uses DLSS, streams, or relies on CUDA may reasonably prefer the Nvidia card even when the raw raster frame rate is similar.
Does 12GB of VRAM matter?
For 1440p gaming, 12GB is generally sufficient today, especially when settings are chosen sensibly. It is not a reason to reject the RTX 4070 Super outright.
It is, however, a meaningful limitation for a long ownership period. High-resolution textures, ray tracing, mods, 4K output, and future games can increase memory use. When VRAM becomes the bottleneck, lowering the rendering resolution may not solve every problem because texture data and other assets still need to fit in memory.

The sensible conclusion is that 12GB suits 1440p better than high-end 4K. Buyers who want more long-term memory headroom should look closely at 16GB alternatives, even if their average launch-day frame rate is similar.
Power, connectors, and case fit
Nvidia recommends a 650W system power supply. The Founders Edition can use the supplied adapter with two PCIe 8-pin connectors, or a compatible 300W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable directly.

The Founders Edition is approximately 244mm long, 112mm high, and two slots thick. Nvidia advises leaving additional clearance for the power cable. Partner cards can be substantially different, with larger coolers, three-slot designs, factory overclocks, different connectors, and different warranties.
Check the exact model number before buying. Confirm the card’s length and height against the case, reserve room for the power connector, and verify that the power supply is reputable and has the required cables. A 650W recommendation does not mean every old 650W unit is an equally good choice.
Then versus now: is it still good value in 2026?
The original $599 verdict remains correct for the market in which the card launched. The Super gave buyers significantly more performance than the RTX 4070 for no increase in official price, and it combined that performance with strong efficiency and Nvidia’s software advantages.
That historical verdict should not be turned into an automatic 2026 recommendation. Nvidia’s RTX 5070 launched at $549 with 12GB of GDDR7, while AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT launched at $599 and offers a newer-generation alternative with 16GB-class memory. Availability and street prices are more complicated than those launch prices.
For a U.S. market snapshot from August 2026, a price watch listed the RTX 5070 at approximately $755 and the RX 9070 XT at approximately $720. Nvidia’s marketplace showed the RTX 5070’s $549 listing but marked it out of stock when checked. A Zotac RTX 4070 Super listing showed $649.99 and was also out of stock. These figures are observations, not guaranteed prices, and can change quickly.
Use current street price rather than MSRP as the deciding factor. If an RTX 4070 Super is substantially cheaper than newer comparable cards, it can still be an excellent purchase. If it costs as much as or more than a newer RTX 5070-class or RX 9070-class card, its older architecture and 12GB capacity make the comparison much less favorable.

Who should buy the RTX 4070 Super?
Buy it when:
- You primarily play at 1440p and want high refresh rates.
- Ray tracing and DLSS are important to you.
- You use CUDA-dependent applications, Nvidia creator tools, or NVENC encoding.
- You want strong performance without the power draw of larger high-end cards.
- You need a relatively compact card and have verified the exact model’s dimensions.
- You find a new, open-box, or used card meaningfully below newer alternatives.
Prefer a Radeon card when:
- You mostly play rasterized games.
- You want 16GB of VRAM for longer-term headroom.
- Ray tracing and DLSS are secondary.
- The Radeon alternative is substantially cheaper.
- Your case and power supply can accommodate a higher-draw card.
Prefer a newer Nvidia card when:
- Its actual price is close to the RTX 4070 Super’s price.
- You are building a new system and want a newer generation.
- You value newer-generation features and a longer expected support horizon.
- The performance improvement justifies the additional cost.
Used-buying checklist
A used RTX 4070 Super can make sense, but evaluate the individual listing rather than assuming every card has had the same history. Check the remaining warranty, seller reputation, return policy, original adapter, physical damage, fan noise, coil whine, and evidence of heavy use. Ask for a working benchmark or game test when possible, and make sure the card is not an incompatible oversized partner model for your case.
Verdict
The RTX 4070 Super was genuinely one of Nvidia’s best values at $599 in January 2024. It fixed the regular RTX 4070’s weak value proposition, delivered roughly 15% more performance in the launch review, and offered an unusually strong combination of 1440p performance, ray tracing, DLSS, efficiency, and Nvidia software support.
In 2026, it is a conditional recommendation rather than an automatic one. Buy it at a clear discount, or choose it when ray tracing, DLSS, CUDA, NVENC, efficiency, or a compact design matter more than maximum VRAM and newer-generation performance. Do not pay a premium for an old MSRP simply because the original review called it a great value.
